Match Reaction 31st August 2004
Queens crashed out of the Bell's Challenge Cup tonight as St.Johnstone avenged the 3-1 defeat in the league just over a couple of weeks ago. Two goals in the space of a minute on the half-hour mark ended Queens' hopes and once again they failed to find the net.

Said a disappointed Iain Scott after the game, "That display was not acceptable and we can't blame our injuries for that performance, we were lacking in confidence, the 'generals' were missing from the team and some players were 'hiding' thankfully we have no more injuries which is the only bonus. We thought we might have strengthened our squad today but we had two offers for a player turned down".

However John Connolly was a much happier man and said, "Queens turned us over in the league a week or two ago but we turned the tables on them tonight. That's two wins in a row now for us and two clean sheets so as far as I'm concerned that's brilliant. Considering we have five players missing I'm well satisfied".

Man of the Match 30th August 2004
Tommy English now has a first place to add to his second and third places in the internet fan's 'Man of the Match' voting, the left sided defender impressing everyone with his forward runs and efforts on goal. Second place went to 'keeper Colin Scott who again pulled off some excellent saves on Saturday and third to Paul Burns for an outstanding display in an unfamiliar position.

The player of the season league table has been updated and can be found via the Man of the Match link.

Team News 30th August 2004
Iain Scott hopes to have two new players signed before tomorrow night's Challenge Cup tie against St Johnstone at Perth. Said Scotty "I'm after a centre-half and a striker before the 'windows' deadline tomorrow night but it's getting them that's the big problem. We've had major injury problems to major players and it's been 'killing' us. Eric Paton, Emilio Jaconelli and Willie Gibson are all good players who would normally be in the First Team but they're all injured. Brian Reid will also miss the cup game, he shouldn't have played on Saturday and had he been fully fit I don't think Clyde would have scored that goal. But we're down to the 'bare bones' and had to play him.

"We'll have Gary Wood back from suspension and Paul Hilland will hopefully be available. I'm also hoping David McNiven will play although he's still suffering from injuries to both his knees. But again we'll probably have to have Under-19 players on the bench for cover".

Naturally he's looking for a win but stresses that the league is still his main priority. He added "Our away form has been good this season and we've already beaten St Johnstone up there this season. John has had a shaky start at Perth but he got a win on Saturday and once he gets all his new players settled in, I'm sure his team will come good. But we have to remember we're playing St Johnstone football club not John Connolly".

Nevertheless let's hope that the Queens' players will be motivated again playing against their old boss and get a result which will see us through to round 3.

Said Saints' boss, John Connolly "We got our first league win 'under our belts' on Saturday and we're all feeling a bit happier. I'm now looking to build on that and move up the table. What people forget is, although we lost our last three games they were all by a single goal and the breaks weren't going for us so I'm hoping the win will act as a confidence builder.

"We had seven first-team regulars missing on Saturday which made the result even more pleasing and we'll still have four of them out for tomorrow's match against Queens. I'm looking forward to the game and I know Queens will prove stern opposition. You beat us 3-1 in the league a few weeks ago but this is a cup-tie and like ourselves you've had more than your fair share of injuries. I hope it's an enjoyable match and we'll be out for revenge".

Brief Bits 29th August 2004
Two 'well-kent' faces from the past at Saturday's game were Eddie Garrett, our goal-scoring centre-forward from the early '60s and Tommy McGinn who had a brief spell as manager of the club back in 1989.

With Mark Shanks being linked with the managerial vacancy at Ayr United we were surprised when realised that four other former Queen of the South players were now actively serving as managers in Scottish football. There's Rowan Alexander (Gretna), Alan Moore (Stirling Albion), Des McKeown (Stenhousemuir) and, of course, Billy Reid who was down with Clyde at the weekend.

Match Reaction 28th August 2004
Despite a spirited second half fight back Queens slumped to their fourth home defeat in a row losing 1-0 to league leaders Clyde. Said manager Iain Scott, "I'm well aware that's four in a row we've lost at home but the commitment today was much better than our performances in our last two games. Our first half display was very disappointing but I felt we played well in the second half and deserved at least one goal. We created two or three really good chances however their 'keeper pulled off two fantastic saves. But Bryn Halliwell is a good 'shot stopper' and he certainly earned his bonus today. Never the less we should still have stuck at least one of our chances away".

Clyde boss Billy Reid admitted he was glad to come away with all three points. Said Billy, "We played very well in the first half and should have had the match all tied up by the interval but all credit to Queens they came out fighting and dominated the second half and at the end I was happy to hear the final whistle. But I've always said it's never easy at Palmerston".

Injury worries for Queens 26th August 2004
Queens have big injury worries prior to Saturday's match against league leaders Clyde at Palmerston.

Said manager Iain Scott "Don't ask me who's injured, ask me who's fit. It would be much easier! Eric Paton is out with a recurrence of his hip injury; Emilio Jaconelli is out, he pulled up in training last Friday with his hamstring again and hasn't trained since; Willie Gibson is out, he's just been diagnosed with a double hernia and the specialist reckons we're looking at about two months before he plays again. Big Brian Reid is doubtful and so too is David McNiven who's suffering from injuries to both knees while Gary Wood is suspended following his 'red card' against Falkirk on Saturday. Paul Hilland's father has had a second heart attack and we're uncertain about his availability but although keeper Craig Samson and Brian McLaughlin missed training earlier in the week we think both of them will be O.K. So that sums up our predicament.

"Clyde have maximum points from three games and sit top of the table. They're a very good side and will be hard to beat but we owe it to our fans to get some points on the board at Palmerston so we'll go out there and do our best. When all our players are fit I know we have a good team but I'm concerned we're getting so many injuries so early in the season. I've been off this week watching a couple of matches in the hope of spotting prospective signings and our present injury crisis certainly underlines the fact that we still need more players on board".

Reidy's view

Clyde boss Billy Reid commented "I'm really looking forward to Saturday since it's my first visit to Palmerston as Clyde manager. I'm an ex-Doonhamer myself as I was four years with Queen of the South and played over 170 games for them alongside players like Jimmy Robertson, Tommy Bryce and Graeme Robertson. It's a smashing club, it's a great pitch and Dumfries is a nice town which holds many happy memories for me. You also get good crowds down there.

"The present Queens' side also has some fine players. There's big Brian Reid and Jim Thomson in defence and Eric Paton, Brian McColligan and Steve Bowey in midfield. I rate 'Bowser' very highly, he's a right bundle of energy. You've also got the lad, David McNiven up front. We were hoping to sign him, but Queens got there first.

"Over the past few seasons Alan Kernaghan and I didn't have a very good track record against Queens, in fact I think we lost more games against you than any other side in our division. However, last season we won three out of four but in the game you did win, 4-1 at Palmerston just about this time last year, you really turned us over.

"For a part-time club you had an excellent record under John Connolly and I'm sure Iain Scott will be looking for a similar successful run. I have nothing but respect for Queen of the South. I know you've not had the best of starts to the season and we're sitting top of the league. But that means nothing in football and Palmerston is never an easy place to get a result.

"Our league has been the tightest in Scottish football those past few years and I think it's going to be tougher than ever this season. Every club will be out to get points on the board early and although we're going well at the moment, anything can happen. I wish Queens all the best--not on Saturday of course--and being a former player I'd like to see them finish well up the league again, but as long as it's below us".

Queens say 'no' to Bowser offer 26th August 2004

Baby Bowser arrives 25th August 2004
Baby Bowser, young Joseph, arrived at 6.10 on Tuesday, although six weeks early he weighed in at a healthy 5lbs 2oz. I've already got three kids from a previous relationship so am particularly happy for Nicola and so proud of her".

Cult Heroes 23rd August 2004
The BBC have been in touch with us as the following email explains:

"Football Focus has launched a new feature for the coming season and we need your help. Who are Queen of the South's cult heroes?

Can your fans come up with three players who had that something special - whether it was cheeky charisma, a player who made the crowd buzz or just his sartorial style!

These players won't necessarily be your all-time greats but the ones your fans remember with a smile rather than reverence.

Once we have a shortlist for Queens, we'll highlight your favourite cult heroes on one of our Saturday lunchtime Football Focus shows and hold a vote on our website that week. Queen of the South's winner will be announced the following week".

So to help out the BBC we have set up a voting form for you to vote for your top three, after a month we will close the voting and provide a shortlist for the BBC Football Focus programme - your reasons for each of the players would be useful too as some selected quotes are featured on the BBC website. Click on the Cult Heroes logo on the right hand side of the page to register your vote.
Match Reaction 21st August 2004
Last season Palmerston was a virtual fortress with only three games lost in eighteen home games. However this season we have lost three out of three on our home turf and our only two goals have come from the penalty spot. Quizzed by the press about the problem after the match Iain Scott commented, "We're not pressing any panic buttons yet. We're confident we have the players who can perform at this level and we hope to be bringing another player on board fairly soon. I only wish we could get our injury victims fit again and be able to make a selection from a bigger squad.

"Mistakes in defence cost us dearly this afternoon and their second goal was a real 'killer'. The match was delicately balanced at this time and could have gone either way, Jim Thomson has held his hands up and admitted he was to blame but he did say 'the ball moved in mid-air'. It was unfortunate for big Jim because he was our best player in the first half. Falkirk were a big strong side and very difficult to beat when they get in front. I thought we played quite well and fought hard but they got the breaks at the right time".

Said Falkirk manager John Hughes "That's our first win of the season and it's good to get that one under your belt, we've not scored a single goal in our last four meetings with Queens but we've put that 'bogey' to rest at last. Although we won I still think that Queens are a good side and will be up there fighting as the season progresses".

Welcome home Tommo 20th August 2004
Let's hope that all Queen's fans give 'all time great' Andy Thomson the reception he deserves at Palmerston tomorrow, despite the fact that he will be turning out for our opponents Falkirk. A goal-less performance is what we would like to see from Tommo - not something that we were ever used to.
Team News 19th August 2004
Following Tuesday night's 'shocker' Queens fans will be looking for a much-improved performance when they face Falkirk at Palmerston on Saturday. Said manager, Iain Scott "We had hoped that Emilio Jaconelli might have been back in the squad but, unfortunately, there's no chance. There's also a major doubt over Brian Reid who missed the midweek cup-tie but although our two strikers, Gary Wood and David McNiven have niggling injuries we're hoping both will be O.K. 'Bowser' and Eric Paton were substituted on Tuesday night but it was purely precautionary and both will play".

Craig Samson, who was on Under-21 international duty with Scotland in Hungary in midweek, returns to the squad while Willie Gibson is awaiting a specialist's report on a suspected double hernia. Added Scotty, "We had an excellent record against Falkirk last season but we'll certainly have to play a lot better than we did against Albion Rovers to get a result".

After a 'spying' mission to Palmerston on Tuesday night with his assistant, Brian Rice, Falkirk manager John Hughes aired his thoughts on the game. Said 'Yogi' with a smile "I won't let that result fool me for it's never easy playing a club from a lower division. I'll be judging Queens on their performance at St Johnstone on Saturday for I'm well aware how well they can really play. We met them four times last season and never even managed to score a goal in six hours of football. They beat us thrice and I've got to admit they deserved all three victories. Nevertheless they were entertaining games and we'll be out to turn the tables and remedy the situation.

"It's never easy coming to Palmerston and I know Queens had an excellent record there last year. However, I see Sean O'Connor's moved south. I wish the lad well but I'll be glad to see the back of him as he was a 'thorn in our flesh'. John Connolly has also moved on to St Johnstone but his assistant, Iain Scott, has taken over the helm so it will be more or less 'business as usual'. He's brought back Brian McLaughlin, an experienced winger and signed David McNiven, a prolific scorer from south of the border. Both are useful players and I'm sure Iain will have other ideas of his own.

"Queen of the South are without doubt the top part-time side in Scottish football and it's remarkable what they've achieved in the past two seasons and I've nothing but admiration for them. The park looks in tremendous condition and I'm really looking forward to Saturday's match".

Other famous faces

Other well-known spectators in the stand on Tuesday night were former managers, Mike Jackson and Billy McLaren who were along with our very own Iain McChesney. Mike was saying that he's now 'scouting' for Aston Villa while Billy is currently working with Rangers.

Reaction 17th August 2004
What a difference three days make in football. At 4.50pm on Saturday Queen's supporters were in a state of Nirvana having destroyed St.Johnstone 3-1 but tonight at 9.20pm they left Palmerston heads bowed in disbelief after seeing their team lose 2-1 to third division Albion Rovers.

An irate Iain Scott blasted his players after the match. Said the manager, "After Saturday we went out there tonight over confident. We had warned them before kick-off it wouldn't be easy, we warned them that Albion Rovers had beaten Raith Rovers in the Bell's Cup and we warned them to treat the opposition with respect for there are no 'certainties' in football. But it obviously fell on deaf ears and I'm not a happy man. Football's all about taking chances and we about eight good chances tonight and never took any of them. If you don't take your chances then football has a habit of kicking back at you and that's precisely what happened.

"We stopped passing the ball, we stopped getting the ball forward and our indiscipline in defence at the end was unforgivable".

Big injury worries for Queens 16th August 2004
Queens have been severely hit by injuries for tomorrow night's C.I.S. cup-tie against Albion Rovers at Palmerston. Four more players are listed as 'doubtful' while substitute keeper, Craig Samson, is on international duty with Scotland Under-21s and is unavailable. Striker, Gary Wood suffered a recurrence of his calf strain and had to be substituted during the second half at Perth on Saturday while defender, Brian Reid had pains in his posterior (for want of a better word) from early in the match. Both are reckoned to be very doubtful.

Skipper, Steve Bowey and David McNiven, our two-goal hero at St Johnstone, both have knee trouble but manager, Iain Scott says he's hoping the two of them might make it. Said 'Scotty' this afternoon "Bowser had an injection for a niggling knee injury on Sunday and as far as David's concerned, only time will tell. So with Emilio Jaconelli and Willie Gibson already out we're literally 'down to the bare bones'.

"Willie's seeing a specialist in Newcastle tomorrow but it looks like a double hernia which means he could be sidelined for up to ten weeks. It's a big blow for us for he's been looking good this season. Emilio, however, is starting light training on Wednesday a with a bit of luck could be in contention for Saturday's match against Falkirk.

"It won't be easy against Albion Rovers tomorrow night for we've had them watched and they're a big strong side. They beat Raith Rovers at Kirkcaldy in the last round and although we start favourites we'll have to go out there and do a professional job for there's no such thing as a 'certainty' in football".

Still enthusing over Saturday's great win 'Scotty' added "It was a tremendous result against the only team in our division we failed to beat last season. I was so glad I made it home in time for the game but it was 'touch and go' for it was 8.45 on Saturday morning when my plane actually touched down. My wife and daughter arrived back safely this morning which is a load of my mind after witnessing all the carnage in Florida".

Goals Galore 14th August 2004
A pile of goals were scored by former Queen's players this afternoon as Andy Aitken notched his first for Gretna in the same game that Derek Townsley scored the other for the 'almost English' side, then at Dingwall Alex Burke and John O'Neill kept the game even between Ross County and St.Mirren whilst Martin Glancy with two and Scott McLean gave Stirling Albion an emphatic 3-0 win over Brechin City.
Reaction 14th August 2004
Said 'Scotty' after the game "I'm absolutely delighted. It was well worth coming home early for. Obviously I missed last Saturday's match but from what I hear from Warren the big difference this afternoon was 'we took our chances'. It was a good all round performance but I was particularly pleased for David McNiven. He knows himself he's still lacking a bit in fitness but he scored two good goals today and should have had a 'hat-trick'. Our strikers did what they're there for, that's to stick the ball in the back of the net and I'm happy at that.

"After last week's disappointment it's great to get three points on the board but it's still 'early doors'. We now have two home league games in a row but Falkirk and Clyde will both be hard to beat and I think our league will be tighter than ever this season. I spoke to John Connolly after the game and he congratulated us but John was a wee bit subdued."

Chairman, David Rae, was also thrilled. Said Davy "I predicted that result at our meal prior to the match but the other directors just laughed at me. Maybe now they'll realise the Chairman does know a bit about football" he laughed. "We played really well today and we looked more like the 'full-timers' than they did. We passed the ball well and it was an excellent result and I felt the two strikers were exceptional. We were really 'up for it' from the kick-off and we could easily have won by more".

Saturday's match 12th August 2004
Queens head for Perth on Saturday and will come face-to-face with John Connolly for the first time since he departed Palmerston towards the end of last season. Said Warren Pearson "It's a massive game and I'm sure John Connolly will be saying the same. St Johnstone are a very experienced side and John has brought in a lot of new players since he took over. It's going to be a really tough match. We'll be all out to claw back the three points we dropped at Palmerston on Saturday and get back onto a winning streak again. Gary Wood is back in the squad following his calf strain but Eric Paton is struggling a bit and he'll need a fitness test before the game. Willie Gibson is definitely out with a suspected hernia and he's off to hospital tomorrow for an examination and Emilio Jaconelli will also be missing but he's gradually recovering from his hamstring injury".

Commenting on the match John Connolly said "It will certainly be an unusual fixture. Being the former Queen of the South manager it will feel a bit strange being in the opposing 'dug-out' but I'm sure it will add some extra spice to the game. I know most of the Queens' players, I know what they're capable of and I know what to expect. So it won't be easy. Both of us started the league campaign with a defeat and in midweek we had a really bad result in the C.I.S. Cup. So we'll have to stay focussed and get back on track very quickly. It's a big game for both clubs". J.C. says that, despite all the rain, the pitch is perfectly playable (At the time of writing--Thursday, 10.30 a.m.).

C.I.S. Cup News 12th August 2004
Tuesday night's postponement was a big disappointment for Queens fans. It must have been the first time in our club's history that a match was called off in August owing to a waterlogged pitch but it will now go ahead on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.30 p.m.

The draw for the second round of the C.I.S. Cup was made at lunchtime and Queens will meet Brechin City at Palmerston if they beat Albion Rovers on Tuesday night. If successful the tie would probably take place on Tuesday the 24th of August. Despite the controversy Queens must obviously have been seeded. With St Johnstone out of the competition we must have been moved up to take 4th seed from Division One thus joining the eight seeds from the Premier League.

Assistant manager, Warren Pearson enthused "I'm delighted, and so are all the lads. It's another home draw and it means that someone else will have all the travelling for a change. But we're taking it one game at a time and that's what we'll be stressing to all the players. We've still to beat Albion Rovers and cup football can be so different from normal league matches. Just look at some of the results on Tuesday night. Brechin aren't a bad team and have strengthened their squad during the summer by signing one or two experienced players. So we can't be complacent".

Said Chairman David Rae "Our fate is in our own hands. It's at home and we couldn't have wished for better than that but if can dispose of Albion Rovers and Brechin and make it to round three we'll definitely be in there with the 'big guns'. However we mustn't forget we've two hurdles to clear first and although they're not glamorous ties we've got everything to play for and that's an enormous incentive".

The first round threw up its fair share of 'shocks' with Stranraer beating Raith Rovers, Alloa defeating St Johnstone at Perth and Forfar destroying St Mirren 5-2 at Paisley. But it certainly didn't prove a 'money-spinner' with only four of the 11 ties attracting a gate of over 1000--the highest being 1500 at McDermid Park. Star of the night was none other than Alex Burke who, despite missing one penalty, netted a 'hat-trick' for his new club Ross County in a comfortable 3-0 victory at Dumbarton. That's six goals in three games for 'Burky'--quite an achievement.

Spotlight on Kevin--our unsung hero 11th August 2004
Today we turn the spotlight on one of the unsung heroes at Palmerston, our groundsman, Kevin McCormick. He has helped keep the pitch and the ground itself in pristine condition for 19 years and admits to "really enjoying the job". Well, most of the time anyway!

Kevin commenced working at Queen of the South as a 16-year-old in 1985. He recalls "Nobby Clark was manager then and that same year we won promotion to the First Division. I was enrolled for a Y.T.S. course but after only a month I was recalled and started full-time employment. Tom Kerr was head groundsman at the time and he guided me through those early years. However, coming from a farming background I had a fair bit of knowledge about agriculture so, in many ways I considered myself 'self-taught'

Kevin McCormick - Groundsman
"When Tom retired in 1996 I became head groundsman and I'd like to think I take a pride in my work. But I'm always willing to listen to advice and during his term as Chairman, Ronnie Bradford was a big help. Being a keen gardener he had a great knowledge of horticulture and passed on a lot of helpful tips. In contrast Norman Blount openly admitted he knew absolutely nothing about grass, soil or drainage and left it all to me. He was a great Chairman and a very likable person but wouldn't know the difference between a packet of grass seed and a bag of fertiliser" he joked. "When Davie Rae took over I knew he'd been a farmer all his life but he never interferes. He told me 'Kevin, you know the job a lot better than me' so he just let's me get on with it".

During his time at Palmerston Kevin has worked with no fewer than 12 managers and coaches. "I got on fairly well with them all" he admitted "But I'd give particular mention to Ally Macleod, an extremely jovial person and a real character and also John Connolly who was always very approachable and his record at the club speaks for itself. But I do get on well with the present managers, Iain Scott and Warren Pearson--also Kenny Crichton".

When it came to players he confessed there had been a real varied selection over the years. "Andy Thomson could be a right practical joker at times but was always very helpful; Andy Goram was another prankster and you had to be prepared for anything with him and present day, Davie Bagan is the one you've got to watch". You must have witnessed some unbelievable practical jokes in the dressing room in your time we asked? "I sure have" was the reply, but in the true unwritten confidentiality of a groundsman he refrained from naming any and just laughed.

Two of the nicest players he says were Bobby Parker, our classy full-back from the '80s and from the current squad, big Brian Reid. Both of them he described as "real gentlemen". But when it came to the best-ever players he opted for Tommy Bryce and Andy Thomson. "They were both tremendous goal scorers" he said "And as for 'Bowser' he's the most energetic player I've ever seen".

His most memorable game was the Challenge Cup Final against Falkirk at Fir Park. "Although we lost it was a fantastic match and a super day out was had by all. And for a change I wasn't working" he remarked.

However it's not always an easy job being a groundsman and only last month Kevin was attacked by a seagull while cutting the grass with the hand mower and they've also been some minor emergencies over the years. He added "There's always turnstile doors being jammed on match days or keys being lost so it's then a job for the crowbar but the biggest panic came one afternoon just before an important cup-tie. In the pre-match 'warm-up' the keeper dived and happened to grab the upright and it completely snapped. It took a stab up the back and some six inch nails to carry out a quick repair job and after getting the OK from the referee the game kicked-off only five minutes late".

Although he enjoys his work Kevin admits it can be hard-going at times and he's glad to have Tony Telfer in two days a week to assist with the odd-jobs." And there's always a few supporters who help out from time to time particularly the three Ians--Ian Black, Ian Thompson and Ian Finlay. They're also to the fore whether it be painting in the close season or clearing snow off the park in the winter".

Do you think the new training facilities at the Crichton create a lot of extra work for you we queried? "It's not too bad at all" he answered. "It already was a super surface and amazingly flat, so all that we needed was some feeding and a bit of extra drainage. Anyway, my brother Gary is head gardener at the Crichton so he's always there if I need any advice".

Asked about Kevin and his work, Chairman David Rae said "He is a loyal and reliable employee. He's always helpful and conscientious and nothing's too much bother to him".

So just have a good look at the pitch the next time you're at Palmerston and you'll see why Kevin McCormick is worth his weight in gold. Only a few weeks ago the Newcastle First Team Coach, John Carver, remarked how good it looked while standing at the tunnel, and on Saturday Ross County boss, Alex Smith said he'd 'never seen the park looking better'. Praise indeed, so well done Kevin!

Cup-tie Latest 9th August 2004
Queens are hoping that Gary Wood will be back in the squad for tomorrow night's C.I.S. cup-tie against Albion Rovers. Stated assistant manager, Warren Pearson "Gary wanted to play on Saturday but we didn't want to risk it. It's still 50-50 whether he plays or not but we'll be giving him a fitness test prior to the match".

Emilio Jaconelli is still nursing a hamstring injury and it's reckoned he's one to two weeks away from playing again but the good news is that the ever-consistent Eric Paton returns to the squad and is almost certain to feature.

Commenting on the game the Albion Rover's manager, Kevin McAllister, had this to say "We're really looking forward to the match. Queens are a First Division side and playing at home so all the pressure will be on them. The pitch is always good down at Palmerston and it allows you to pass the ball about which will suit us fine. We went to Raith Rovers in the Challenge Cup and came away with a good win so we'll be looking to do the same tomorrow night.

"I know we lost 6-0 at Gretna on Saturday but there were never six goals in it. They scored two goals in a minute in the first half which left us chasing the game and they've brought in three quality strikers who gave us a bit of bother in the second half. But we're not downhearted and we'll be really up for this one. It's a cup-tie and anything can happen but we know we're in for a really tough match for Queen of the South are a very good side as they have proved by holding their own in the First Division over the past two seasons.

"I'm told it's ten years since our two clubs last met and it was in this same cup. You won 2-0 that night so perhaps it's our turn this time".

Match Reaction 7th August 2004
Warren Pearson admitted to being a 'bit dejected' at the end of the game, said the Assistant Manager, "We had a good pre-season and a good win at Airdrie last week but the buzz just wasn't there today. There were some strong words in the dressing room after the final whistle and they were told that the performance just wasn't good enough for Queen of the South. I had a feeling it was going to end in a draw but Burkey came back to haunt us. This happens so often when a player changes clubs but in fairness he took his goal well. We had two or three good chances to get back on level terms in the second half but just couldn't get the ball in the net. However I was pleased with our new striker Chris Armstrong. He's strong and physical and very good in the air, he was 'thrown in at the deep end' this afternoon when Gary Wood was deemed unfit, Chris is still two or three weeks behind the rest in fitness and said he was very tired at the end".

Ross County boss Alex Smith was naturally delighted with the result. Said Alex "Queens were a bit of a bogey team for us last season and we only managed to beat them once in five matches, also Palmerston is never an easy place to come and win so I'm 'over the moon' with the three points". Added goal-hero Alex Burke "It felt a bit funny running onto Palmerston in a Ross County strip but I enjoyed the game and the Queens fans didn't hold any ill feeling against me. Last season Queens only lost three times at Palmerston so it's a big bonus for us to win and a great start to the league". He was just about to describe his goal but the interview ended abruptly with a high pitched scream as David Bagan passed him in the corridor gave the goal scorer a 'wedgie'.

Striker Problems 6th August 2004
Queens have been hit with striker problems prior to the big league kick-off at Palmerston tomorrow. Gary Wood injured a calf muscle in training on Wednesday night and only has a 50/50 chance of playing. So with Emilio Jaconelli definitely sidelined with a hamstring injury home fans may get the opportunity of seeing the two recent signings, Chris Armstrong and David McNiven leading the attack against Ross County. Eric Paton is now back in full training and could be back in action in the not too distant future.

Queens had an excellent record against the Dingwall side last season losing only once in five meetings but County have strengthened their squad considerably during the summer break introducing players such as Gary McSwegan, Stuart Taylor and, of course, Alex Burke, a big favourite with Queens' fans last season.

Team News 5th August 2004
The opening league clash of the season this weekend will see Queens face Ross County at Palmerston. Two players will be missing from the squad with Eric Paton just having resumed training after recovering from his hip injury and Emilio Jaconelli likely to be sidelined for another couple of matches following his hamstring injury. In the squad however will be new signing Chris Armstrong and David McNiven who despite having to be replaced at half-time last week recovered very quickly from the knock.
CIS Cup Match 5th August 2004
The CIS Insurance Cup game versus Albion Rovers will take place on Tuesday evening of next week with a 7.30pm kick-off.
Cup draw comments 4th August 2004
In the draw for the second round of the Bell's Challenge Cup made in Glasgow this morning Queens were paired with St Johnstone. The match will be played at Perth on either Tuesday, 31st of August or Wednesday, 1st of September, although the Tuesday night appears to be the favourite option at present.

Here's what three of those concerned had to say about the draw:

WARREN PEARSON--I'll have to modify my words on this one. It's a shame it's away from home again for we don't fear any team at Palmerston, but having said that there's clubs we could have been paired with a lot further away than St Johnstone. It will be a real David and Goliath battle with Queens being David. However the players will be really up for it and we all know what happened with David and Goliath.

DAVID RAE (Chairman)-- It's certainly not the best of draws for us but it could have been Ross County or Peterhead and that would have been a lot worse for a mid-week tie. But it will create a lot of interest playing St Johnstone twice in a relatively short space of time. The players will have two opportunities to prove something to their old boss but, by the same token, John Connolly will be out to prove himself to us.

JOHN CONNOLLY-- It's not the ideal scenario for either Queens or ourselves. We meet on Saturday the 14th of August and then again at the end of the month. It's two sides from the same division and that means we will clash at least five times this season. It's not the situation any manager wants and I don't think it's particularly fair to the fans either. However, from our point of view it's a home tie and I'm quite happy on that score.

New striker signs 2nd August 2004
Chris Armstrong officially became a Queen of the South player when he signed a contract this afternoon. Chris who is actually only 19 joined his new club for training tonight and looked fit and impressive. He's come on a one-year contract, Queens having bought out the remainder of his present contract at Rochdale. The ex-Leeds United player said he was looking forward to playing football in Scotland and hoped to be joining the training at the Crichton on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. He already knows Chris Scott who comes from his home town of Sunderland and shares his birthplace, Durham, with Steve Bowey.

News from the Physio room 2nd August 2004
The news isn't too bad from Kenny Crichton's physio room. Emilio Jaconelli's hamstring injury is not as bad as was first feared and taking an optimistic view the striker could be back in a fortnight. Eric Paton resumed full training tonight and has set himself a two week target to be back in action. As for David McNiven, it was only a stud on the calf and he says he'll be okay for Saturday.

Match Reaction 31st July 2004
Queens pulled off a well earned 2-0 victory at Airdrie this afternoon and Warren Pearson was absolutely delighted with both the result and the performance, after the match he said, "The game very much followed the pattern that we expected, they were on a high having been promoted last season just as we were a couple of years ago. The first half was fairly even but after Gary Wood scored I felt we got on top. We passed the ball about really well, played possession football and our movement off the ball was particularly pleasing. After he came on Emilio Jaconelli's performance was outstanding and he was involved in both goals, however it was a tremendous team performance and I was proud of the lads but I'd like to give a special mention to Brian Reid and Jim Thomson. Their presence and experience has been magnificent both on the pitch and in the dressing room. As for the fans, you were brilliant. Thank's a million for the support. I spoke to Scotty on the phone after the match and he was ecstatic".

After his Battlecry on the website this week Bowser was glad if it had helped inspire the team and the fans. Said the skipper, "It's always great to start the season with a victory and I thought we thoroughly deserved it. I'm told that apart from the Scottish Cup Airdrie haven't lost a game since Christmas so that makes the win even better. It was hot out there but we adapted well. In the second half we took control of the game and just as we did so many times last season we soaked up the first half pressure and came good".

Although disappointed Airdrie manager Sandy Stewart praised Queens and admitted the better team won. "It was a typical cup tie but Queens took their chances well and deserved their success. After they scored the first goal they really got on top and the penalty just killed the game and put it beyond our reach. It was good to meet a first division side in the cup rather than one from the lower leagues as it gave us a chance to see what we will be up against this coming season".

Both David McNiven and Emilio Jaconelli sustained injuries this afternoon, McNiven suffering a slight calf strain and Jaconelli a hamstring injury the extent of which will be fully assessed on Monday.

Striker Signs Up 30th July 2004
All our fans will be 'over the moon' to hear that Queens have at last acquired another striker today, Chris Armstrong. Said assistant manager Warren Pearson, "We're absolutely delighted, we've been talking to Chris for a week or two but now everything's sorted out and we've agreed terms. He won't be playing against Airdrie tomorrow but he'll be joining us for training on Monday night. He's a big lad at 6ft 2in and that's what we've been after. He's only twenty but joined Leeds United as a youngster and was five years at Elland Road. Since May he's been on the books at Rochdale".

Bowser's Battlecry 29th July 2004
An upbeat Steve Bowey spoke out this week and blasted out his own personal battlecry. "Let's build on last season and let's go that bit higher in the table!". Added 'captain courageous' "We've finished fifth for the past two seasons so it would be a great achievement if we could finish even higher. There's only Hamilton and ourselves 'part-time' so once again we're up against eight 'full-time' sides but that hasn't bothered us in the past. But it's important we get off to a good start with three of our first four league games at home. If we can get points on the board early it takes a lot of pressure off and allows us to play a more relaxed type of football. As in past seasons our first priority is to consolidate our First Division status and proceed from there. Fifth again would be acceptable, fourth would be great, third would be tremendous and higher than that, magnificent. I'd really love to win the title for it would be 'one in the eye' for the bookies who have us favourites for relegation once more".

Ready for the off!
Do you think we have a stronger squad than last season we asked? "At the end of last season we lost two very good strikers, big Sean and 'Burky'. Between them they scored over 30 goals so it's going to be hard to replace them. However the gaffer's signed David McNiven, a real goal-getter, and he's certainly been knocking them in at training. I know he's still on the look-out for another good striker and I've every faith in him getting the right man. Andy Aitken was another big favourite to leave but we appear to be well covered in defence with Chris Scott and Tommy English, two lads from my part of the country, and also Paul Hilland, already signed. Brian McLaughlin is back and he's a very experienced player and we've got Craig Samson on loan again to challenge Colin Scott in goal. Whether we're stronger or nor--only time will tell!".

As for the new training facilities at the Crichton, 'Bowser' describes them as "Fantastic, a big improvement on our previous venue. It's a great playing surface, it's nice and flat and there's plenty of grass--so you can't ask for better than that. He added "When we get the floodlights up we'll be able to train there all the year round. It's a huge step in the right direction. If I wasn't working I'd be right up there to train with the young lads but if I do manage to get the odd day off I'll be first there in the morning. I'm a fitness fanatic and proud of it".

Where do you see your future was the next question. "In the close season I had the opportunity to go 'full-time' with two or three clubs but I turned them down to stay with Queen of the South". But why? "Because I'm very happy at the club" he responded. "I've a lot of respect for 'Scotty' and 'Wasa' and I was delighted when they took over when John Connolly left. Although they're my bosses I'm very close to them both--us 'Geordies' stick together! The atmosphere in the dressing room has always been brilliant and though I'm skipper I'm treated just the same as the rest of the lads. I wouldn't have it any other way. And finally the Queens' fans. I've always had a tremendous rapport with them and I sincerely hope I always will. They give us 110% support, both home and away. They're always right behind us, particularly away from home when they seem to be much more vociferous, and it gives us all a lift. They make the club and without them there wouldn't be a Queen of the South. So I hope to be at Palmerston for a good few years yet".

Two out for Cup clash at Airdrie 29th July 2004
Queens will be minus Paul Hilland and Eric Paton for the Challenge Cup tie at Airdrie on Saturday. Said assistant manager, Warren Pearson "Paul is unavailable owing to illness in the family while Eric is still recovering from a hip injury. Eric has been getting a course of injections from a specialist and appears to be responding to the treatment but it could be a week or two before he's fit again". Here's hoping the doc's getting to the bottom of it! Added Warren "We're hopeful that Emilio Jaconelli will feature. He's been out for a fortnight with a thigh injury but I think he might make it".

New Signings? 29th July 2004
On the subject of new signings Warren emphasised "We'll have the existing squad for the first two games but hopefully we'll be signing two new players after that. It will be a striker and another defender. Most of the ground work has been done but both have still to put pen to paper".
