Match Reaction 30th October 2004
Queens slumped to their third defeat in a row at Broadwood this afternoon and now go three games without finding the net. It was another disappointing result and we rarely threatened a well organised Clyde side. Said manager Iain Scott after the match, "I felt it wasn't too bad a performance for an away game as Clyde are joint top and always hard to beat at Broadwood. But we made far too many mistakes and we're being sorely punished for them. We huffed and we puffed but again we couldn't score a goal. It was a bad defensive error which gifted them the early opener but we should have equalised when David McNiven was clean through but failed to score. David's usually a lethal finisher from that range and if that chance had gone in it could have been so different. The penalty decision was debatable but once Ian Harty scored from the spot it left us with a 'mountain to climb'".

Brian Reid had to leave the field midway through the second half with a thigh injury but we're glad to report it doesn't look serious.

Before the match Derek Lyle admitted he was pleased to be back at Palmerston, said the Tan man, "Obviously I was disappointed it didn't work out for me at Dunfermline but during my six months at East End Park I probably learned more there than I did in the previous five years as I was training with experienced players like Barry Nicholson and Craig Brewster. However I was delighted when Queen of the South approached me. St Johnstone and St Mirren were also interested but I know most of the lads, the Chairman and the management team at Palmerston and I enjoyed my previous spell there. So really Queens were the only club for me".

Flu bug in the camp 28th October 2004
Queens have been hit by a flu bug as they prepare for a trip to meet second top Clyde at Broadwood on Saturday. Said manager Iain Scott, "It's quite worrying, four or five of the players, also Warren and myself have been suffering and it's most unpleasant. To make matters worse it doesn't appear to be a 24 hour thing. Eric Paton had to leave the pitch on Saturday because of it and he's still feeling the effects. We've had injuries, sickness, diarrhea and now a flu epidemic this season--I just wish we could get a three or four week spell clear of trouble.

"However, providing sickness allows, we'll have new faces in from the start on Saturday. I was not happy with the performance at Ross County--we were flat and lethargic which just isn't good enough. Paul Burns is fit again and should play, but it's 'wait and see' with our flu victims. David Craig is still out. Although his hamstring problem has cleared up he has a trapped nerve in his leg as a result of the injury and is to receive a course of acupuncture.

"It's also been a nightmare training this week. It was too wet to use Palmerston so we had to restrict it to indoor work at the gym, but on Wednesday we managed to get some of the lads through to train during the day.

"Saturday's game will be another tough one, but as I've said before, 'they're all hard in this league'. Clyde are sitting second top with an impressive home record and they are very tight in defence. Billy Reid and his coaches have done a fantastic job and the credit is all theirs. In the close season the club was in serious financial trouble but have now 'weathered the storm' and Billy managed to hold on to players like Ian Harty, which was a big boost for him. It's never easy at Broadwood but I'll be looking for a much livelier performance than we gave at Dingwall.

"On the player front, we've been talking to two strikers over the past few weeks. I don't think the lad from the Conference will be joining us however. Since we first approached him other clubs have shown an interest and the 'goalposts have now moved' in financial terms".

Tan man returns 28th October 2004
Derek Lyle re-signed for Queens this afternoon. Said Scotty, "I'm delighted Derek is back, we never wanted to lose him in the first place but it was unfair to deny him the opportunity of Premier League football. There's still some 'red tape' to sort out but he's signed until the end of the season. Derek's now 23 but he'll hopefully supply the pace upfront we've been lacking in recent games and he'll go straight into the squad for the Clyde match.

Match reaction 23rd October 2004
A 1-0 defeat by Ross County at Dingwall this afternoon saw Queens surrender their proud 100% away league record. It also saw County grab their first home win of the season but amazingly Queens still retain fourth spot in the table with the other four matches in our division all ending in draws and it proves once again what a tight league we are playing in.

However Ross County are now level with Queens on both points and goal difference and we are holding on literally, 'by the skin of our teeth' and staying ahead only by virtue of scoring a goal more. Defensively we are fine having conceded only six goals in our last seven games and only Falkirk have managed to put more than one goal past us in the league, but it's up front where we are struggling.

Iain Scott was not a happy man after the match. Raged Scotty, "It was a very poor performance, it's just not good enough - too many players seem to be competing in a 'comfort zone'. We can't rely on other teams dropping points, we've got to go out there and win games. We're just not making it happen! It was all very lethargic out there today, it's easy to blame the long journey north but we had an overnight stop over so that's not an excuse.

"They were a much better side than us in the first half yet we had the best chance just before the interval but Brian McLaughlin put it just wide of the post. At half time we thought we'd weathered the storm' but they came out and hit us with a goal in practically the first attack. It was a very bad time to lose a goal. Players were caught out of position and it should have been avoided. I thought we'd equalised in the dying minutes but their 'keeper pulled off a great save from Emilio.

"But I feel it's time for change. Willie Gibson and Stephen Payne both did well when they came on - Willie in particular is showing a lot of potential and I think it just might be 'his season'".

Dingwall bound 21st October 2004
Any soccer pundit studying statistics would make Queens a 'banker' to beat Ross County at Dingwall on Saturday. After all, we are the only side with a 100% league record away from home, having won four out of four, while Ross County have managed only a single point from their five home matches to date. However, anyone who really knows the game will be quick to point out that facts and figures mean very little in football and it's all down to how the teams perform on the day.

Last season we had a good record at Victoria Park winning two of our three encounters up there but this season Ross County did beat us 1-0 in our first home fixture with ex-Queens' favourite Alex Burke netting the only goal. The official party will leave on Friday and will be stopping off at Inverness overnight before proceeding to Dingwall on Saturday and this will act as an unofficial 'bonding' session for the squad.

It's a long haul, especially for the players from South of the Border, but perhaps it's better to get it over with before winter really sets in for, after that, our next visit up there is towards the end of April when the worst of the weather will hopefully be past.

Paul Burns and David Craig will still be missing from the Queens' squad and so too will be Eric Paton who has a groin strain. Jim Thomson's knee has flared up following his recent 'keyhole' surgery while David McNiven is still getting injections for a toe injury but both are keen to play so it's hopeful they will. Steve Bowey had to skip training earlier in the week but he's expected to make it too.

Match Reaction 16th October 2004
In a very closely contested match Queens lost by the only goal of the game to St Johnstone much to the disappointment of the home crowd. Afterwards manager Iain Scott said, "Naturally I was disappointed at the result but there was little to choose between the two sides. We were on a good run of five games unbeaten but whether the fortnight's break unsettled us we'll never know.

We didn't play particularly well in the first half but we still had our chances, however after the interval it was a lot better and there was more movement there. Never the less we didn't really get going until they scored. It was a well hit shot but the players were adamant that JT was fouled beforehand. After that we created some good chances but the breaks just didn't go our way today".

John Connolly was a happier man after taking maximum points on his first visit back to Palmerston since his departure. Admitted the Saints boss, "It was a good open game with lots of chances for both teams but we got the break and the goal and I'm delighted to go back up the road tonight with three points. From personal experience I knew it wouldn't be easy today for I'm well aware of the capability of the Queens players - after all I signed most of them. They put us under a bit of pressure in the latter stages but we held out".

Saints at Palmerston 14th October 2004
Queens meet St Johnstone at Palmerston on Saturday, the third clash between the two clubs this season. Honours are even at the moment, Queens winning 3-1 in the opening league fixture at McDermid Park with Saints getting revenge a couple of weeks later, beating us 3-0 in the Bell's Challenge Cup, again at Perth.

Saturday will see John Connolly making his first return visit to Palmerston since he left to join Saints towards the end of last season, so let's hope he remembers to go to the right dressing-room.

It will be a late decision on the availability of several Queens' players. Neither Brian Reid nor David Bagan trained on Wednesday night--'Reidy' had a bout of flu earlier in the week while David Bagan had a knee injury. So it's 50-50 for those two. Jim Thomson has made a speedy recovery following 'keyhole-surgery' for a knee problem but it's hopeful he might make it, however young Paul Burns is out after sustaining a cracked rib against St Johnstone in the last home game. Also missing is David Craig still suffering with a lingering hamstring injury, but back in the squad, after being sidelined for several weeks, will be Willie Gibson.

Raring to go. 10th October 2004
On Friday Chairman Davie Rae phoned Jim Thomson to enquire 'how he was after his keyhole surgery' the previous day. And the reply "I'm feeling fine Mr Chairman, I'll be back training on Monday night for I'm desperate to play against St Johnstone."

That's dedication for you, but as we all know the final decision will rest with the manager.

Youth team wins through 9th October 2004
Queens' Under-19 side won through to the third round of the Scottish Youth Cup with a hard fought 2-1 victory at Gretna last night. In a very competitive match Queens took the lead in the 15th minute when Chris Rudd deflected a shot into the net. Gretna came more into the game in the second half and snatched a deserved equaliser on the hour mark. However, back came Queens and, following a 'set-piece', Stuart Hill headed home what proved to be the winner in the 70th minute.

Having beaten Dalbeattie Star in round one and now Gretna in the second round, Queens go into the draw for round three when the Premier League sides come into the competition. The draw is seeded so we have the chance of meeting one of the 'big guns.

The life of Brian 7th October 2004

Brian Reid towered fully six inches above me as he ambled into the dressing room for 'Player Chat' and it was hard to credit that this 'Gentle Giant' battled through European ties and Cup Finals in days gone by. A 'Buddie', born in Paisley, Brian said he was more or less playing football as soon as he could walk. He rose through the ranks of Boys' Club sides before signing for Morton at the age of 17. He well remembers holding Motherwell to a draw in the Scottish Cup but Morton lost the replay (after a penalty shoot-out) and the Fir Park side went on to win the cup that season. But it certainly put the young Brian Reid in the spotlight and several big clubs started showing an interest in the 20-year-old.

He enjoyed those early days at Cappilow with team-mates like Derek McInnes and Alan Mahood but it was a 'dream come true' when in 1991 he was signed by mighty Glasgow Rangers. "I remember it well" he recalls. "The late great Brian Clough had made a bid to take me to Nottingham Forest but then I heard that Graeme Souness was interested in signing me for Rangers. Morton had always said that 'the final decision was mine' so although Forest's offer was £50,000 more, there was only one place I was going to end up. I was to be Souness' last signing before he left for Liverpool, so Walter Smith was to be my 'gaffer' after that.
"Walking through the main door at Ibrox and up the famous marble stairway was one of the best moments of my life but only two months later came one of my worst. I was playing against St Mirren in a testimonial match for Campbell Money when I got caught by a late tackle. At the time I thought my leg was broken and on hindsight I wish it had been. It turned out to be a dreaded cruciate injury which saw me sidelined for nine months.

"I only managed about 25 first team appearances in my four years with Rangers but always regretted never playing in an 'Old Firm' game. However, it was extremely difficult to break into the big team at that time with players like 'Gazza', Brian Laudrup, Ally McCoist, Mark Hately and, of course, Andy Goram around. In fact, almost everyone at Ibrox in those days was an internationalist. 'Gazza' was a real joker and you had to watch out for his pranks all the time. After training one day I'd just run a nice warm soapy bath for myself when 'Gazza' pushed me aside and jumped in before me. After five minutes he came out and said 'It's all yours now big man' but knowing his reputation I didn't trust him and politely turned down the offer. It was just as well for, as the bubbles cleared, three very unsavoury floating obects were to be seen. But that's 'Gazza' for you.

"I did get to play in a European Cup qualifier for Rangers. It was at home against Famagusta from Cyprus, we won 1-0 and then went through 2-1 on aggregate. So I enjoyed that experience! I was also capped for Scotland Under-21s in a competition in France and named as 'Defender of the Tournament' which was a great honour.

"After four enjoyable years at Ibrox I moved back to Morton for 18 months and during that spell we were just pipped for promotion. Then it was on to Burnley and Dunfermline before signing for Blackpool in August 2000. I was two and a half years 'beside the seaside' and my highlight at Bloomfield Road was beating Leyton Orient 4-2 in the final of the Auto Windscreen Shield, and I scored one of them. It was played at the National Stadium in Cardiff and that was some experience.

"Following that I returned to Scotland to join Falkirk but it was six months I'd rather forget. They knew I was carrying an injury at the time and wasn't fully fit but they didn't take that into account and 'freed' me at the end of the season without giving me a chance to prove myself. So I was happy when John Connolly came along signed me for Queens and happier still that we beat Falkirk four times last season without conceding a goal.

"John was a good manager and a very successful one. I always got on well with him and there's nothing bad I can say about John. But I'm also enjoying working with 'Scotty' and 'Wasa'. They're a great pair and nothing has really changed much since they took over as they were always in charge of all the training. I'm now First Team coach and I work a lot with the Under-19s and it's a satisfying job just seeing these young players improving.

"We've a great bunch of lads at Palmerston at present and there's a tremendous atmosphere in the dressing-room. They're no 'prima donnas' and I think that's the secret of our success. But we do have some real characters such as Jim Thomson and Davy Bagan, however some of the young players' dress sense leaves a lot to be desired. Take Stephen Payne for example, he's like something from the 'Starsky and Hutch' era" he laughed.

But, confessed Brian "I only wish I could get a few more goals. I've only scored once since coming to Palmerston and at my previous clubs I usually averaged about three a year. I put it all down to a poor quality of cross balls" he said with a big smile.

What do you like most about Queen of the South? we asked. Said 'Reidy' "They're a real family club and everyone works for each other. The supporters are fantastic, I've met quite a few of them and told them the noise they make, especially away from home, is unbelieveable and all the players appreciate it".

Brian is now 34 and a happily married man. He and his wife Christine now live in Glasgow and have two of a family, Kyle (6) and Christina (3). He concludes "Kyle was a match-day mascot against Clyde a few weeks ago and it brought a lump in my throat when I saw him run on to the park with all his gear on that afternoon". A 'Gentle Giant' indeed.

Bill Goldie
Top player may sign for Queens 6th October 2004
Manager, Iain Scott, admitted today that Queens are hopeful of signing a new player next week. Said 'Scotty' "He's English, he's a very experienced midfielder and has played at the top level. He's keen to join us and we're keen to get him. He's coming on Monday to see the set-up and he's asked to meet the rest of the players. So it's looking good. We're also interested in a striker from down south but that's on hold at the moment. He's had a 'fall-out' with his club and as a result is not playing at present so obviously we want to assess him fully before making any move".

The manager says he's well pleased to be in fourth place in the table at the quarter-way point in the season. He added "At this stage last season we had 19 points and were in top place but after a poorish start I'm delighted to be on the 16 point mark and collecting 13 points from our last 5 games is magnificent.

"Some say that the week's break has come at the wrong time for us because we're doing so well. But I don't agree! It allows us to get those who are recovering from injury and those who have been absent for other reasons the chance to do some really hard training which we're frightened to risk if we have a match on the Saturday".

On the subject of the injured 'Scotty' confessed. "We're gradually getting players back and it's getting better. Paul Burns is not nearly as bad as was first thought. On Saturday we were sure he'd a couple of broken ribs but, following a fuller examination, there's only one cracked but there's a lot of bruising. He's still very sore but he's young and a very quick healer so he could even make it for the St Johnstone game with a bit of luck. Jim Thomson was due to go into hospital for 'key-hole' surgery on his knee on Monday. But, unfortunately, it was delayed and he will now go through the operation tomorrow (Thursday). So it's 'touch and go' whether he'll make it for next Saturday. Willie Gibson is now back in full training and doing well, Billy McDonald however is still restricted to 'straight running' at the moment while David Craig is set to resume training on Monday, but with a 'hamstring' you can't rush it".

Talking about the new signings this season he said "David McNiven is a born goal-scorer. I always said he was 'a 20 goal a season man' and with 7 already I think that speaks for itself. He knows himself that he's still not reached the fitness level required at the club but he's working really hard at it--especially on the weight side. Apart from scoring he also holds the ball up well which allows others to get into position. As for Brian McLaughlin, he's discovered a new lease of life in recent weeks and was one of the best players on the park against St Mirren. He says he's 'never been happier and delighted to be back at Palmerston again'. We hope to get him fixed up with a job in Dumfries soon, which will allow him to train a lot more". Tommy English he describes as "Very versatile. A quality player and a true footballer. He has a great left peg and only uses his right leg to stand on--but so did Maradonna. Tommy's a superb crosser of the ball which was so obvious in Saturday's match, and like Eric Paton is really a midfielder but both seem to perform better at full-back. Chris Armstrong is just 19 and has not been getting a regular game lately. We know he's good in the air and a big strong lad who should be an asset on the heavier pitches in winter. However, he still needs to work on his fitness and finishing.

"Lee George is another young player with a lot to learn. But he has a lot of pace and can leave most of the others behind at training. He's signed on a 'month-to month' basis at the moment. David Craig is an experienced defender and has been brought in to give us more height at the back. He has only managed two games so far but looked good. Chris Scott has unfortunately fallen behind a bit and with others coming back from injury is not an automatic selection at present while Billy MacDonald has a while to go yet before he regains his fitness level. But Billy's very experienced and excellent with the young lads--a genuine professional".

Concluded the manager "When everyone is fit the players know that only 11 can take the field and 5 be on the bench. We've sat them all down and explained the situation. We'll take one match at a time and select what we think is the best line-up. It may well be that a player could be 'Man of the Match' one week but relegated to the bench the following week depending on the opposition. They all know the score and accept it".

Match Reaction 2nd October 2004
Iain Scott was a very happy man after notching up the first home win of the season against the league leaders. Said Scotty, "I'm thrilled for the club, the players and for the fans. I asked our supporters to give us backing this afternoon and they certainly did that. I've always said when we got all our players fit we can beat anyone in the league and we proved that today. The lads were really fired up for the kick off and the two early goals gave us a perfect start. As we expected St Mirren came back at us in the second half with a vengeance. The players said afterwards it was like the siege of the Alamo but we defended well.

"When you're two up you just can't go chasing the game but we were professional, held our shape and deserved our victory.

"We've had some bad luck this season but we had some good luck today. But I must admit that second half seemed to go on for an eternity".

In contrast Gus McPherson was bitterly disappointed. Said the St Mirren manager, "You can't give any club in this league a two goal start and expect to win - especially a team like Queen of the South at Palmerston. We got some more reaction from the players in the second half but it was all too little, too late. I was disappointed to lose our unbeaten record but I thought we had a stonewall penalty turned down in the second half".

Big Jim Thomson, playing with a knee injury summed it all up in two sentences, "The two early goals gave us a brilliant start and the boys took their chances well. We hung in there in the second half and rode our luck a bit but we deserved the three points". Jim will go into hospital on Monday for a minor operation on that injured knee but with no match next week he expects to be fit for the St Johnstone game.

*Sponsors man of the match Paul Burns suffered two broken ribs and was taken to hospital after the match. Young Paul could be out for six to eight weeks.

'Let's hear it from the fans' says 'Scotty' 29th September 2004
Manager Iain Scott says Saturday's game against St Mirren will be a real tester and Queens will need all the help they can from the fans. "They're league leaders and still unbeaten in the league this season" he said. "They have conceded only four goals in eight matches and are very strong and physical in defence. Gus McPherson has done a great job at Love Street since he took over as manager 10 months ago and has got his players really battling for each other. They're top of the table on merit, for league placings don't lie, and have their sights firmly set on the Premier League. They're a class side with plenty of spirit and Gus has brought in a lot of excellent players. We'll have to watch an ex-Queens' man, John O'Neill, very carefully. We all know he's a deadly finisher and loves to score against his old team.

"But as I've said dozens of times before, 'With a full squad we fear no-one'. We're gradually getting bodies back again, and I'm delighted at that. Jim Thomson has a slight ankle injury but he'll probably play with it strapped, but I doubt if David Craig will make it for Saturday. His hamstring injury is a bit more serious than we first thought an we don't want to take any unnecessary risks. Willie Gibson and Billy McDonald are both back in training and could be available in a couple of weeks time.

"Last week I mentioned we had identified two players, a midfielder and a striker, who we are interested in. I can't name them for obvious reasons but I can tell you they're both from South of the Border. We're meeting one of them a week on Monday and I'd like to think we could reach agreement.

"But back to Saturday's game and I hear that St Mirren could bring around 1000 fans with them. So I hope the Queens' fans will give us all the vocal support they can. Don't let the 'Buddies' outshout you".

Bill Goldie
"It won't be easy" says Gus 28th September 2004
St Mirren manager, Gus McPherson reckons Saturday's match could go either way. "There's a very fine line between winning and losing in our league and I think recent results have more than proved that" he stressed. "The results highlight just what a tough division this is with every club capable of beating each other. In our last two games we've met two of the bottom teams, Raith Rovers and Airdrie. At Kirkcaldy we were a bit lucky to come back with three points for they missed several very good chances and on Saturday at home to Airdrie we were stunned with a late equaliser in the dying seconds. Queen of the South may be a part-time side but in name only. Every club, and I mean EVERY club in the First Division has total respect for them. John Connolly brought together a good squad but, in my opinion, 'Scotty' and Warren have actually strengthened that squad bringing in players like the lad, McNiven, who's been knocking in the goals, and experienced campaigners such as Brian McLaughin and David Craig. Players who they can trust to put in a 100% shift.

"If I can recall honours were even between us last season, both of us winning two apiece. I had my first game in charge as caretaker manager when we last visited Palmerston back in November. We won 2-1 that day but I know from experience it's a difficult place to win. Since Queens were promoted two years ago they have been a revelation and have really excelled themselves. For the past two seasons they've finished in the top half of the league and this season they're right up there in fourth spot having won three of their last four games. Nowadays, however, it can sometimes be an advantage playing away from home for the expectancy is not so great as it is in front of your own fans. But, nevertheless, it's going to be an extremely difficult one for us on Saturday and if we head back up the M74 with three points we'll certainly have earned them".

Gus predicts Saints will bring over 1000 fans for the match. "We had almost 1400 at Kirkcaldy and if the weather remains good I see no reason why we can't bring a similar number to Dumfries" he concluded.
