Burns Supper, 28th March, Cairndale
The club are delighted to announce that after the success of Blue Christmas, we are holding a Queen of the South Burns Supper at the Cairndale Hotel on Friday the 28th March.

We're toasting two of the region's finest institutions with some speakers that are assured to entertain. The host is the Sun's very own Mr Bill Leckie, and he is joined by fellow football pundit and former Queens player Mr Des McKeown. These two are a double-act that will be sure to make you merrier than a drop of whisky could. As well as Bill and Des, renowned Burns speaker Davie Shankland will be giving us a stirring rendition of the Immortal Memory, former chairman Norman Blount will be toasting the club and Director Colin Rutherford replying from the club.

Add to this some smashing Burns fare (vegetarian haggis available) and the chance to win some great raffle prizes, and it should make for a rip-roaring night that Rabbie himself would have been proud of.

Tickets are £25 per person - to reserve a ticket or a table, give Jamie Rutherford a call on 07763 373817 or pop into the office at Palmerston Park. Why not pick yours up when you collect your ticket for the Quearter-final match?

FOOTBALLERS LIVES 29th February 2008
Our featured player today is Bob Harris, one of our top performers at present. He was named 'Man of the Match' at the recent Stirling Albion game and 'wee Bob' thoroughly deserved the accolade. Still only 20, he joined us from Clyde in the close season and must rate one of Gordon Chisholm's best signings. Although not big in stature he more than makes up for that with enthusiam, endeavour and the 'heart of a lion'.

Bob looks for a pass

What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
The most exciting was lining up against Celtic in the cup at Broadwood two years ago when I was with Clyde. Even though we lost 2-1 I'll never forget it. The biggest for me however was for Clyde against Rangers at Ibrox in the CIS Cup even though we got beaten 5-2.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
I've not been in the game long enough yet to have anything too embarrasing. But no doubt something will happen. Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
Big Sean O'Connor. He's a tremendous asset with his strength, height and power. He so good in the air and is our target man and he's been really knocking in the goals in over the past few weeks. He had to move to defence when big Jim was sent off at Firhill on Saturday and still played a 'blinder'.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
Glasgow Rangers. I was a season ticket holder at Ibrox when I was younger but had to give it up when I signed for Clyde. However, I'll always have a 'soft spot' for the mighty Gers.

What's your favourite film or video?
Braveheart, starring Mel Gibson. I'm a bit of a patriot when it comes to my country and, although I don't get to many Scotland games, I'm an ardent 'armchair fan'.

Your favourite food and drink?
To keep big 'Lauchie' happy, some of us trip along to 'Subway' after training. His wife runs it and I must admit I love their meatball marinara. As for drink, a bottle of Miller.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
My lucky pants. They've never let me down yet. (Enough said 'wee man', there's always a first time).

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Hollywood, USA. Just to see what all the fuss is about.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
Eva Mendes. I think she looked fabulous in the film 'Fast and Furious'. A real star.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
Yes. Usually after a match to check out what's being said about us. But I must say it's mostly fair comments.

Next Friday our featured player is Jamie McQuilken.

A new date for Andy's Dinner 29th February 2008
Queen of the South's great run in this season's Scottish Cup has brought it's own problems for the organisers of Andy Aitken's Testimonial Speakers' Dinner. Originally it was planned for Saturday,12th April, but the date clashed with the Cup semi-finals. And with Queens hoping for a home victory against Dundee next Saturday, which would see them through to the last four for the first time in 58 years, a change of date has been made.

The Speakers' Dinner will now be held at the Crichton's Easterbrook Hall on Saturday, 17th May with 360 expected to attend. The evening will commence with a Champagne Reception and Corporate Tables can be reserved by conntacting Ian McLatchie at the Queens Hotel, Lockerbie. (Tel. 0776 434 9549).

Another event on the 'Annan Lads' calendar is a football match between a Queen of the South All-Star Xl and Annan Athletic to be played at Galabank on Friday, 11th July. The All-Star squad has already been published but one noted addition is Rowan Alexander who has agreed to 'pull on his boots' again.

In August a golf tournament is planned and will be held at the Dumfries and Galloway Club and a second Speakers' Dinner is planned for November.

A Race Night held last month in the Townhouse Hotel was a complete 'sell-out' and enjoyed by all.

Tickets selling well 28th February 2008
Considering tickets for the cup-tie against Dundee only went on sale at the Palmerston office on Sunday, the 5000 mark has almost been reached, so we're on target for a 'sell-out'. This figure of course includes the 2200 purchased by the Dundee fans.

Team News 28th February 2008
Jim Thomson will miss Saturday's game against Hamilton following his 'straight red' at Firhill. JT could be suspended for up to three league matches but is eligible to play in the cup-tie against Dundee. Initially the club were set to lodge an appeal but after 'lengthy consideration' it was decided not to proceed.

Bob Harris came off against Thistle as a precautionary measure after feeling a twinge in his hamstring. He has a 50-50 chance of playing but the manager will assess the situation come Saturday.

Although not yet fully fit, Jim Lauchlan will be drafted back into the squad.

That wonderful picture of you! 28th February 2008
When Billy Reid leaves the team bus on Saturday and strides through the players' entrance to the away dressing room he'll no doubt have his customary glance up at his photo which still hangs on the adjacent corridor. "It's a much younger Billy Reid that looks down at me" the Hamilton manager laughs. "And what do I look like with that hair".

But he was quick to point out, "I had four good years at Palmerston and made over 160 appearances, so Queen will always have a special place in my heart. We'd a great team then and I still remember the day we clinched the League Championship up at Arbroath and the celebrations that followed. We also had a memorable cup match against Celtic and some real battles with Dunfermline.

'That' photo!
"I scored one of my best-ever goals down there at the Terregles Street end. I can't remember who it was against but I recall vividly hitting it on the half-volley from the corner of the penalty box and it flew into the top right-hand corner of the net like a rocket".

Billy's looking forward to Saturday's encounter and is fully expecting another close tussle. He adds, "Over the past two seasons there's been little between us. We drew four times last season and this time around we've won two and Queens one--all three just by that odd goal. 'Chis' will have his players well motivated and it will be another tough match.

"I was a bit disappointed on that last visit to Dumfries. Queens won 2-1, but in unreal circumstances. I thought we played very well, but three minutes of 'madness' cost us dearly. But, having said that, my old team has done us a couple of real favours by beating our promotion rivals Dundee twice in recent months.

"They meet the Dens Parkers in the quarter-final of the Cup next week and I wish them luck. It's a massive game for them but they're on an amazing run of form just now and I'm told the last time they lost was up at our place at New Year. I really think Queens can do it and reach the semi-finals for the first time in over 50 years.

"I always look forward to my trips down to Palmerston. Queen of the South have a smashing set of Directors and I always enjoy my wee bit banter with the fans beside the 'dug-out'. It's all good-natured and harmless".

Bill Goldie
League leaders at Palmerston 26th February 2008
Queens face league leaders Hamilton at Palmerston on Saturday and will be hoping to extend their fine unbeaten run to nine games. The last time we lost was actually to Accies at New Douglas Park on January 2nd which says a lot.

Although practically 'unbeatable' on the astro-turf at 'Fort Douglas', having lost only once in the league over the past couple of seasons, their away form isn't quite so impeccable. We beat them 2-1 here at Palmerston back in November but the match was bizarre in the sense that both our counters were actually deemed own goals.

Some journalists said 'we won ugly' that day while others claimed 'both goals came off their keeper'. However, the keeper, under pressure, only helped net-bound strikes over the line. Sometimes we have great wins and sometimes we have lucky wins, but they all count.

However, Gordon Chisholm insisted, "That's all in the past and I'm not getting dragged into it. We came back from one down to beat them 2-1 and the final result is all that matters. On our two visits to Hamilton we lost 1-0 but on both occasions I felt we merited a share of the points. There's never been any more than a goal between the two sides this season--that's how close it's been".

Looking back at Saturday's match against Partick Thistle the manager said he was proud of his players and the performance. He added, "Although down to ten men we battled well. We kept our shape and at half-time the players still felt they could win. And we nearly did! In the final minute their keeper made a good save from John Stewart and had that gone in what a result it would have been.

"The support at Firhill on Saturday was again fantastic. I believe there were about 500 up for the game but it felt more like 800 with the noise they were making".

But 'Chis' is still adament that it was never a 'red-card' when Jim Thomson was sent off and raged, "I've watched the video ten times and it was never a 'straight red'. Big Jim's a honest guy and there was no badness intended. He actually won the ball in the tackle and it was there for all to see. The dramatics of the Thistle player obviously influenced the referee's decision. It was harsh!.

"Not a single person in either dug-out suggested it was any more than a 'yellow' and even Ian McCall himself in his post-match interview with the press admitted that. Referees are human, and just like the rest of us make mistakes, but it's good when they 'hold their hands up' and admit it.

"As I speak I'm on my way to lodge an appeal with a referee supervisor at the S.F.A. and we'll take it from there".

Bill Goldie
Off to Australia 26th February 2008
All at Palmerston will be sorry to hear that James Baty is leaving to go to Australia. A likeable young lad, he has been on our books now for ten years and a signed player for the last four. Although he never really gaduated to the First Team he's turned out on numerous occasions for the Reserves and Youth teams. He stays in Kirkcudbright and is currently out on loan to Threave Rovers. James, who also helps Kevin at Palmerston as assistant groundsman admits,

"I've loved every minute of my time at Palmerston and I'll be sorry to leave".

The 20-year-old has also helped out with visits to local schools. It's another job he really loves and has been a great ambassador for Queen of the South.

He leaves for 'down under, on the 14th of May and adds, "I'll be staying with Warren Moon who I befriended when he was at Palmerston. He's a coach of a team at the moment and just back from injury. He's playing in the Eastern Suburb 'B' Division just now but hopes to get back up again to the 'A' League.

"I'll be with Warren until I'm settled and I'll be trying to get a team of my own as soon as possible". So, best of luck in the 'Land of Oz', Jamie.

Youth Reports 26th February 2008
Stirling Albion 16s v QOS 16s
QOS 16s were away to Stirling on Sunday, the game being played on the recently laid astro-grass near Forthbank and had to endure the whole range of weather conditions, wind, rain and sun! QOS started reasonably well, creating a number of chances with both Reilly and Smillie particularly unlucky not to open QOSıs account. Stirling took the lead just before the end of the period. The second period saw an improvement from QOS without unfortunately unable to convert any of the chanced they created with Degnan and a Dougan header just missing the target. Late in the period Stirling doubled their advantage. The third period was QOSıs best spell, their passing and movement creating a number of good goal-scoring opportunities. This endeavour was rewarded when Degnan played a great ball into the box which Stirling managed to scramble clear but only as far as the edge of the box, where Orsi pounced, controlled the ball well before placing the ball home to reduce the deficit. QOS pressed hard for the equaliser but just failed. Overall, barring a couple of defensive errors, QOS played well but need to work hard on their final delivery into the last third to give their forwards a better chance.

St Johnstone 15s v QOS 15s
QOS 15's took on St Johnstone at Perth on Sunday. QOS got off to a positive start and good work from Middlemiss and Nicol saw QOS threaten with some good early interplay . An excellent combination between Nicol and Dillon saw Murphy give QOS a deserved lead with a fine drive from 15 yards . Against the run of play St Johnstone equalised after a series of missed tackles and almost immediately an unfortunate slip by a QOS defender gifted St Johstone the lead. In the second period QOS survived an early onslaught and two excellent saves by goalkeeper McCulloch kept QOS in the match. The remainder of the period saw both teams share the exchanges and the period finished with no further scoring. In the third period QOS showed a more attacking style and good play by McHarrie and Hoad were the highlight of the period but unfortunately St Johnstone scored a third goal at the death. This was a disap.ointing result as the score does not truly reflect the balance of the game and it is hoped that the result will be reversed later in the season, The 15's return to home soil with a match at Dumfries Academy on Sunday against Queens Park.

QOS 14s v Morton 14s
By QOSıs recent high standards this was an indifferent, if not poor display in which proverbially, defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. Morton are a decent team, but Queens have played against, and beaten, better sides this season. QOS got off to a flying start in the first period, courtesy of a tremendous hat-trick by Johnstone. His first was a 12 yard volley after a long ball in caused confusion in the Morton defence. His second was a clever knock in at the near post after good work by Hooper down the right flank with his third similar to his opener but equally well taken. However Morton pulled one back when, after a harmless looking attack, the home defence opened up like the Red Sea to allow a Morton forward to score, reducing their deficit. The second period saw some enforced changes as the effects of last weekıs bruising encounter took it`s toll. This knocked QOS out of their rhythm and they found it difficult to build on their lead. Morton further reduced the leeway from the penalty spot after, again, some hesitation in the home defence. In the third period, Morton squared the match via an own goal when a low cross from the left was deflected into the QOS net. QOS then suffered another blow when Jordan Muirhead was seriously injured and required hospital treatment. Morton`s winner was a good goal. Their big centre latched onto a loose ball and thundered a volley in from 25 yards. All in all, this was a bad day at the office for this young QOS team, but they will bounce back. Jordan is expected to be in plaster for a week and sidelined for a further four or five weeks. Everyone at QOS wishes wee Joe a speedy and full recovery.

Dundee cup-tie 25th February 2008
We've been informed that Dundee now have less than 80 tickets left to sell, and following Saturday's big win over Stirling Albion they should move today. So it looks certain the East Stand's going to be full!

Following his 'red card' at Firhill, Jim Thomson will miss Saturday's encounter with league leaders, Hamilton, but will be available for the cup game. However, any such sending-off for 'violent conduct' this Saturday would mean automatic suspension in the cup. So, all Queens' players be warned!

Match reaction 23rd February 2008
Although we failed to make it 8 wins in a row a goalless draw at Firhill this afternoon was acceptable considering we played a full hour with only 10 men. Influential skipper Jim Thomson was sent off for a tackle on Mark Roberts but it certainly didn't warrant a red card and the Queens fans made that clear to the referee by their vocal reaction. Earlier the on-form Bob Harris had to leave the field injured but a heroic rear guard action by a determined Queens side held out for a share of the points. After our captains dismissal Sean O'Connor partnered Andy Aitken in the centre of defence and kept the scoring chances for Thistle to a minimum. The pair were tremendous and denied Thistle any clear cut scoring chances. Infact we could well have won the game in the final minute when substitute John Stewart collected a long kick out by Jamie MacDonald and only a fine stop from home keeper Jonathan Tuffey spared his sides blushes. However we're still fourth in the league and few will complain at that. Gordon Chisholm was full of praise for his gallant troops and said,

"Considering we were down to 10 men after only 30 minutes I thought we were magnificent. I don't think Jim Thomson deserved to walk. He did catch the boy, it was definitely a booking but never a red card. Even the Thistle bench indicated that when the big man was coming off the field. Wee Bob Harris who's been one of our best players in recent weeks had to come off injured after only 15 minutes so taking into account the circumstances it was a great result and every player was a hero. They were all outstanding, it was a great all-round team effort and the spirit and togetherness of the players was superb. We didn't win but we didn't lose. John Stewart came very close to securing a winner in the dying minutes."

Thistle manager Ian McCall admitted himself that, "It was never a sending off. To my mind it spoiled the game. A draw was a fair result."

Re-arranged league game 23rd February 2008
The league match versus Livingston originally scheduled for the 8th March 2008 has been re-arranged and will now take place on the 25th March 2008 with a 7.45pm kick-off.
FOOTBALLERS LIVES 22nd February 2008
Today our skipper, Jim Thomson, is the player in the limelight. All being well big JT will begin his Testimonial Year in January and has been a huge favourite with the 'Palmerston Faithful' over those past nine years. Jim has made over 300 first team appearances for us and has been voted 'Player of the Season' by the fans no fewer than four times. He is all set to 'tie the knot' and marry his fiancee, Victoria, in June and she might even manage to make an honest man of him yet--if that's possible!

What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
When we won the League Championship up at Forfar and gained promotion to the First Division. My favourite games would be those against the 'Old Firm'--in particular the one I played for Clyde against Rangers which was shown live on Sky TV.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
Conceding an own goal in a match against St Johnstone. It should have been an easy one to clear but I ended up putting it in the net.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
Wee Bob Harris. He's still young but learning fast. He's totally fearless.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
It's got to be Real Madrid. My all-time favourite player Zinedine Zidane played for them. With all that Spanish sunshine I can just imagine my wonderful tan showing up so well in those famous all-white strips.

What's your favourite film or video?
Goodfellas, or perhaps Scarface.

Your favourite food and drink?
Spaghetti bolognese with some crispy garlic bread washed down with a glass or two of a quality red wine.

A smart black Hugo Boss shirt. I feel good in it and always were it when I'm going out anywhere special.

Disneyland in Florida. But I'd never go without Victoria and our wee one, Bailey.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
Carmen Electra the former Baywatch babe. For obvious reasons which I don't have to explain.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?

A hard game on Saturday 21st February 2008
Ian McCall says he's really looking forward to 'locking horns' with Queens again but stresses, "It will be very, very hard as we're up against the form team in Britain at the moment. Queens have won their last seven games and that takes some doing in this league.

"Although we won 2-0 at Firhill on their previous visit I must admit we were a bit fortunate to take all three points. Queens played well and a fair result would probably have been a draw.

"Last season when I was manager at Palmerston we had a dreadful start but came good in the second half of the season. And I'd like to think that some of the players I fetched in then helped 'Chis' build the team he has today. They did have a tough time with suspensions and injuries early on and fans being fans don't take that into consideration when they make judgement. But I've got to say, Queens are certainly coming good now.

"Chis', Kenny and 'Snowy' have done a tremendous job down there and although we'll be all out to beat them on Saturday, and make it three wins in a row against them, at other times their result is the first I look for, and I'm pleased when they win.

"As I've said so many times before, I'm a Doonhamer myself and used to go to all Queens' home games as a boy with my dad. So, I'm not going to change overnight--I'll always have a 'soft spot' for them.

"And I'm not being cynical saying that! Back in August I tipped Queens to finish in the top five this season--they're fourth at present and if they continue to play the way they are, could finish in the top three.

"They're also into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup again and this time they have a more realistic chance to make it into the semi-finals. We nearly made it last season but came up against an in-form Hibs side who beat us 2-1. This time Queens are against Dundee, a side they've beaten twice already this season, and I fancy them to win through".

Phoning the manager every Thursday for the up-to-date team news has had it's moments this season with unpredictable squads being named owing to the crippling injury lists. However, the past couple of weeks have been a pleasure hearing 'Chis' state, "Everyone's fit! Same squad!".

But as we all know it wasn't the case a few months ago and the busiest person at the club was our Physio, John Kerr, who was working 'overtime' just to get a team on the park. 'Kerrso' recalls, "It was suspensions at first then a horrific spell of injuries and my treatment room almost needed a revolving door with so many players in and out. I felt there was never enough hours in the day and, at times, we were forced to play players when they weren't really fully fit. It was that bad!"

But what a difference now we have a full squad at our disposal and a lot of credit must go to John for all his dedication and hard work over that difficult period.

His 'better half'', Jeanne, is an avid Queens' fan herself and John adds, "She's never off that Official Website and keeps me up-to-date with all the club news. Her passion at the moment is 'Footballers Lives' on a Friday as she likes to read about all those fit young players. Her two favourites are Paul Burns and Bob Harris so, if I'm ever hard-pushed, I'll get Jeanne to roll up her sleeves and give 'Burnsy' and wee Bobby a rub down herself".

Annual General Meeting 19th February 2008
The AGM of Queen of the South FC was held in the Nith Hotel, Glencaple tonight with Chairman, David Rae, welcoming a record 96 shareholders. Tommy Harkness, Colin Rutherford and David Rae himself were all re-appointed as directors of the club.

The Chairman then announced the news all had been waiting for--Tescos was being handed back to Queen of the South F.C. and this was greeted by loud applause. Added Mr Rae, "Only this afternoon we were informed that it had all been 'rubber-stamped' and the building was being returned to the club. The final transaction will take place on the 11th or 12th of March". He continued, "It's a great asset and Tescos have done us quite a favour as they could well have sub-let it. Should we let it out ourselves we would want to ensure that car-parking would be available to us on match-days and, this time, any lease would be index-linked".

The Chairman conceded that the club had again made a loss but decidedly less than last year but he stressed, "We don't have an overdraft, the club is still in the 'black' and it always will be as long as I'm in the Chair".

On the football side he went on to say, "The past two seasons have been most disappointing and we finished both in 8th place with only 33 and 41 points respectively. Thanks to the present manager we're sitting this season with 38 points with 10 games still to go. He deserves a lot of credit on what he's achieved in a relatively short space of time".

Gordon Chisholm himself was then invited to join the meeting and received a rousing welcome. A lively question and answer forum followed which was enjoyed by all.

A record to be broken 19th February 2008
Following seven straight wins in a row Queens will be looking to equal a run of eight on the trot achieved in season 1969-70. Manager, Jackie Husband, had resigned in May 1968 and the Directors were running the team which makes it even more remarkable.

But as we head for Firhill on Saturday to meet Partick Thistle, one of only two clubs we've yet to beat in the league this season, Gordon Chisholm insists he'll be totally focussed on the future, not the past. Thistle are unbeaten in their last five home games, although four of those have been draws, but having already lost twice to them this season Queens' fans will be thinking, "We owe Mr McCall one".

Speaking to the 'Website' this afternoon the manager said, "Sure, we're on a great run at present and I'm delighted for the players, the fans and all at Palmerston. But we can't look back we must look forward! I'm not getting carried away and we'll be taking each match as it comes.

"We're off to Firhill on Saturday and I think it's another game we can win. On our last visit we lost 2-0. We played really well that day but couldn't get the ball in the net. At Palmerston we lost 2-1. Thistle were only in the game for about 20 minutes but scored twice. So, we certainly owe them one!

"When a team comes up against a former manager it always adds that wee bit extra spice to the occasion--and I'm sure it will be the same again. Ian McCall will be every bit as keen to beat us as we are to beat them. That's the nature of football!

"We want another win 'under our belts' to put pressure on St Johnstone and keep that tremendous winning streak going. The lads are all pulling for each other now and that's how it should be with goals coming from all different positions.

"Two of our smaller players, Paul Burns and Bob Harris, have been exceptional in recent matches and both have such an enormous appetite for the game. I'm glad I've got 'Burnsy' tied up on a two year extension to his contract and I'm also impressed with Bob Harris who's come in from Clyde, settled down, and is also doing very well indeed. A few weeks ago I saw Paul put in a tackle that actually made me shudder and Bob showed no fear for the big man Partaalu on Saturday depite him being about six inches taller.

"There's never two games the same in football! The St Johnstone saw two teams all out for a win and it was a terriffic match to watch. Stirling Albion came down last Saturday fighting for their lives and it was a totally different contest. I don't blame them one bit for 'sitting in' with nine men behind the ball. I took it as a mark of respect! It was up to us to break them down and we did.

"So, I can only ask our fans to get behind the team at Firhill and cheer us on to eight wins in a row".

QOS 16s v Clyde 16s
QOS played hosts to Clyde 16s on Sunday, the game being played at the Dumfries High School ground, in almost perfect conditions. QOS started very well and kept up a high tempo, their passing and movement excellent throughout the game and creating a number of chances. QOS opened the scoring in the first period, a Degnan corner to trialist McCafferty who played the ball into the feet of Reilly to control before smashing the ball home for the first goal of the game. The second period started in the same vein with QOS having the better of the play against a physical Clyde side. QOS increased their lead after McCann sent a great pass to McCafferty out wide, who in turn played an excellent pass across the box for Degnan to run onto and volley home. In the final minutes of the second period trialist Smillie went on a great solo run only for the visiting keeper to bring off a great save. The third period was less frantic with QOSıs more relaxed passing creating a number of chances and adding two more goals without reply. The first was a great strike from Reid after McCafferty and Jones linked up well to create the opening and then Reid put a good cross in to the box for Orsi to head over the keeper and into the net. Overall an excellent defensive performance with high work rate and creative show from the midfield and forwards.

Stranraer 15s v QOS 15s
QOS travelled to Stranraer on Sunday to play this derby match, the game being played in almost perfect conditions. The first 15 minutes both tems were evenly matched but slowly QOS began to play the better football, on what was a very uneven surface, with McHarrie and Hoad causing problems for the home side down the flanks. QOS took the lead when Thompson got his head to a McHarrie corner, which was blocked on the line, but Thompson following up rifled the ball home. With QOS keeper Rajovic bringing off a couple of good saves and the home keeper denying good efforts from Parker and Nicol, the period ended with no more scoring. In the second period QOS continued to press forward and twice Newlands went close with good drives. QOS increased their lead when Parker was brought down in the box and Thompson confidently doubled his and QOSıs score for the day. In the third period QOS were unlucky not to extend their lead, only the legs of the diving home keeper preventing Hoad from opening his account. With ten minutes to go, the home side reduced their deficit and as they drove forward looking for the equaliser the QOS defence, who had had a magnificent game, stood firm to ensure the points travelled back down the A75 to Dumfries.

Arbroath 14s v QOS 14s
For the second time this season QOS made the long journey up the east coast to take on a rejuvenated Arbroath side. Recent matches between these sides have been "tousled" affairs and this was no exception. The first period was evenly matched with both sides creating good chances. QOS, however, began to make inroads and it came as no surprise when they opened the scoring a minute from the end of the period when Handling latched on to a loose ball and shot low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. The second period was a similar story with QOS creating some chances but it was the home side who scorred to level the game before the end of the period. The third period saw QOS pressing for the lead. This came in the form of [ once again ] Handling rising above the home defence and skillfully heading in at the far post from a corner kick. Once again the home side brought the scores level. However, within two minutes QOS got their deserved winner when Hutton crashed a free kick directly into the Arbroath net from the edge of the box. Another good performance from this young team with a special mention for Gregor Anderson who was quite magnificent in the heart of the QOS defence and Robert Service who also had a fine match.

Four Queen of the South 'legends' came together for the first time in years on Saturday. Allan Ball, Jim Kerr, Lex Law and Billy Collings all played in the same team during the 1960s and were joined at Palmerston by Iain Mitchell and Ian White who played in the late 1970's.Those four stalwarts amassed an amazing total of 1713 appearances during their years of loyal service to the club and for Jim Kerr it was a memorable afternoon as he hadn't met his former team-mates for ages.

Allan Ball himself notched up a club record of 731 starts (819 if challenge matches and friendly games were included) and he is now an Honorary Director. Jim Kerr, who hails from Sanquhar, played 403 games, Lex Law 332 with Billy Collings turning out 247 times.

Iain Mitchell and Ian White also come from Sanquhar and were proud to accompany Jim down to the game. Apart from football 'Mitch's' other claim to fame was being Cornet in the burgh's annual Riding of the Marches. They must have brought us luck as we won 3-1.

Chairman, David Rae, welcomes Jim Kerr to the Palmerston Boardroom. Looking on are, left to right, Iain Mitchell, Ian White, Allan Ball, Billy Collings and Lex Law.

The internet has revolutionised the way we experience football, and social networking sites have changed the way many people keep in touch with friends, discover new interests and even organise their social lives.

The club are delighted to announce that we are relaunching www.qosfc.com in 2008, in the hope we can keep in touch with our fans in new, exciting and innovative ways. Colin Johnstone's sterling work will continue, but he will have a bit more free time as we join forces with local company Digitl in delivering the new-look site. Watch this space for updates!

Well known faces at Palmerston 18th February 2008
Six former Queens' favourites were at Palmerston on Saturday as guests of the club--Jim Kerr, Billy Collings, Allan Ball, Lex Law, Iain Mitchell and Ian White. And they all thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

Said elder statesman, Jim Kerr, "I hadn't set foot in Palmerston for years but, after Saturday's experience, I'm hoping to be down again. It was lovely being back and meeting up again with so many old friends and acquaintances. I'm indebted to Ian Turnbull for driving me there and back and although I was a wee bit worried about all the steps I managed OK. It was great to see Allan Ball, Billy Collings and Lex Law again and my two Sanquhar pals, 'Mitch' and 'Whitey' kept an eye on me. On the way home we stopped for a fish supper in the Palmerston Cafe just as we used to do when I was playing".

Lex Law was also overwhelmed by the reception and added, "Just walking through the car park on my way in I was besieged by autograph hunters and it's a long time since that last happened to me. We even had to sign four pieces of an old crossbar which was quite comical. Everyone in the Boardroom made us most welcome and I enjoyed chatting to so many old friends and colleagues--the afternoon passed like a flash! The invite was most thoughtful and we all enjoyed a great day out. I was talking to the Chairman and he told me I was welcome back anytime. I still stay in Carlisle which isn't a million miles away, so I might just take him up on his offer".

That old broken crossbar in question actually came from the honorable 'Captain Blackadder' who conjured it out of an old black bin-liner. He claims he got it from another well-known poster on the Mad Website 'Jardi'. No doubt it will be auctioned off at the 'New Bazaar' to raise funds for the club. I salute you Captain for your endeavour.

Match reaction 16th February 2008
Last month all of Dumfries was celebrating the birth of Robert Burns but today at Palmerston it was his namesake Paul Burns who was the "Star". He scored two superb goals which helped his side to their 7th win on the trot and 9th victory in 10 outings. The game didn't quite match up to last weeks epic but the result was the same 3-1, which kept our great winning run going and we're still hard on the heels of St Johnstone who staged a fightback to win today against leaders Hamilton. Gordon Chisholm was very pleased with the win but conceeded;

"Perhaps we didn't play our best and it wasn't such a good game as last week but we got the result we wanted. It's difficult when a team plays 4-5-1 with 9 men behind the ball at times but we were patient and got the three points. We scored early on but conceeded a bad goal to let them back into the game. Jim Thomson knows he should have dealt with it better but he's a true professional and put the mistake behind him and popped up in the 2nd half to score that crucial 3rd goal. Burnsy netted two great goals today to take our winning run to 7 in a row. We want to make Palmerston a place that other teams fear and that must be happening now.

Added Stirling boss, Allan Moore, "You can't come down to places like Palmerston and give goals away like we did today. We played a system to try and stop their two top strikers, Dobbie and O'Connor, scoring. We managed that but then Paul Burns got the goals. We wanted to keep a clean sheet following 2 wins in a row but Queens are 'flying' just now and it's 'never easy down here'.

Sponsors man of the match, Bobby Harris, said, "That was another massive win and the dressing room's buzzing again with all that Neil Diamond stuff from Ryan McCann. It's never easy playing a side that's fighting for survival but the manager's kept at us all week that although they are bottom of the table it wouldn't be easy. And it wasn't! As long as we keep winning I still think that we could catch St Johnstone. And that's our target now."

Paul Burns admitted with a big smile on his face, "That's the first time I've ever managed 2 goals for Queens. I would love to have grabbed a hat-trick but I'm not complaining for we still won. I scored early on and I think that was the better of my two goals. We then went through a bad patch and allowed them back into the game. However we settled after the interval and big Jim Thomson's goal settled it."

Well done James Baty 15th February 2008
Queen's youngest squad member gave a magnificent performance off the pitch last week when he visited Wigtown Primary School to promote fitness as part of their Health Week. Headteacher Stewart Anderson commented to Palmerston that James' was superb in delivering his message to the children and that his 'splendid input' was received well by pupils and staff alike.

James' commitment to training, playing, working around the ground and with the community is an absolute credit to him, as well as Queen of the South FC.

Big crowds at Palmerston 15th February 2008
Over the years there have been many memorable matches here at Palmerston which have attracted big crowds and with the quarter-final clash with Dundee fast approaching another bumper attendance is on the cards. But, just how many will it be?

Dundee have been allocated the East Stand which accommodates 2200 so we'd be looking for close on 4000 to take the total to the 6000 mark. So, can we do it?

Our record crowd was 26,552 for a Scottish Cup tie against Hearts on 23rd February, 1952. Hearts won 3-1 and gate receipts totalled £1718. Following that match the attendance was restricted to an all-ticket 23,000 and this was achieved only two years later on 27th February, 1954. Again the opposition was the Tynecastle side in the Scottish Cup, and again they won--this time 2-1.

We had to wait four years for our next all-ticket sell-out. Rangers were the visitors on 15th March, 1958, once more in the Cup, and the Glasgow giants triumphed 4-3 despite a fighting come-back by Queens. Shortly after that the restriction was cut further to 20,000 and the nearest we ever got to that was Rangers in the Cup quarter-finals on March 6th, 1976. We lost 5-0, the crowd was 18,700 and we've now been waiting 58 long years for that coveted semi-final spot.

In the past six years we've enjoyed five gates of over 5000. The list reads: Hibs, 24-2-07, 6198 (SC). Morton, 27-4-02, 6158 (League). Aberdeen, 25-1-03, 5716 (SC). Dundee United, 5-2-05, 5532 (SC). Gretna, 26-8-07, 5481 (League).

FOOTBALLERS LIVES 15th February 2008
In the spotlight today is Jamie MacDonald. 'Jambo' Jamie is a Bathgate boy and ever since he started football as a youngster he wanted to be a goalkeeper. He got his wish and is now playing international football at Under-21 level for Scotland and has just returned from a tournament in Portugal. He's enjoying it here at Palmerston and that tremendous first half save against Morton in the recent cup-tie at Cappielow helped Queens to a great win and a place in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup. Two of his most avid fans are his mum and dad, Jacquline and Gary, who travel all over the country to watch him play

Jamie gets ready to make a stop
What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
My first game for Queens against Partick Thistle at Palmerston. We were 4-0 up but they pulled back to 4-3 and I made a good save in the last minute to ensure a win. My most memorable game was my international debut for Scotland's Under 21's at Broadwood. We lost 2-0 to Germany but I played in the second half.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
That match against Gretna at Raydale last season. We won 3-0 but at a crucial moment earlier in the game I went for a harmless through ball. It bobbled and went under my foot but, thankfully it hit the post! To make matters worse Gretna had the incident on a documentary they were filming and the lads at Hearts got to see it and 'what a stick' I got.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
A difficult question as everyone's playing well just now. But I'd have to go for 'Dobbs' as he's got so much natural ability.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
Real Madrid, with Barcelona a close second. I love to watch Spanish football and to me Real Madrid are the best club side in the world.

What's your favourite film or video?
The Departed with Jack Nicholson and Leonardo di Caprio. I also like Identity.

Your favourite food and drink?
I love Chinese food. But my special favourite is a nice chicken curry. For drink, a refreshing cool bottle of Corona.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
A smart black Hugo Boss shirt. I feel good in it and always wear it when I'm going out anywhere special.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
An exotic island somewhere in the Caribbean.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
Probably Gemma Atkinson, the former Hollyoaks star.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
Yes, if I can get on it as my mum and dad always hog it. However it's really good with plenty of info and it's updated daily.

Next Friday our featured player is skipper, Jim Thomson.

Allan's up for the Challenge 14th February 2008
Stirling boss, Allan Moore, is expecting a torrid time when he comes down to Palmerston on Saturday. Having been a Queens' player himself he knows full well how hard it's going to be and says, "Queens have won six in a row and in this league that's quite an achievement. But we're coming off the back of a couple of good wins against Clyde and Partick Thistle which has given our confidence a bit of a boost.

"Our target now is catching Morton and Clyde, which isn't impossible, although I'm aware we've a fight on our hands to do so. On our last visit to Palmerston we snatched a draw with a late equaliser and I'd take the same result on Saturday and run.

"Queens beat us 3-1 up here in December and I think they've only lost twice since then. There was nothing in it that day until Stevie Tosh scored a 'wonder goal' and that strike proved the turning point. Queens have so many class players in their side now and 'Chis' deserves all the credit that's going.

"Jim Thomson is still so strong and dominant at the back, Tosh is the mastermind in midfield while Sean O'Conner and the lad Dobbie are knocking in goals for fun just now. I'm looking forward to seeing big Jim, Sean, Andy Aitken and John O'Neill again--I only hope big Sean has had a better haircut! As you'll gather, I was at Palmerston for a while myself and it's a good place to be with a tremendous support. We won the League Championship that season and I was pleased that John Connolly stuck me on for part of the game to savour the atmosphere. It was unforgettable!

"However, I'm manager of Stirling Albion now and my job is to come down to Dumfries and try and pick up points. Just like Queens, injuries have played a big part and even at the weekend we could be without two of our best players, Colin Cramb and Steven Bell. But we're now accustomed to coping with pressure and in recent weeks our results have improved and it's no more than we deserve.

"It's going to be a real 'dog-fight' from now until the end of the season and although we're facing the 'form team' on Saturday we don't intend to be 'lambs to the slaughter'. As I said, if we could get a draw it could be a point gained if Morton and Clyde should lose".

12 in a row 13th February 2008
Having won six in a row there's been much discussion this week as to our best ever winning run. To the best of our knowledge it was the run-in to season 1950-51 when we not only won promotion to the then 'A' Division but won the Championship as well. We had an amazing 12 wins on the trot followed by a draw and another victory to make it 13 wins in 14 games. We amassed a total of 45 points but bear in mind there were only two points for a win in those days.

Should this be wrong we'd be pleased to hear from any of our fans.

Alloa 16s v QOS 16s
QOS 16s travelled to Alloa on Sunday, the game being played on Recreation Park on their new astro-grass surface. QOS started well, with good movement and passing from the midfield and forwards with the two trialists, Smillie and McCafferty (his father had played for QOS in the early nineties), both settling quickly, showing good ability and awareness. QOS opened the scoring in the 15th minute following a good passing move from Dougan to Smillie to McCafferty whose well-weighted pass set up Reilly to put QOS ahead. Just before the first interval Alloa levelled the scores. QOS took the lead again in the second period, with a well-worked goal from Smillie, when Johnston controlled the ball well, wide right, before cutting the ball back for Smillie to smash home from 15 yards. QOS increased their lead when McCann with a clever free-kick across the face of the goal from the edge of the box, missing the onrushing forwards and defenders and finished up in the net. Once more Alloa reduced the deficit with a late goal in this period. In the third period a dubious penalty decision allowed the home side to draw level once more and a few late defensive errors allowed Alloa to score the final goal of the day late in the game. Overall a good creative performance which the coaches hope will be carried forward to this weekendıs home game against Clyde.

QOS 14s v Livingston 14s
QOS 14s never got to grips with is game in the first period and with the visitors also not at their best, a pretty scrappy first period saw only one effort on goal from QOS and the period ended goalless. Some positional changes and the usual substitutions saw a much improved QOS team in the second period, resulting in QOS opening the scoring, Handling taking the ball on his chest before rifling home the first goal of the game. Both Murray, who hit the bar, and Johnston went close for QOS and with QOS keeper Morrison making one excellent save, the second period ended without any more scoring. QOS took control in the third period and Kwok played in Dougan who neatly knocked the ball home, Johnston scored, his shot almost bursting the net, before Hooper broke clear, outran the visiting defence and scored the final goal of the game to complete a comfortable win for the QOS 14s.

On a winning run 12th February 2008
Queens are currently enjoying one of their best winning runs for many years. Saturday's 3-1 victory over St Johnstone made it six in a row with 18 goals scored--an average of three a game. The last time we managed that was nine years ago, in season 1998-99! Rowan Alexander's managerial contract had been terminated with George Rowe and Ken Eadie put in charge and the duo guided us to six wins on the trot to stave off relegation.

Saturday's win was even more remarkable taking into account that we've lost only one in nine--so well done lads.

Congratulations are also due to Gordon Chisholm who was presented with the Irn-Bru First Division 'Manager of the Month' award at Hampden on Thursday. But Gordon's not the kind of person to let something like that go to his head and he shunned any personal praise and dedicated the trophy to 'All at Palmerston'. Insisted the manager, "It's all down to team work and everyone pulling together for the sake of the club. It's not a one man show.

"We had another great result on Saturday as St Johnstone were on an unbeaten run of nine games. To beat them 3-1 was tremendous but that's history and we must now focus on Stirling Albion. They're coming off the back of two straight wins and will feel confident. Although they're still bottom of the table they'll have their sights set on catching Morton and Clyde now.

"We'll treat them with respect and prepare in the same way as we would if we were playing Hamilton or Dundee. They drew with us down here in early season, but we conceded a bad goal in the final minute which didn't please me. They played a 4-5-1 system, which is always difficult to break down, but our strikers are 'on fire' at the moment and have netted 11 between them in our last 6 games.

"However, both Sean and 'Dobbs' will be first to 'hold their hands up' and admit it's the excellent supply from their team-mates behind them that gives them the chance to score so many. Everyone is playing well just now, we've no failures and my biggest problem is who to leave out. But I can live with that!. We've got the winning habit now and don't intend taking the foot off the pedal".

On the Cup 'Chis' would only say, "I was at the Motherwell v Dundee game last night and Dundee were worthy of their win". Asked if he was happy at landing Dundee he added, "I asked for a home tie and I got what I asked for--I'd no particular preference. But that's all I'm saying about the Cup for three weeks.

"We have important league matches coming up against Stirling, Partick Thistle and Hamilton and we'll all be fully focussed on those. We'll take them one at a time, concetrate fully on the task in hand and be profession in our approach. If we win on Saturday we could move up level with St Johnstone--so we're looking upwards instead of downwards now".

Former players at Palmerston 11th February 2008
Two faces from the past were at Palmerston on Saturday to take in the St Johnstone game. Danny Wilson, who now stays in Newton Stewart, was in the squad of 1957-58 and still remembers well playing alongside the likes of Roy Henderson, Bobby Black, Jackie Oakes and Jim Patterson.

Also there was Ian White who hails from Sanquhar and made his first team debut against East Fife in March 1978. 'Whitey' is now proprietor of Nithvalley Embroidery and will feature in Colin Rutherford's article in Saturday's matchday programme.

Our own Music Man 11th February 2008
Music makes the world go round, so they say, and Ryan McCann is fast becoming the Music Man of Palmerston. Stevie Tosh apparently has quite a collection of music on his I-Pod and after our cup win at Morton last week it came blasting out from the Cappielow dressing room. And at Saturday's game it was heard loud and clear from the home dressing room again. However, 'Tosher' was quick to point the finger at someone else and insisted, "Not guilty this time--it's my I-Pod but it's Ryan that sticks all the Neil Diamond music on".

Joked one young player who wants to remain anonymous, "He's had Neil Diamond and other stuff blaring out--I think Ryan wants to be a disc jockey. Some of it's OK but some of it's a bit old-fashioned. However, if we keep on winning we're not complaining and I wonder what's he's got on offer should we make it through to the cup semi-finals".

Two goal Gareth 11th February 2008
Our Scottish Cup opponents, Linlithgow Rose, suffered another set-back at the weekend when they were knocked out of the Scottish Junior Cup by Cumnock. And it was a former Queens' player, Gareth Campbell, who did most of the damage as he scored two of the Ayrshire side's goals.

Match reaction 9th February 2008
And the Queens go marching on! That was the story today as our heroes marched to their 8th win in 9 matches and were deservedly cheered off the park by an appreciative crowd. They did survive a couple of scares with goalmouth scrambles but the only real fright came in the 77th minute when the visitors pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 after two great strikes by Jamie McQuilken and Sean O'Connor.

Shades of the early season clash came to mind but big Sean scored a brilliant second in the dying minutes to ensure a splendid victory. Beamed Gordon Chisholm, "Jim Thomson got the man of the match award but it could have gone to any of our players out there today. I thought they were all brilliant! There's no doubt about it the boys were up for it. After the high of the cup tie last week I wasn't sure what to expect but the spirit they showed was magnificent, they never took their eye off the ball, chased everything and had the hunger and desire to win. Apart from the starting eleven we also had a good strong bench which gave us options and that was pleasing as well. That's eight wins out of nine now and we've scored 21 goals in those games. I can't ask for more than that."

Two goal Sean O'Connor also had a big smile on his face as he emerged from the dressing room and said, "That's us three points behind the third place side and we're flying. There's a lot of confidence in the camp just now. Usually I;m the workhorse and provider and Dobb's is the scorer. But it was my turn to get my name on the scoresheet this afternoon."

Added Jamie McQuilken, "I was a Saints player for a while myself and it was nice to get one over on my old team mates who denied us a victory on their last visit to Palmerston. That's my first goal for Queens and I hope it's the first of many".

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes was fair and heaped praise on Queens, he admitted, "The better team won", and his words were echoed by his directors in the boardroom. Added the manager, "Queens thoroughly deserved to take the 3 points. They were the hungrier and more determined side while our performance was flat at times. Queens are on a great run and I thought they were terrific out there today."

FOOTBALLERS LIVES 8th February 2008
Today on 'Footballers Lives' we feature Neil MacFarlane who's been a 'rock' in the middle of the park those past few weeks.Born and raised in Dunoon, on the banks of the lovely Firth of Clyde, Neil is one of the few players who now actually stay in Dumfries. A man of many clubs, he started his career at Queen's Park before moving on to Kilmarnock, Airdrie, Hearts, Aberdeen and Gretna before joining us at Palmerston. Who can ever forget that 'wonder goal' Neil scored in our opening fixture against St Johnstone which should be well in the running for our 'Goal of the Year' award and we'd like nothing better for a repeat performance at Palmerston tomorrow.

Mac celebrates against St Johnstone on their last Palmerston visit
What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
My most exciting day was when I signed for Hearts. Two matches come to mind as the most memorable--playing for Hearts against Feyenoord in Europe and again for Hearts against Celtic in the semi final of the Scottish Cup at Hampden.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
I can't recall anything too bad offhand, so long may that continue.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
Stephen Dobbie. He's our leading scorer and his finishing is so clinical.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
Rangers, without a doubt. I supported them as a youngster and used to come across on the ferry to watch them play at Ibrox.

What's your favourite film or video?
Heat with Robert de Niro.

Your favourite food and drink?
Pasta, especially spaghetti bolognese. As for drink--any kind.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
I've got a lot of nice gear but nothing really extraordinary springs to mind.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Las Vegas. I enjoy a wee flutter from time to time.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
I'll pass on that one. The wife's listening.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
Every now and then. It's usually very good with plenty of information. Any criticism is usually quite fair.

Next Friday our featured player is Jamie McDonald.

Saints at Palmerston 7th February 2008
St Johnstone manager, Derek McInnis, is expecting a real battle when he brings his team to Palmerston on Saturday and admits, "Only yesterday I was sitting in my office studying form and I must say that you boys have been pretty impressive over the past two months. You've only lost one game in the last eight and that was at Hamliton where it's never easy. You're also scoring loads of goals so we know what we're coming down to.

"With our match being off I was fortunate to get down to Cappielow on Saturday to watch you play Morton in the Cup. You won and you won well! You were in control from the kick-off and looked comfortable on the ball and 2-0 didn't flatter you. You have a lot of good experienced players but I'm not going to single out any one individual.

"I know 'Chis' very well as I worked with him at Dundee United. He's a great guy and knows the game 'inside out'.

"I played in the match at Palmerston in early season and I've got to say--'we got out of jail' with those two goals in the closing minutes. It was real 'do-or-die' stuff but we did fight to the bitter end.

"We thought we'd won promotion last season and were all totally 'gutted' when Gretna grabbed that late goal to deny us our glory. We're sitting third just now and still have a chance but we need to get back up into that 'pack of three' at the top again.

"We're unbeaten at home and not too far behind Dundee but Queens aren't too far behind us. It's some league this First Division! We've only lost three games but we've had far too many draws and that's proved costly.

"However, I'm enjoying the challenge and learning all the time. St Johnstome are a great club to be with and I aim to do my best for them".

An experienced midfielder, Derek started his career in earnest at Morton but got his big break when he was signed by Rangers and featured prominently in the famous' 9-in-a-row' side at Ibrox. He then moved south of the border and became captain of West Brom for a spell; then it was on to Dundee United and Millwall prior to signing as a player for St Johnstone. He was made player-manager following Owen Coyle's departure to be boss at Burnley and he's doing a very good job up there at McDiarmid Park.

Team News 7th February 2008
Robert Campbell and our most recent signing from Celtic, Craig Reid, are added to the squad to face St Johnstone on Saturday. Both were 'cup-tied' for the game at Morton.

The manager is also hoping that Jim Lauchlan could be back in action soon. Says Gordon, "He's been through a second operation for his groin and is progressing well. He's in re-hab at present but could be back in contention within three weeks".

Youth Reports 6th February 2008
Queens' Park 16s v QOS 16s
QOS travelled to Glasgow on Sunday to play QP, one of the strongest squads in the league with the game being played on the new astroturf surface at Lesser Hampden. With four players missing due to injury and illness, the squad was made up with two trialists and two players from QOSıs younger age-groups. QOS put up a good performance in the first period but QP scored a last minute goal to lead at the first interval. The second and third periods found QOS struggling to get any momentum going creating very few chances with Reilly coming nearest, forcing the home keeper to make an excellent save to prevent a goal. With QP controlling the midfield it was no surprise they added goals in both periods without reply. Early in the game QOS players Solley (with a broken toe which will put him out for 6 or 8 weeks) and Johnston both sustained injuries, which didnıt help, and but hopefully the squad will be back to something near normal for Sundayıs difficult away fixture against Alloa.

Clyde 14s v QOS 14s
QOS 14`s long unbeaten run came to an end when they faced a strong Clyde team at Broadwood Stadium on Sunday. Clyde are a good side but QOS started well and took the game to the home side so it came as no surprise when Hooper shot QOS into the lead after15 minutes, skillfully dribbling past both central defenders on the edge of the box. In the second period the physical power of Clyde began to show and they levelled the match after 10 minutes. However QOS competed well despite losing four players through injury. In the third period Clyde took an early lead mainly through outmuscling the smaller QOS midfield. Nevertheless, five minutes from time QOS could have drawn level when Hooper [who had a good game] worked himself into the box but the Clyde keeper brought off a good save. To rub salt into the wound, the resultant clearance fell kindly for the large Clyde front man, who ran on to score his teamsı final goal of the day and the game.

QOS 13s v Morton 13s
QOS 13s kicked off against Morton at the KGV on Sunday, looking to emulate the heroics of the first team the previous day. Playing with the strong wind in the first period, they took an early lead when Neil headed home a Syme corner, but a fine individual goal soon brought Morton level. QOS regained the lead when Phillips scored his first goal for the club, firing into the top corner from the edge of the box, to complete the scoring for the first period. The second period saw Morton take full advantage of the conditions, and they pinned QOS into their own half for most of the period scoring three fine goals without reply to leave the home side chasing the game. One goal in particular, after fine wing play resulting in a back-post header, was worthy of any game at any level. The third period started with Davidson for QOS reducing the deficit, firing home from long range, but as QOS fought for the equalizer, it was Morton who scored from a well struck free-kick, and they added a further goal, again from a free-kick, to complete their deserved victory. For all the positives of the previous week, this was a very disappointing performance from the QOS side. Whilst several players played well, and showed the attitude and ability required to be successful at this level, several did not, and this has given the coaches much food for thought for the coming weeks.

Ryan our Man 6th February 2008
This time last year Ryan McCann was plying his trade in Dublin but returned home to Scotland on compassionate grounds. However, Bohemian's loss is our our gain and the bulk of Queens' fans will agee with that after his five star performance on Saturday. Said Ryan who signed only last month, "I loved my football in Dublin but all the travelling back and forward was getting me down. I come from a very close-knit family in Hamilton, my mum wasn't keeping too well, so that was the main reason I decided to return home".
Although it was John Stewart who stuck away that all-important second goal at Cappilow on Saturday, it was Ryan who did the 'spade work' with his piercing run from midfield and a fierce shot which the keeper could only parry. So it was a valuable 'assist'.

Since he first came into the side we've won four out of four, but the ex-Celt was reluctant to take too much credit and added, "The team were doing pretty well before I was introduced to the line-up but I'd like to think I've done my bit. I think big Jim Thomson is an inspirational skipper while Andy Aitken and Bobby Harris are also so strong at the back, but I'd describe us as a unit of 11 good individuals who blend well together. Our system appears to work well and there's no 'prima donnas'.

"We've got the basis of a really good side with a equal mix of youth and experience and see no reason why we can't finish in the top half of the table. There's not much between the bottom half of the Premier league and the top half of the First Division! Just look at some of the big clubs who have been relegated and are now struggling to get back up again--Dundee, Livingston, Dunfermline to name a few.

"When I was at St Johnstone our manager, Owen Coyle, always maintained what I've just stated and he was 'spot-on'. This is the hardest league I've ever played in!
"I'm really enjoy it at Palmerston even though I'm not in my favourite position in the middle of the park. The manager's great, the facilities are great and the fans are superb as well.

"One of my best mates in football is Dougie Imrie who moved to ICT only last week. I was with him at Clyde and I know he's temperamental and gets a 'lot of stick' at times. He isn't everybody's favourite but I rate him highly as a player. I know him well and understand him and I think he'll do well in the Premier League.

"My ambition now is to earn a regular place in the Queen of the South team, have a good run in the cup and finish in the top three in the league".

Testimonial Match at Annan 5th February 2008
A galaxy of former Palmerston favourites will be decending on Annan in July to take part in a Testimonial Match for Andy Aitken. The popular Queen of the South defender is celebrating 10 years at the club and the theme for the year is 'The Annan Lad'. The game between a Queens' All Star XI and Annan Athletic themselves will be played at Galabank on Friday 11th July, kicking off at 7.30 pm.

In the squad so far are Colin Scott, David Mathieson, Paddy Atkinson, Derek Anderson, Derek Townsley, George Rowe, Derek Allan, Steve Bowey, Des McKeown, Craig Flannigan, Brian McLauchlin, Stevie Mallan, Tommy Bryce, Warren Hawke and, of course, Andy Aitken himself. Coaches will be Iain Scott and Warren Pearson with Kenny Crichton acting as physio for the day.

Other forthcoming dates on the calendar are a Speakers' Dinner to be held at the Crichton's Easterbrook Hall on Saturday, 12th April and a Golf Tournament to be played at the Dumfries and Galloway club on Sunday, 31st August.

The Race Night in the Townhouse Hotel this coming Saturday has proved a big success and is a 'sell out'. Most of the Queens' players will be attending after their game against St Johnstone at Palmerston.

Dougie McBain dies 4th February 2008
It is with regret that we record the death of a big Queens' favourite of yesteryear, Dougie McBain. He joined Queens from Queen's Park in 1948 and was with us for over seven years. He was a member of that great side of the late '40s and '50s which will still roll of the tongue of so many. It leaves only Bobby Black, Jimmy McGill and Jim Patterson still with us.

Dougie played in the Queens' team which took Rangers to a replay in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup back in April, 1950. He ran the Post Office and Newsagents business in Locharbriggs for many years before moving to Edinburgh where he stayed until his death on Friday. He was 83 and his funeral will take place on Wednesday.

Our condolencies go out to his wife and family from Queen of the South F.C. A minute's silence will be held prior to Saturday's game against St Johnstone.

I got what I wanted says 'Chis' 4th February 2008
"I got all that I asked for". That was Gordon Chisholm's first reaction when he first heard the Scottish Cup draw yesterday. Added the manager, "It's a home game against opposition we're capable of beating and I've no particular preference who we play".

"Getting the tie at Palmerston was what pleased me most! Motherwell are a Premier League side and a good one at that but we know Dundee's capabilities better as we've played them three times already this season. Motherwell will start favourites but that means nothing in the cup. Just look at last week--everyone, including myself, expected Gretna to beat Morton but the underdogs go and win 3-0.

"But we had our moment of glory at Cappielow on Saturday and I've got to say that our fans were again superb. However, we've now got to forget the cup fever for a couple of weeks and get our feet on the ground again. It was back to hard training this morning and we are now fully focussed on the league games coming up against St Johnstone and Stirling Albion. And the cup won't even be mentioned until then.

"We're not too far behind St Johnstone in the table and I think we could catch them, but we've still to watch our own backs as the teams below are hard on our tails and one bad result could see them jump above us. It's as tight as that! We must all stay positive and all pull together.

"We drew with St Johnstone on the first day of the season but you don't need me to tell you it was a match we should have won after leading 3-1 with only minutes remaining. A game lasts for 90 minutes and we must always remember that".

Looking back to Saturday the manager reflected, "That's three wins in a row on our travels and that's great considering our away form in early season. We played some really good stuff up at Morton and that was our third win at Cappielow this season. The goals came at the right times but that save Jamie McDonald made from Peter Weatherson just before the break proved crucial.

"We came out in the second half and big Sean scored with a brilliant header within minutes. They came at us after that but the boys at the back were brilliant and big Jim Thomson was again immense. However at 1-0 up nothing's certain, but Ryan McCann, who had an excellent game, made a great run forward and although the keeper saved his shot John Stewart was right on the spot to knock the rebound home.

"Our team spirit is tremendous at present, with everyone playing for each other, and that's what football's all about".

Scottish Cup draw 3rd February 2008
Queens will meet either Motherwell or Dundee in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup. The draw was made at Easter Road this afternoon and the games will take place on Saturday, 8th March.

Commenting on the draw Chairman, Davie Rae said, "I always said a wanted a home game and preferrably not one of the 'Old Firm' at this stage. So I've got my wish! With home advantage we're capable of beating either of those sides and gain a semi-final place for only the second time in our club's history.

"We ran Motherwell close four years ago and only lost 3-2 after being down 3-0 at half-time. In the second half Sean O'Connor scored two great goals and at the end their manager, Terry Butcher, told me he was 'Glad to hear the final whistle'. As for Dundee, we've beaten them twice in the last couple of months and knocked them out of the Cup last season. So they won't be too keen to come down here".

Looking back to yesterday the Chairman added, That's three times we've beat Morton on their own ground this season and we've never even conceded a goal. We've never lost there in our last six visits--it's certainly been a lucky park for us.

"I felt our win was well deserved! All our players were heroes, none moreso than our skipper, J.T. For a 36-year-old he was outstanding. We had over 700 supporters in the crowd of 3506 and I can't praise you enough for the support which was greatly appreciated".

Ties to be played the weekend of March 8 2008
Match reaction 2nd February 2008
Morton must be sick of the sight of Queens at Cappielow this season. Twice in the league we have beaten them without conceding a goal and this afternoon in the Scottish Cup goals from Sean O'Connor and John Stewart helped Queens to a 2-0 victory.

Queens dominated the early stages but in the latter part of the first half Morton got on top and Jamie MacDonald had to pull off a crucial one-handed save to deny former Palmerston favourite Peter Weatherson a headed goal.

Only two minutes of the second half had elapsed when Sean O'Connor headed Queens' opener from a Bob Harris corner but the big man was injured shortly afterwards in an aerial collision and had to be replaced by John O'Neill. Morton piled on the pressure but the Queens rear guard held firm and only four minutes from the end the keeper could only block a fierce shot from Ryan McCann and John Stewart was on hand to knock in the rebound for his first goal for his new club. Manager Gordon Chisholm was naturally delighted with the win and confessed;

"It's all about the team performance and them all working for each other. There is a great team spirit in the camp and, unlike the early part of the season, we now have most of the players available for selection. Naturally I'd like a home tie in the next round but I wouldn't mind missing out on anyone from our own league as we play them so many times each season as it is. The lads are really enjoying the win tonight, they have Neil Diamond blasting out in the dressing room to celebrate."

John Stewart too was delighted, "It was great to get that goal as it just made the margin a wee bit wider and more difficult for Morton to come back from."

A little bit concussed but still smiling was the battered and bruised Sean O'Connor, "When I went up for the header I think there were at least three other heads all clashing. I came off worst and think I'll need three stitches just under my eye."

Morton boss Jim McInally was disappointed when he faced the press, "Queens started well but we came back onto our game in the second half. After Queens scored we put them under a lot of pressure and I felt that we could have equalised, alas it was not to be."

FOOTBALLERS LIVES 1st February 2008
Next up is one of our younger players, 23-year-old Paul Burns--winner of the 'Man of the Match' award against Clyde a month ago and also our top player at Dundee last week. 'Burnsy' has already netted four times since August with goals against Clyde, Dundee (two) and in the Scottish Cup at Peterhead, but his aim is to double that tally before the season ends.

Burnsy digs in as usual
What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
My debut for Queen of the South against Arbroath at Palmerston as I was still at the school then. My biggest match was probably back in October 2003 when we beat ICT 3-2 at home to go top of the First Division, but I must say I enjoyed Saturday's 3-2 win at Dundee almost as much.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
In a home game against Hamilton. I completely mis-kicked and it cost us a goal. The manager, Iain Scott, 'subbed' me at half-time which wasn't surprising.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
It has to be 'Dobbs' for all the goals he scores. His 'hat-trick' at Morton a couple of weeks ago was outstanding.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
Manchester United. I just love they way they play football. They're so exciting to watch--especially in Europe. It would be a dream to line-up with the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Giggs

What's your favourite film or video?
Gladiator with Russell Crowe. It's barbaric and bloodthirsty but very good. I've watched it dozens of times on both DVD and video.

Your favourite food and drink?
I enjoy a nice lasagne. As for drink, I'd go for a lovely cool bottle of Corona beer.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
A Hugo Boss shirt. It's casual but smart and I feel real 'cool' in it.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Las Vegas. I'd make for the casino, and have a bet or two. It would be great to 'break the bank' and come home a millionaire.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
From time to time. Particularly if I know myself or one of my team-mates are featured. I enjoy it!

Next Friday our featured player is Neil McFarlane.

COUNTDOWN TO THE CUP 1st February 2008
With less than 24 hours left before we kick-off against Morton at Cappielow, Davie Rae reflects on some of his past memories of the Cup. Said the Chairman, "There's always been something extra special about the Scottish Cup--the big one! It's now been going strong since 1873 when Queen's Park beat Clydesdale 2-0 in the first ever final at the old Hampden Park. Believe it or not, the crowd that day was only 2500. It's part of our history and that's how I feel a bit disheartened that this famous competition wasn't able to attract a sponsor this season.

"Queen of the South have had some memorable battles in the Scottish Cup, but only once have we made it to the semi-finals. I was only a teenager at the time but I recall everyone talking about going up to Hampden to see us take on the mighty Glasgow Rangers. We actually led 1-0 for most of the game with Jackie Brown scoring but a defensive mix-up between Dougie Sharpe and our keeper, Roy Henderson, led to their equaliser. In the replay we lost 3-0.

"If we could beat Morton tomorrow we would be through to the quarter-finals, we went out last season against Hibs at Palmerston despite a brave fight losing 2-1.

"In the league we've already beaten Morton twice at Cappielow this season. 1-0 and only a couple of weeks ago 3-0! But this is a cup-tie and a 'different kettle of fish'. They played really well to defeat Gretna 3-0 in their replay on Monday night and their star man was our ex-player, Peter Weatherson who scored two of their goals. I was not Chairman at the time Peter left, but personally I felt it was a mistake to let him go.

"Morton are a good side and knocked three past us at Palmerston earlier this season. They defended well against Gretna when under a bit of pressure early on, but once they got ahead their two wing men, who were so fast, caused no end of trouble.

"Obviously I would have preferred to have been playing Gretna at home tomorrow, but there's nothing at all we can do about it. Morton won, and won well, and the result was totally out of our hands.

"Stephen Dobbie scored a 'hat-trick at Cappielow a fortnight ago so he'll be a marked man tomorrow. However, I'm quietly confident we can get a result as we've had a tremendous run of results since mid December. I'm expecting about 500 Queens fans at Greenock for the game and I'm hoping they'll give us the same support as they did on that last visit when I felt it only fair to go down and applaud them.

"When the cup match with Linlithgow Rose was under threat our 'Action Group' turned up on the Friday night to help the ground staff lay the protective covers, and they were back again early the following morning to lift them again, and that ensured the game went ahead as planned. That's what I call dedication!

"In the two previous rounds we beat Peterhead (away) 5-0 and Linlithgow (home) 4-0. So, if we can keep another 'clean sheet' at Cappielow tomorrow and grab a couple if goals into the bargain, the Chairman will be a very happy man".

COUNTDOWN TO THE CUP 31st January 2008
As the build-up to Saturday's cup-tie gathers momentum the top two strikers involved, our own Stephen Dobbie and Morton's Peter Weatherson, talk about the match.

First up was Stephen Dobbie who was our 'hat-trick' hero on our recent visit to Cappielow. Said 'Dobbs', We've enjoyed a great run of form in recent weeks and we're hoping to take it into Saturday's match. The boys are playing well and we're all up for the challenge of the cup. We're after a quarter-final place, but we know full well it's going to be a hard one.

"Morton beat Gretna 3-0 on Monday night which was no mean feat and I'm sure they'll be out to avenge that 3-0 beating we gave them two weeks ago. As I was the one who got the 'hat-trick' I'll be a marked man but I'll treat it as a compliment. It's only the second 'hat-trick' of my professional career, the earlier one coming when I was at Hibs".

Of the three goals at Cappielow what one did you rate the best we asked. "They were all different" he explained. "But if I had to single out just one I'd go for the second. It was from long range and caught the keeper completely off guard.

"I've been told what the Morton manager Jim McInally said about kidnapping me from the bench and locking me in a cupboard till after the final whistle. Again I'll take it as a compliment, but all I can say is he might never get the chance as I hope I'm on from the start. But football's a team game and the manager's always got difficult decisions to make. He's on a 'hiding to nothing' at times, especially now he's got almost a full squad back. Everyone wants to play but he can only put 11 bodies on the park".

Peter Weatherson will be adamant that 3-0 league defeat is behind them and Saturday will be a totally different game. That will be all in the past and he and his team mates will be looking to the future now. They'll still be 'on a high' following that impressive 3-0 win over Gretna on Monday night. Not many gave them much of a chance against the Premier League side but, after they scored that opening goal, there was only going to be one winner.

Palmerston appears to be a lucky ground for Peter. In his three year spell with Queens the 'hit-man' knocked in close on 50 goals for us--and some memorable ones at that. The Queens' fans in the 1441 crowd were all for him on Monday but he knows it will all be so different come Saturday. Earlier this season the likeable Geordie insisted, "I'll never say a bad word against the Queens' supporters as they've always treated me fairly and with respect. They gave me some pelters with my Rab C. Nesbitt bandage the last time I was down but out of mutual respect I didn't over celebrate when I scored".

The mood in the Morton camp must be one of confidence after that Gretna result and with home advantage they'll be keen to win for the sake of their fans. And a place in the quarter-finals is the best reward they could give them. They'll be out in force with the whole of Greenock behind them but that shouldn't worry the Queens' players too much. We've already beaten them twice at Cappielow this season and they've yet to score against us. So that thought might just be prying on their minds. They'll be a tremendous atmosphere so let's all hope for a memorable cup-tie.

Team news 31st January 2008
With the exception of recent signing Robert Campbell, who is 'cup-tied', Queens will have the same squad as last week for the cup-tie against Morton on Saturday. With snow forecast all fans are advised to check before setting off for Greenock.

COUNTDOWN TO THE CUP 30th January 2008
Gordon Chisholm is both excited and upbeat for Saturday's cup tie against Morton and insists Cappielow will be buzzing. "The atmosphere will be electric" added the manager "And they'll be a big partisan crowd. Cappielow always reminds me of Falkirk's old Stadium, Brockville. The fans are right up close and you can almost touch them. It can be quite intimidating but great for Scottish Cup football.

"If I was totally honest I wanted Gretna at Palmerston for the sake of our fans and the financial rewards for the club itself. It would have given our supporters the home tie they were craving for and the team home advantage. However, it was not to be! But, on hindsight, a tie at Morton could work out just as exciting and almost as rewarding if all the stories I'm hearing of a 4000 plus gate are true.

"I watched the match on Monday night and I've got to say the better team won. All credit to Morton who were well worth their victory--they were the hungrier side in the second half and displayed a tremendous will to win.

"We've had a good run of form ourselves over the last five or six weeks and we intend to keep the momentum going. We've already won twice at Cappielow this season, but this is the Scottish Cup we're talking about, so we're taking nothing for granted. No two games are the same and we'll plan our strategy accordingly. A place in the quarter-finals is at stake and we'll be up for it.

"We went out to Hibs last year, so we aim to go better this time around. Peter Weatherson is their danger man and seems to enjoy scoring goals against us, but we'll be treating the whole Morton team with the greatest respect. Gretna didn't expect to lose on Monday night and Hamilton must have been shocked to be knocked out at Brechin so we must stay focussed on the task in hand. It will give us a welcome break away from the rigours of the league but we must be up for the challenge if we are to succeed".

Youth Reports 29th January 2008
QOS 16s v St Johnstone 16s
QOS 16s entertained St Johnstone 16s on Sunday, and despite the recent heavy rain, the game going ahead at the David Keswick Centre. QOS started well, creating a number of early chances but allowed Saints into the game, losing two goals in quick succession. Undaunted QOS fought back and Degnan set up Reilly, whose excellent first touch left his marker stranded, before smashing home a great strike. Early in the second period QOS drew level. A long throw-in from West into the box wasnıt cleared properly and Reilly pounced to knock the ball home from six yards. But once more, some lapses in concentration allowed Saints to re-instate their two-goal advantage before the end of the second period. In the third period QOS clawed their way back into the game when trialist Burgess, who had a good game, reduced the deficit with a fine strike and a goalmouth scramble allowed Liam Johnstone to score a deserved equaliser. Overall an inconsistent performance from QOS who never-the-less showed great character to come back twice from a two-goal deficit.

Clyde 15s v QOS 15s
QOS 15's resumed their league fixtures with an away match on the astroturf at Broadwood Stadium . On a blustery day QOS got off to a reasonable start and Abdul quickly troubled the opposition defence going close on a couple of occasions. Against the run of play Clyde took an early lead, however, almost immediately QOS equalised through Middlemiss. After a period of sustained pressure QOS scored, an excellent 30 yard free-kick from Thomson giving the home keeper no chamce. In the second period Clyde took advantage of the conditions and scored twice in quick succession to take the lead. QOS continued to make some excellent chances but unfortunately could not convert them into goals despite the efforts of Middlemiss and Abdul. In the third period QOS continued to press but Clyde added two more without reply and to complete a disappointing day, the referee failed to give a handball decision against Clyde, despite both sets of players stopping, and Clyde scored their final goal of the day. Hopefully the team will return to their usual high standard of performance in their home fixture against Livingston FC next Sunday.

QOS 14s v Stirling Albion 14s
Due to the weather conditions this game was switched to the KGV park on Sunday morning. Stirling settled to the game quicker but it was QOS who opened the scoring, Dougan beating the Albion keeper with a fine low shot just inside the post. Despite QOS creating a few more chances, the scoreline remained unchanged at the first interval. Early in the second period QOS doubled their advantage, Johnstone knocking the ball home. Stirling came back into the game but the QOS defence stood firm and the second period saw no more goals. The third period saw both teams showing signs of tired legs but QOS added two more goals, Johnstone and Dougan both finding the net and with Stirling unable to break down the QOS defence the first game back after the winter break saw QOS secure a comfortable win.

Queensı Park 13s v QOS 13s
QOS 13s resumed their season with a difficult trip to Lesser Hampden to face a strong Queens Park squad. The first period was very even, with both teams playing good football, but as the period drew to a close, two unfortunate own-goals gave the home side the advantage. The second period was again very keenly contested, and only a single goal was scored, again going to the home side after indecision in the QOS defence allowed the QP striker an easy finish from close range. As the QOS team tired in the third period, Queens Park went on to score a further three goals, and QOSıs day was summed up in the last minute when they missed the opportunity to get on the scoresheet, with a penalty being squandered. Whilst the scoreline suggests an easy victory for Queens Park, this was anything but. For the first two periods, both teams made and missed chances, with good goalkeeping and defending being the order of the day. The two own-goals were both unfortunate, but had a large bearing on the outcome of the match, and it was only in the final period that there appeared to be any gulf between the sides. The QOS coaches are of the opinion that, despite the scoreline, there is great cause for optimism on the back of the overall performance.

John Paterson
COUNTDOWN TO THE CUP 29th January 2008
As the Morton team coach slid quietly out of the Palmerston car park last night their gaffer, Jim McInally, could well have been harbouring a secret wish that Saturday's fifth-round Scottish Cup tie was at Dumfries rather than Cappielow. After a great second-half performance he had just witnessed his troops beat Premier League Gretna 3-0 with ex-Queens' favourite, Peter Weatherson, the destroyer-in-chief and the bandaged Stewart Greacen (another former player) the 'Man of the Match'.

Earlier in the season Weatherson had been their top man down here when the 'Ton' beat us 3-1, so no wonder the manager must have been thinking that 'Palmerston's the place to play'. Also on his mind is the fact that we've already beaten Morton twice on their own patch this season--1-0 back in September and 3-0 just recently.

Speaking to the 'Website' this morning he said, "On the way home last night that fact actually crossed my mind" then joked, "We'll just have to hold them to a draw on Saturday and beat them in the replay at Palmerston.

"Seriously though, to be fair to our supporters, they deserve the game at Cappielow. When the match was switched from Motherwell to Dumfries it meant a long 200 mile round trip for them while Gretna had the luxury of just a quick hop up the road. But we realised that it had to be! They also had their game postponed on Saturday while we were faced with two hard matches in three days. So, it speaks volumns for our lads that they performed so well, did us proud and, as a reward, they all have the day off today.

"We had a 'let-off' when Deuchar hit the post but once we scored the confidence just grew and when Peter Weatherston grabbed two quick goals I knew we were through. We rested Peter on Saturday but he's not a player you can keep out for long. He's a natural finisher as all Queens' fans know, and he proved that once again last night.

"At half time I told the lads that we had to stop their aerial bombardment and Stewart Greacen had a big hand in that. Keep the ball on the deck I stressed, and we can 'pick them off', and I'm pleased to say it worked.

"Saturday is a massive day for both clubs with a place in the quarter-finals awaiting the winners. Queens always bring a big support to Cappielow and with the excitement building up I'm expecting between four and five thousand here. I know Queens would have preferred Gretna at Palmerston but with the shared gate I don't think they'll lose out too much.

"If 'Chis' has that man Dobbie on the bench again I might just kidnap him and lock him in a cupboard until after the game. He came on as sub and destroyed us in the second half in our last meeting but I've got to admit that his 'hat-trick' was one of the best I've seen at Cappielow for many a long year.

"But, apart from Stephen Dobbie, Queens have class and experience all over the park and are the form side in our league at present. Big Jim Thomson was a Colossus in defence, Stevie Tosh completely controlled the midfield and I'm a great admirer of Sean O'Connor. He's so strong and powerful and the lad doesn't get the credit he deserves".
