A superb victory and a massive three points for Queens at Broadwood this afternoon. Against a team we'd never managed to score against in three previous league fixtures this season a penalty from hitman Stephen Dobbie earned us a 1-0 victory and sent the travelling support of 239 home happy despite Clyde hitting the woodwork thrice. It was Dobbie himself who was pulled down for the penalty but he picked himself up, dusted himself down and calmly slotted the ball past 'keeper Dave Hutton. That's 11 goals in 14 starts for the striker who will be 'King of the South' and the toast of Dumfries tonight. It also adds up to six clean sheets in seven matches which will make the manager a happy man indeed. We now jump 7 points clear of Airdrie United who play Dundee tomorrow, 6 points ahead of Ross County and move to within a single point of Partick Thistle who lie 7th in the table and makes the 'Great Escape No. 2' even more feasible.

At the final whistle a delighted Ian McCall stated, "That was a big win for us! We defended well, and Jamie MacDonald pulled off a couple of good saves when required and I felt we thoroughly deserved the 3 points. Clyde have a lot of young, fit boys in their ranks and they'd been saying during the week how they should have won at Palmerston on Sunday. That fired our players up and it turned out a really good game - a big improvement on last week. I'm told that there were 239 Queens fans at Broadwood this afternoon. To me it sounded like 600 as the home support was seldom heard". But the manager was still cautious and warned, "It's another step forward but we're not safe yet."

Former stars return. 30th March 2007
Two ex-Queens men aim to be at the Hamilton Accies game as guests of the club.

Alex 'Sandy' Selkirk - who starred in goal for Queens in season 1956/57 when Roy Henderson was sidelined with a bad injury - will be at Palmerston on Tuesday. Having been seriously injured at the end of his first year at the club, sadly Sandy only played one season at senior level. He went on to be first choice keeper with Glenafton, playing for several more years in a very successful junior side, before retiring from the game.

Although born in Stonehouse, Sandy's family originate from Largo in Fife and he is said to be a descendant of Robinson Crusoe [aka Alexander Selkirk] who came from the same area.

Speaking from his Hampshire home, Sandy said: "I always look out for Queens results and keep a special eye on how the keeper is doing. I note that young Jamie McDonald is doing well and that performances overall have been improving. Hopefully the team will get three points on Tuesday and stay on course to remain in the First Division."

He attended Larkhall Academy with former Queens man Willie McLean and is looking forward to visiting Palmerston again. His last visit was in April 2005 when he attended the match versus Raith Rovers.

Accompanying Sandy at the game will be his old schoolpal Willie McLean. Willie had the distinction of both playing for and managing Queens joining from Alloa along with Neil Martin in 1961. Signed by George Farm, Willie won promotion to the First Division in his first season with the club when Queens finished runners-up to Clyde.

He said recently, “We were a good team. Ernie Hannigan was outstanding as was Neil Martin. John Murphy was a terrier, a great tackler in left midfield and we had a good centre-half in John Rugg. Allan Ball and Iain McChesney were also breaking into the team at that time, both were to become great servants. Winning promotion in this first season was a highlight of my career.”

After a distinguished playing career, he came back to manage Queens in 1973. He counts Ian Reid and Billy McLaren as two of his most significant signings for the club - and most Queens fans would agree with that!

Part of the McLean football dynasty - brothers Jim and Tommy certainly made their mark on the game - Willie also managed Motherwell, Raith Rovers, Ayr United and Pezoporikos of Cyprus where he teamed up with Mark Shanks - also well known to the Queens faithful.

Both Sandy and Willie are looking forward to meeting up again with Allan Ball.

Midfielder Jamie Adams will miss Saturday's game against Clyde at Broadwood with a groin strain. Eric Paton has a similar injury and is listed 50/50. Stevie Tosh however is included in the squad.
But it's bad news for 'keeper Colin Scott as Ian McCall explained, "His latest operation on his knee hasn't been a success and unfortunately 'scooter' has been told it's now time to hang up his boots. He's been a great servant for the club over the past six and a half years making 134 first team appearances but he'll be coming down to Palmerston for the final game of the season to receive a presentation from the Board of Directors."

Safe hands.

New Director for Queens 28th March 2007
Colin Rutherford has been appointed as a Director of Queen of the South F.C. by the Chairman and Board of Directors. He has been working tirelessly behind the scenes at Palmerston for over three years and has used his expertise to assist with some important projects.

Colin can rightly be termed a 'Doonhamer' as he was born in Dumfries in 1955--at Cresswell Maternity Hospital--like so many of us. For the last 22 years he has served with various financial institutions in both the public and private sectors which included vocations in the U.S.A., Germany and Saudi Arabia. His last post before retiring was as a Director and Head of Operations at Morgan and Stanley Bank where he worked for the past seven years. He is also a Director of the Scottish Enterprise in Lanarkshire and now resides in Dullatur with his wife, Anne.

He still vividly remembers his first visit to Palmerston and says, "It was a 'friendy' at home to Shrewsbury in August, 1968. My dad took me and we lost 2-0". Nevertheless, that result didn't deter young Colin's enthusiasm for Queen of the South, and he has supported them now for almost 40 years.

Two of his most memorable encounters were recent matches--both of them away from home. He recalls, "The first has to be the day we beat St Johnstone 3-1 at Perth at the start of season 2004-05. 'Scotty' had just taken over as manager a few months earlier and John Connolly had moved to McDiarmid Park as the boss there, so it was a big win for us.

"The other was at the end of last season when we drew 1-1 up at Brechin to ensure our First Division status. It was deemed by the fans as 'The Great Escape' and rightly so. I only hope we can do the same this season.

"I deem it a great honour to be asked to become a Director of Queen of the South and I will do my utmost to serve them to the best of my abilities".

Skipper on the 'School Run' again 28th March 2007
Jim Thomson was once more off on his travels on the 'Active Schools Programme' this week. Today he was at both Closeburn and Dunscore Primaries with Colvend and Duncow scheduled in the next few days. Tomorrow he is also to make presentations at St Joseph's College and Lockerbie Academy.

Over the past few weeks St Ninians, Lochside, Lincluden and Palnackie have all had the benefits of our skipper's professional knowledge and since the pilot scheme commenced in the late autumn, Jim has now visited over 60 schools in the region.

But he admits, "I'm thoroughly enjoying it! I get asked all sorts of questions and some of them are quite comical. A lot of the kids tell me that their dads play football and relate in great details of their parent's exploits on the pitch. But practically everywhere I go they all tell me they want to play for Queen of the South when they grow up which is good. So what a massive squad Queens will have to choose from in years to come".

Queens win in Challenge Cup 27th March 2007
Queens won through to the next round of the South of Scotland Challenge Cup at Palmerston tonight despite a brave fightback from Annan Athletic. They now meet Stranraer away.

We went ahead after 35 minutes, Graham Weir setting up Andrew Barrowman for the opener, and on the hour mark made it 2-0, Weir bundling the ball home following a corner.

However, Annan were quick to respond. A mix-up in the home defence led to an own goal and only minutes later veteran striker, Simon Tucker, equalised with a shot from the edge of the six-yard box.

But Annan's joy was short lived when Scott Robertson volleyed home the 'goal of the game' to regain the lead for Queens but worse was to follow. They were reduced to ten men when Craig Allen was stretchered off with a bad knee injury and with five minutes to go Weir broke clear to crack home goal number four.

The Queens' line-up was: Hyslop, Mitchell, Henderson, Aitken (Leighfield), Whorlow, Muirhead (McGinley), Burns, Robertson, Walker (McLaughlin), Weir and Barrowman.

It's Clyde again on Saturday 27th March 2007
Following the goal-less draw with Clyde at Palmerston at the weekend Ian McCall insists, "We've got it all to do again at Broadwood this Saturday. I thought the wind on Sunday spoiled it from the spectators point if view, as it was so difficult to play good football. It was the two form teams in the league against each other so a draw was always on the cards.

"Clyde are strong at the back and have the best defensive record in the division with only 31 goals conceded in 30 games, so I knew it would be difficult to break them down. They were on top in the first half and I've got to admit they played well throughout. However, we had the better chances after the interval and, had we nicked a goal, I'm sure it would have been the winner. But that's eight games unbeaten in the league, so I can't complain.

"Clyde have home advantage this time and Broadwood is a big park to play on. In early season it would have been worried me, but I don't think many teams will 'run the legs off' Neil Scally and Jamie Adams.

"It's now tighter than ever at the foot of the table with only eight points separating five teams. Livingston and Partick Thistle have both been 'sucked into the mix' and I said that could well happen a week or two ago. In past seasons 40 points would more or less guarantee 'safety', but I reckon 42 or 43 could be required this time. Apart from Ross County we've still to play the other three bottom clubs and two of those are at home--so that's in our favour.

"I was asked earlier this week if I'd take three home wins and three away draws from our six remaining matches. Yes, would probably be the answer, but all along I've stressed that we're taking one game at a time and that's how it's always going to be".

Match reaction 25th March 2007
For the second home game in a row a blustery wind ensured it was never going to be a classic and that's the way it turned out. It was Queens' first goalless draw of the season but against our 'bogey' team, Clyde, it wasn't a disaster and extended our run of league games to eight unbeaten.

Said Ian McCall, "I always knew it would be a difficult match to win as Clyde have the best defensive record in our division. There's no denying they were on top in the first half but after the interval we had by far the better chances. The lads thought that big Sean's header had crossed the line before it was cleared away - in fact we had two cleared off the line in the second half. Clyde played well as I expected them to do but we didn't perform as well as we can. But overall I can't complain at a draw in difficult conditions. I'll take a point and move on. We've another tough one coming up at Broadwood on Saturday and three days later have Hamiltonat home. There's a few of our players carrying minor injuries at present so we have a testing time ahead of us".

Sponsor's man of the match, Sean O'Connor, was sure his header had crossed the line and felt it would have been the winner, "If the ref had given it I'm sure we would have picked up the three points". "I got a bit of a bang on the back of the head today and I've certainly been 'in the wars' in the past few weeks. But being a striker that comes with the territory.

Attendance today - 2,109, those from Clyde - 316.

It's tighter than ever at the foot of the table now with both Livingston and Partick Thistle sucked into the battle against the drop following Airdrie United's 1-0 victory at Firhill this afternoon:
Team P F A Pts.
Partick Thistle 30 43 57 39
Livingston 30 37 40 38
QUEENS 30 31 46 35
Ross County 30 32 47 32
Airdrie United 30 32 46 31

Andrew in the limelight 23rd March 2007
What a difference a goal makes. Just ask Andrew Barrowman that! Says the big striker who scored that all-important equaliser in the dying minutes last Saturday. "My phone's been 'red hot' this week! I've had the 'Sunday Mail', Radio West Sound and the club 'Website' all on for interviews, but I'll take the publicity when it's going".

Just like any footballer, Andrew's obviously not too happy sitting on the bench but admitted, "I understand the manager's predictament. He'll be reluctant to change a winning team so I'll just have to bide my time, be patient and grab the opportunity when it arises. With big Sean and 'Dobbs' banging in the goals it's going to be difficult, but I'll give it my best shot.

"However, I've always been named in the squad although I've only had one start since returning. But I'm quite settled at Queen of the South--it's a well-known club, all the lads are great and I've always had a good reception from the supporters every time I've come on.

"It was super to get my first goal against Dundee last Saturday. We left it very late, but better late than never, and that point could be so important at the end of the season. I got a couple in a friendly match earlier that week and that helped boost my confidence.

"The squad is much stronger than it was when I left. The manager has made some useful signings in the transfer window and the team are 'flying' just now. They're playing with a lot more belief and passing the ball about well and the only defeat since my return was against Hibs in the cup.

"I was delighted just to get on that day. It was a tremendous atmosphere, the fans were brilliant and to run them so close was an achievement in itself as Hibs are one of the best football playing sides in Scotland at present.

"I'd love to get on against Clyde on Sunday for that goal has whetted my appetite for more! But I'll have to wait and see."

Here's hoping for 'Beautiful Sunday' 21st March 2007
Although we meet Clyde twice in six days, Ian McCall is looking no further than this weekend's match at Palmerston. "It will certainly be another hard game" he insists. "Clyde and Queen of the South are undoubtedly the two form teams in the first Division at present so I'm hoping for a bumper Sunday afternoon crowd and a big home support to help us put another three points on the board.

"It's our 'match in hand' and gives us a golden opportunity to put a five point advantage between Ross County and ourselves. Clyde are an excellent team who have surprised many football pundits this season. They also have a lot of young legs in their squad, all full of running. They did lose a few good players recently and everyone thought they'd suffer, but all credit to Joe Miller and his backroom staff, they're still up there fighting in fourth spot.

"We beat them 4-2 in the CIS Cup back in August but both teams could well have scored a lot more goals. We played well that night and that's the kind of performance I'm after on Sunday. We then met them at home a month later in the league and they beat us 2-0 going on six, and to me that was our worst performance of the season.

"However, we're a different side now, having lost only two games at Palmerston in the past five months. One of those was against Hibs in the Scottish Cup and just look at how they destroyed Kilmarnock in the CIS Cup Final on Sunday. I was there to witness it first hand, and it proves how well we actually played to run them so close in the cup-tie last month.

"We're on a good run at the moment--seven league games unbeaten at Palmerston and 17 goals scored into the bargain. We fear no team on our home ground and with the fans behind us I'm after another three points this Sunday as the basement battle's far from over yet".

All season ticket holders are reminded that ticket number 11 is required for admission on Sunday. Kick-off 3 pm as usual.

Queens go down at Raydale 20th March 2007
Queens lost 3-1 to Gretna at Raydale tonight in the Reserve League. There were no scoring in the first half but Sean O'Connor put Queens in front shortly after the interval. There were no further goals until the final quarter when Gretna netted two within minutes and the homesters made certain of victory with a third just before the final whistle.

The good news is that Stevie Tosh played for fully an hour; Andy Aitken was on for 70 minutes and Paul Burns made his comeback when he came on as a sub.

Charity Night at Palmerston 18th March 2007
Last night over eighty supporters turned out to attend 'the Legends' Question and Answer Charity Night at Palmerston. The event was hosted by Des McKeown and featured Queens Legends Stevie Mallan, Tommy Bryce, George Rowe and popular journalist Bill Leckie.

Also in attendance to support the cause were club chairman Davie Rae, captain Jim Thomson and Andy Aitken - fresh from his first appearance of the season.

The Legends team answered supporters questions about events both on and off the park for over ninety minutes, raising over £1200 pounds for McMillan Cancer Support through a raffle and auction of items donated for the event.

Davie Rae successfully bid for Willie Gibson's debut Kilmarnock top and Drew Low won an item of Ted McMinn Testimonial memorablia - both of which are destined for the club museum.

Match reaction 17th March 2007
A goal in injury time kept Queens' unbeaten run of seven league games going but they left it oh so late. It was a blustery Palmerston and we faced a strong wind in the first half , however we took the lead when diminutive winger Stevie Murray crashed home the opener in the thirteenth minute. Two bad defensive blunders cost us dearly and at 2-1 down and the seconds ticking away it was left to substitute Andrew Barrowman to snatch a late equaliser. After 65 minutes the manager went for broke and made three substitutions and it worked. With Graham Weir ruled out following a groin strain in the pre-match warm up Andy Aitken was on the bench and came on in the second half to do a sterling job. Although we didn't win we gained a precious point on Airdrie United who lost to St Johnstone and with Ross County only drawing with Clyde we still lead the Dingwall side by two points with a match in hand and that will take place next Sunday when we play host to Clyde.

A relieved Ian McCall admitted afterwards, "We got out of jail!, The equaliser came late - too late for comfort. I was pleased for Andrew Barrowman - it was his first goal for the club and a vital one at that but I felt Sean O'Connor missed an even easier chance just moments earlier. Basic mistakes led to both lost goals. In recent weeks our defence has been watertight but I can't say that this afternoon. In early season Jim Lauchlan took a bit of stick but his organisational skills were sorely missed out there today, initially I hadn't planned to play Andy Aitken but he looked good when he came on. However credit to Dundee. They defended well and allowed us precious few chances, Stevie Murray took his goal well, he never gave up and fought to the bitter end. But I must admit I was a bit disappointed with only a draw, however you can't win them all".

Goal hero Andrew Barrowman lapped up the praise at the end and commented, "I'm delighted to get on the scoresheet at last. That was my first goal for Queens although I grabbed a couple in a friendly game earlier in the week. Some claimed that it was another player who got the final touch but it was my goal and nobody's taking that from me. It kept our unbeaten run going and I'm proud of that".

Added skipper Jim Thomson, "That was a late late late show but that point could be worth it's weight in gold come the end of the season. We can't afford to sit back and rely on other teams losing - it's all about us and we must go all out to win every game".

Crowd - 1967, sponsors man of the match - Stevie Murray.

Jamie to stay at home 15th March 2007
Following discussions today, Jamie Adams will not now be going to Canada next week. Said Ian McCall this evening, "I had a chat this afternoon with the Scotland Under-20's team manager and he agreed that Jamie need not travel with the squad which leaves him free to play against Clyde next Sunday. He's happy that Jamie's getting regular games with Queens and assured me that in no way would it jeopardise his chance of making the squad for the Under 20's World Cup which takes place in Canada in July".

Originally the talented teenager was due to fly out for two friendlies games to get acclimatised for the big event later this year. Those are both scheduled for British Columbia on Canada's far-west coast--one in Burnaby and the other on Vancouver Island.

Jamie himself was quite happy with the arrangement and said, "As long as it doesn't affect my chances of playing in the World Cup I'm not too bothered. I was quite looking forward to it but it saves a long journey. I'll be just as content to stay at home and help Queens".
He conceeds it's been a real 'eye-opener' playing in the First Division. "It's a very good standard" he stressed, "Much higher than I ever expected but I'm thoroughly enjoying myself here. I'm getting regular football and that's better than playing in the Premier Reserve League.

"It's brilliant at Queen of the South! All the boys are great and I really feel at home. I know both Stevie Murray and Andy Barrowman from Kilmarnock and, of course, Willie Gibson trained with us for several weeks before making a permanent move to Rugby Park. And there's also Jamie MacDonald who played with me for Scotland's Under 20's and my pal from Stranraer, Mark Whorlow.

"I really enjoy playing alongside Neil Scally. We have a similar style although he's a lot more experienced, but I feel we've blended well together.

"I've played eight games for Queens now and have only finished on the losing side once. That was against Hibs in the Scottish Cup and with a crowd of over 6000 the atmosphere was electric. It's by far the biggest crowd I've played in front of and I felt we were a bit unlucky to lose. I had a half chance myself to equalise late in the game but the angle was just too tight. All I could do was square it across the face of goal but, unfortunately, there were no takers.

Happy to Stay.
"But my most enjoyable match to date was down at Gretna when we won 3-0. It was a 'local derby', they were league leaders and Queens had never beaten them before. So it was a memorable occasion".

Jamie has netted three goals for us so far--quite commendable for the position he plays in. He adds, "They were all important, but I'd say the best one was up at Hamilton as it was my first for my new club. I still see quite a lot of the Kilmarnock lads. I train with them on Mondays and Tuesdays and then I'm at Dumfries on Thursday evening to meet up with the Queens' players. So, you might say I get the best of both worlds".

His father farms at Kirkcolm, just north of Stranraer, and Jamie still stays there with his mum and dad. He's a big, strong lad so, no doubt, he'll be called upon to assist when there's heavy work to be done. Sorry you'll miss the trip to Canada, Jamie, but here's hoping you'll help us get another three points on the board against Clyde instead, which will be some consolation.
Team News 15th March 2007
Queens meet Dundee on Saturday but Ian McCall won't be naming his team until just before kick-off. Said the manager, "Several players are doubtful, so it's a case of 'wait and see'. Jim Lauchlan has a groin strain, Stevie Tosh's knee is still bothering him a bit and there's a question as to whether Colin Scott will be fit enough to go on the bench or not. I rate all three 50-50.

"Sean O'Connor got a knock on his knee, but I think he'll be O.K. Paul Burns was due for a recall but has a family bereavement to attend so he'll be missing. Although Andy Aitken played for fully an hour in a friendly game on Monday night I'd like to see him with another reserve game 'under his belt' before committing him. He'll play for the reserves at Raydale on Tuesday night and we'll take it from there.

Warren Moon has a very bad groin injury and won't play again this season. At the end of October he was coming on to some good form, but owing to injuries and new players coming in he was unable to claim a regular first team place, so in fairness to both the club and Warren himself, he'll be leaving us next week. We wish him well for the future.

It's looking better now! 13th March 2007
Four league wins in a row and not one single goal conceded. We now sit in 8th spot in the table and five points clear of both Airdrie United and Ross County. Who would ever had dreamt that four and a half weeks ago when we were five points adrift at the bottom.

Ian McCall agreed and added, "We've had a terrific run of late and long may it continue. We played exceptionally well against Airdrie, Gretna and St Johnstone, but the most satisfying result for me was the win over Ross County on Saturday. We were 'out on our feet' in the last 20 minutes but still held out for another 'clean sheet'. All credit to the lads for that.

"That win took us up to 8th place, and after our poor start to the season, that was always our target and I'm delighted to be there. I've said before that 8th spot was our 'Holy Grail' and now that we've reached it we can look onwards and upwards. Livingston and Partick Thistle are 'back in the mix' and 'catchable' and 6th place could now be a realistic achievement.

"However, we must remain focussed at all times! Should complacency creep in and we get a couple of bad results, we could just as easy be back at the bottom again. Everyone at the club must stick together in the 'run-in'--the Board, the management, the players and, of course, you the fans. We're not out of jail yet!

"Another encouraging sign on Saturday was the crowd--almost two and a half thousand. That was great! I fully realise that there were a lot of kids there, but I don't have a problem with that. They made a lot of noise and they are our fans of the future. So, good on you!"

Looking forward at the fixture list, Clyde at Broadwood and St Johnstone, away, appear to be the two most difficult, but the manager was quick to impress, "To me, the hardest game is always the next one we play, and that's Dundee on Saturday. We've met them five times already this season and every single one's been close. We beat them 2-0 on their last league visit here, but they've beaten us twice up at Dens Park.

"So, we'll have to buckle down and try and get another three points on the board. We don't fear any side at Palmerston now, and with Clyde at home a week on Sunday, we must strive to make home advantage count".

In an unusual scenario all five bottom clubs are at home this coming week, but although Airdrie are now off the bottom of the table on goal average, they have by far the most difficult 'run-in'. After Saturday, five of their last seven games are away from home which is tough.

Reserve match off again 13th March 2007
The reserve match against Morton at Cappilow, re-scheduled for last night, was called off yet again. Instead, a friendly game against Glasgow University was played at the Science Parks, Queens winning, 5-1.

Although the home side scored first, goals from Graham Weir and Andrew Barrowman gave us a 2-1 interval lead. Both Weir and Barrowman added to their tally in the second half and Scott Robertson rounded off the scoring 10 minutes from the end.

Two plus points--Andy Aitken, on his comeback, played for fully 60 minutes and Barrowman was on the scoresheet, not once but twice.

Our line-up was: Ross Hyslop, Glen Mitchell, James McLaughan, Murray Henderson, Andy Aitken (Aaron Muirhead), Paul Burns (Lewis Walker), Scott Robertson, John O'Neill (James Baty), Graham Weir, Andrew Barrowman (Mark McGinlay) and Mark Whorlow.

Next Tuesday the Reserves are due to meet Gretna at Raydale Park in the Reserve League and the following Tuesday will play Annan Athletic in the Southern Counties Challenge Cup at Palmerston.

Reserves match tonight 12th March 2007
Queens will meet Morton at Cappielow tonight in the Reserve League. It's fully expected that Andy Aitken will make his come-back and, if so, it will be the popular defender's first competitive match since his cruciate injury against Coleraine back in July. Says Andy, "It's almost nine months and that's a long time to be out. But I've been back in training for four weeks now and I can't wait to get back in action again".

Queens are also scheduled to meet Gretna in a reserve fixture a week on Tuesday and will play Annan Athletic in the Southern Counties Challenge Cup the following week.

Match reaction 10th March 2007
Queens started so well - 2-0 up in only 12 minutes but perhaps it was just too well. For after that they appeared to fade! Maybe the two tough matches against Gretna and St Johnstone took their toll but by the end the home fans were relieved to hear that full time whistle. Never the less it was three more valuable points and the gap between both Airdrie United and Ross County is now five points with eight games left to play. That's four clean sheets in a row in the league and no one's complaining.

Said Ian McCall. "As far as supporters were concerned it didn't match the Gretna and St Johnstone games but from a personal point of view it was an even more satisfying result. We beat the team that were just below us in the table and we're five points clear of both them and Airdrie United now. With both Partick and Livingston losing today they're both very much in the battle at the bottom. We trail Thistle by only three points and Livingston by four with a game in hand. But as I've so often said eighth place would be an achievement in itself. We got off to a great start - two goals in twelve minutes, but we could easily have had a couple more in that early burst of pressure. After that they had no other option but to come at us but apart from two stramashes in the penalty area they never really looked like scoring. I thought Neil Scally and Jamie Adams were tremendous! But we've got to stay focused as our next two matches are at home and will be critical. There were some very tired legs out there today after three games in a week. However they now have a week to recover and are having a 'night on the town' tonight and they thoroughly deserve it."

Added Jamie Adams, "That's three good results in a row and we're all delighted. We didn't play quite so well today, but we 'dug in' and ground out a result and that's the main thing. We're gradually catching up on the teams above us and the confidence in the dressing room is 'sky high'. Neil Scally agreed and beamed, "What a week it's been. Definitely the best of the season! After going two up I don't know where we found the energy to hold on for about eighty minutes. Perhaps we allowed them more possession than normal in the second half but at no time did they 'cut us open'".

Said an anxious Ross County manager Scott Leitch, "We got off to a terrible start and nothing at all went for us this afternoon, we were denied a stonewall penalty early on and had that been given and we'd scored it could all have been so different".

Jim Lauchlan left the field nursing a groin strain and Warren Moon is now out for the season, also with a groin injury.

Stevie on target 9th March 2007
Stevie Murray netted his first goal for Queens on Tuesday night and now the wee winger's hungry for more. Speaking to the 'Website' yesterday Stevie said, "I'm not renowned for scoring too many goals--I think I only managed three at Kilmarnock! But I enjoyed that one against St Johnstone.
"It wasn't great, it was more an opportunist goal, but it was an important one and they all count. When John O'Neill played the ball in I made a run for the near post and just poked it home.

"It's always good to get off the mark at a new club, it gets the 'monkey off your back' so to speak. In modern day football wingers don't score many goals--it's a rare commodity! But I hope it's the first of many.

Added the former Scotland Under-21 internationalist, "We're on a good run just now. In our last two matches we've beaten the top two sides in the division and you can't ask for more than that. Everyone's on a high now! The gaffer's 'on song' and guys like Neil Scally and Jim Lauchlan give you that extra 'lift' in the dressing room. There's a great buzz about the place and a tremendous team spirit. All the lads are great, we get on well together and that's a big bonus at any football club.

Stevie Murray.
"At Kilmarnock I was left 'kicking my heels' at times. I was only get the odd 20 minutes at the end of a match, and no player enjoys that. Coming to Palmerston has been a great move. I'm now playing regularly, I love it here and the fans are brilliant. I enjoyed getting the full ninety minutes against St Johnstone but in the last ten minutes I don't mind admitting I was physically knackered.

"There's a lot of good players at Queen of the South and you must 'keep on your toes' to hold on to your place in the team. There's a lot of quality on the bench as well with the likes of Graham Weir, Andrew Barrowman and Murray Henderson all itching to get on. But competition is healthy in football--for both the club and the individual".

And what about next season we asked Stevie. "My contract at Killie runs out in the summer, so I'll have to wait and see what I'm offered" he replied. "Obviously, I'd love to play in the Premier League if the opportunity arose but I'm really enjoying it here and it's always good to have options available".

Give us more vocals says the manager 7th March 2007
Ian McCall has appealed for more vocal support from the fans to help cheer Queens on to another three points against Ross County on Saturday. "I know you can do it" said the manager, "You've done it before. More bodies through the gate would help such a lot as well. Our players are giving their all just now, so let's get behind them.

"Ross County, like ourselves, are fighting for their lives at present. They'll come down here and 'sit in', so it's up to us to get forward and score goals. We've just beaten the two top sides in the league within the space of four days, but if we don't get the right result on Saturday that would mean nothing.

"We're still 'in the thick of it' and fighting, but since the turn of the year we've come on in 'leaps and bounds'. Back then I said, 'Let's make Palmerston a fortress' and in recent weeks that's what's happened. Not only are we defending well at home but we're getting 'clean sheets' away as well. We've not conceded a single goal in our last three league matches, and that's the way I want it!

"At the start of the season we lost our first four home league games, never even scored a goal but conceded eight. But look at us now, 13 from 5! Nevertheless, we can't afford to 'take our foot off the pedal'. We've three more home matches coming up and I want as many points as possible in those games. I want as much space as possible between ourselves and Ross County and Airdrie, and if we continue to play the way we are, I'm confident we'll be in the First Division again next season".

Team News 7th March 2007
Following the mid-week battle against St Johnstone, Queens report no injury problems for Saturday's home game with Ross County. They are expected to name an unchanged squad but Paul Burns may be added. Said manager, Ian McCall, "Tuesday was another step forward for Stevie Tosh on his road to recovery. Colin Scott has now resumed training".

Match reaction 6th March 2007
Queens just keep rolling along. On Saturday it was league leaders Gretna and tonight it was second top St Johnstone who fell to the 'super south'. It was one of the most exciting games seen at Palmerston for many a long year and at the final whistle the reception received as they left the field was well deserved.

Said Ian McCall afterwards, "It was a great game of football for the fans but nerve racking for the manager. St Johnstone are a good side and pushed us all the way, it could well have been six all out there. They had their chances and three times we were one on one with the 'keeper but couldn't score. It was a physical game. They have a lot of big boys and play a lot of high balls, however our defence coped well. Jamie MacDonald was superb in goal and some of his saves were out of this world. All of our players worked tirelessly on a very heavy pitch and there's some sore legs in that dressing room tonight. However I'm delighted with another three points which takes us above Ross County. But there's still a lot of fighting to be done - if we don't get a result on Saturday it could be all change again. So we can't relax".

Added Saints manager Owen Coyle, "I've always said Palmerston is a hard place to come and get a result. We came here tonight to win but it was Queens who picked up the points. We started well enough but after Queens scored they had a good fifteen minute spell and put us under a lot of pressure. In the second half we did most of the attacking but Queens were always dangerous on the break. But we've only ourselves to blame - we missed too many sitters. Young MacDonald in goal had a magnificent game and some of his saves were nothing short of brilliant".

Said Jamie himself, who was also voted the sponsors man of the match, "What a game, what an atmosphere, I really enjoyed it. I never expected anything like this when I came to Palmerston. It's been brilliant. That's three shut-outs in a row I've had in the league and I can't ask for much more than that".

We're all up for it says Lauchie 6th March 2007
Following our excellent win at Gretna, Jim Lauchlan is now looking forward to tonight's game against St Johnstone even moreso. Says the big defender who played such a major role at Raydale, "It's our 'match in hand' and we must make it count. If we can win we move above my old club, Ross County, into the comfort spot of eighth place".

But Jim's been in the game long enough to realise it won't be easy and was quick to add, "St Johnstone are a strong side and were actually my personal tip for promotion at the start of the season. And with us beating Gretna on Saturday they're still in there with a chance.

"I've played against Owen Coyle many times. He was always a difficult opponent and read the game well and I'm certain he's now a very shrewd manager. Tonight will be St Johnstone's third game in six days and they might be that little bit tired, but I'm sure that great cup win over Motherwell will keep their momentum going".
Looking back to Saturday's clash Jim heaped praise on his team-mates, in particular the new boys Ian McCall brought in during the January 'Window'. He emphasised, "At the start of the season we were hard hit with horrendous injuries which led to an unsettled defence. We experimented with a 'back three' and a 'back four with players playing out of position', but neither really worked and we were leaking goals.

"But when Jimmy McQuilken arrived he slotted into the 'problem position' of left-back and Eric Paton moved into his normal slot on the right, and we've never looked back since! Every single one of the manager's January signings have proved a huge success, they've all played their part and have helped strengthen our squad considerably. We're more solid now and I trust this will lead to long-term stability in the ranks.

Big Jim in commanding form in the township.
"Jamie Adams has come in and linked well with Neil Scally and I'm happy to have Jamie MacDonald behind us in goal. I'm glad he's here to the end of the season as he's made some good saves at vital times. When it comes to scoring goals, Stephen Dobbie's on fire at present, and long may that continue. Stevie Murray and Stevie Tosh haven't featured too much yet owing to injury and being 'cup-tied, but once they both get back on a regular basis they'll play a vital role.

"I'd like to think that Jim Thomson and myself have now built up a good understanding in central defence. I've know big Jim for many years--he's a great player, a top club man and an excellent skipper. We were all so pleased to beat Gretna on Saturday. It was one we all wanted to win so much, not only for ourselves but for our loyal fans who have stuck by us through good and bad this season.

"We've hit a bit of form lately and 'have our tails up' at the moment, but it's important we keep it going. Our next four games are all at home and we must do our best to capitalise on that advantage. We've only lost twice at Palmerston since mid October and it's so vitally important to keep on winning those home games. So we'll be going all out to do so".

Bring on the Saints 5th March 2007
Having put Gretna 'to the sword' on Saturday, Queens take on second-placed St Johnstone tomorrow night. (Kick-off 7.45 pm).

Saints boast the best home record in the division, but are more vulnerable away from home having won only twice in the league this season on their travels. However, we musn't forget that one of those was against us at Palmerston back in August.

Following their cup win over Motherwell at Fir Park last week they drew with Ross County on Saturday in a match they should have won. Tomorrow will be their third game in the space of six days and they'll have had a tiring time of it with a long haul up to Dingwall at the weekend and a trip down to Dumfries tomorrow.

Nevertheless, they now trail Gretna by only nine points, with two games in hand, and will still have their sights set on the Premier League.

Following Saturday's result Ian McCall is up for another challenge but reflecting back to Gretna he stated, "It was an excellent performance against a team who'd beaten us three times this season, so we'll happily take the bragging rights when they're going.

"They had very few shots on target and Jamie MacDonald dealt capably with those that were. But he nearly gave me a blooming heart attack when he let that harmless ball slip under his boot. It went only a couple of inches past the post--it would have been a disaster had that gone in.

"That win was for our supporters for we all knew how much they wanted it. It's been a long time in coming and it was great to see them 'lapping it up' although Raydale Park doesn't lend itself to atmosphere.

"I don't think all the fuss in the newspapers will bother Stephen Dobbie too much. A Chinese club put in an offer, the Chairman rejected it although it was flattering and Stephen himself says he's happy here at Palmerston. So, as far as I'm concerned, that's that!

"However, I'm greatly indebted to Owen Coyle for allowing Stephen to come to Queen of the South. He gave us 'first shout' when he became available, we took it and I don't have to tell you what a capture he's been. Owen is probably my closest friend in football--we go back a long way. Nevertheless, we both know full well that affinity will be put on hold come tomorrow night.

"I was on duty at St Johnstone's cup-tie at Fir Park and they completely outplayed Motherwell on their own ground. I only hope they don't play like that against us! I think St Johnstone will be even harder to beat than Gretna but we want a win to keep our run going.

"We've scored 12 goals in our last 4 league matches and that's pretty impressive when you consider what we were like a few months ago. But we're a totally different team now! I feel the improvement first started back in November when we won three home games in a row, but once the new players came in during the January 'Window' it made all the difference.

"I was studying past league results between Saints and Queens at Palmerston over the past four years and every one's been close. There's hardly ever been more than a goal in it, so I fully expect another tough battle tomorrow night".

A St Johnstone Viewpoint by Owen Coyle

Following their splendid victory over Motherwell at Fir Park last week, St Johnstone are now only 90 minutes away from 'history in the making' and only the 'small problem' of Celtic can prevent them reaching the Scottish Cup final for the first time in their 123 year existence. Manager, Owen Coyle, is obviously delighted at their success but remains adament that a Premier League place is still top priority.

Said Owen, "Of course it's great to be in the semi-finals and it would be even nicer to reach the final itself, but we must stay fully focussed on the league as well, for promotion means so much for us. And I'm sure Ian McCall will be saying much the same, for staying in the First Division will be his major objective this season.

"I watched the highlights of the Queens v Hibs cup-tie and I've got to say that Queens more than merited a draw. But our win at Motherwell and Queens' performance only underlines the quality of the clubs in the First Division. Hibs are one of the top teams in the Premier League and, on their day, the most 'free playing' side in that division. I spoke to both Ian and Gordon Chisholm after the game and told them I felt they were very unlucky.

"Queens did us a big favour on Saturday by beating Gretna 3-0. That was an amazing result and the margin of victory really surprised me. It's a pity we couldn't have reciprocated and done ourselves a favour into the bargain by defeating Ross County. It was a match we should have won and I look upon it as two points dropped.

"As far as I'm concerned the First Division is the most difficult league in football to win promotion from as only one club goes up. They're play-offs at the bottom so I think it's only fair they should be play-offs at the top as well.

"I'm not being patronising but matches at Dumfries are never easy fixtures and results between Queens and ourselves in recent seasons have proved that to be a fact. Coming down to Palmerston Park is about as tough as they come.

"In early season Queens were plagued by injuries and started badly but since the turn of the year Ian has brought in some quality players and they are now doing very well indeed. He pulled of a 'Great Escape' last season and there's no doubt in my mind he will do the same this season.

"Stephen Dobbie is now 'scoring goals for fun' at Palmerston. He was with us at St Johnstone for 18 months and there was no doubting his ability, but we had a lot of good strikers ourselves and he wasn't getting a game, so I felt it only fair to let him move on to a good club where he could get first team football.

"Having said that I was reluctant to release him and it was only because of the bond that I had with Ian and 'Chis' that I let him go. My friendship with Ian McCall goes back a long way. I was his player coach at both Airdrieonians and Falkirk but that friendship will go 'out the window' for a couple of hours tomorrow night. But, once it's all over, we'll sit down as usual and share an Irn Bru.

"However, it's not just the management team that I know well at Queen of the South. I played alongside Jamie McQuilken, Stevie Tosh and Stephen Dobbie and everyone in Scottish football knows big Jim Thomson and Jim Lauchlan. The pair of them were my adversaries for many years in my playing days, so it will be nice to see them both again.

"I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night and I'm pretty sure it will turn out to be another close encounter".

Stephen's staying put 4th March 2007
Despite a staggering offer of £100,000 for Stephen Dobbie from Chinese club, Guangzhou, Chairman David Rae insisted that our star striker's 'staying put' and added, "I wouldn't sell him for 'all the tea in China'. The club's agent in Britain was on to Ian McCall twice last week, but the way he's scoring goals at the moment, he's going nowhere. Stephen's under contract with us until May next year, but if he continues to keep knocking the goals in we'll have one heck of a job holding on to him come next season".

Stevie's a happy man 4th March 2007
Stevie Tosh was one happy player as he trooped off Raydale Park yesterday. He'd come back sooner than expected after his knee injury at Airdrie a couple of weeks ago and had just witnessed his new team pull off a shock 3-0 victory over his former club.

Speaking to the 'Website' this morning Stevie enthused, "It was a brilliant all-round team performance but after my first 'two touches' Queens' fans could be forgiving if they'd thought I was still playing for Gretna. Not many sides come down to Raydale and score three goals and considering Queens had been on the receiving end of three big defeats by them earlier this season it says a lot for them. The last time they were at Gretna it was a 5-0 drubbing, so it shows just how much we've improved. The only player to cause them any real bother was David Graham.

Stevie looks keen to get back on the Raydale turf.

"It was nice to see a lot of my old team-mates again. Most of them are nice hard-working guys and it's not easy to forget that I spent two year of my life down there and memorable times that I wouldn't change. I was talking to some of those lads after the match and they were all shocked at the transformation in Queens. Gavin Skelton, Chris Innes and David Bingham (whose's off on loan to Stirling Albion tomorrow) just couldn't believe the improvement.

"Having watched most of the game from the touchline it was a very professional performance. To me, Jim Thomson was my 'Man of the Match', closely followed by Jim Lauchlan--the pair of them were a 'tower of strength' in defence. Big Sean was also tremendous, young Jamie Adams was everywhere and Stephen Dobbie bagged another brace of goals.

"After playing alongside 'Dobbs' I'm convinced he's still quite capable of Premier League football. He's got loads of natural ability, he can certainly score goals--all he needs is a bit more pace.

"You just need to look at our record to see how much we've improved since the end of the year. When I arrived we'd only managed one away win, that was at Livingston. In our last three away matches we've drawn at Hamilton, and beaten both Airdrie and Gretna. The home form was never too bad, but it's wins away that are so important in this division and that's made all the difference.
"The manager has stressed ever since I arrived at Palmerston that our first priority was 'to win our own wee league of three'. We're off the bottom now, and once we've achieved our target, then we can think about catching up with the likes of Partick Thistle and Livvy.

"After yesterday's game my knee feels 'so-so', but I fully realise that it's not going to get better 'overnight'. I feel the manager made the right decision putting me on the bench yesterday as I would never have lasted a full 90 minutes. I was just delighted to get on and play a small part in a great victory".

Match reaction 3rd March 2007
Queens arrived at Raydale Park this afternoon as underdogs against the league leaders but 'rolled up their sleeves' and gave a battling performance to run out worthy 3-0 winners. We are now of the foot of the table and 'hot on the heels' of third bottom Ross County who we meet next Saturday. So there's all to play for now!

Said a delighted Ian McCall, "We've had three 'doings' from Gretna this season so to turn round and beat them 3-0 on their own patch was great. That was a different Queen of the South side out there today. We came here as a team and played like a team and deserved our success. It was another good all round performance and everyone played their part. Okay we were a bit fortunate at the two 'hand ball' decisions but when you play well the breaks often go for you. Bog Sean O'Connor was again immense and despite having two stitches just below his eye he was determined to go back on and play his part in a remarkable victory. Stephen Dobbie grabbed another two goals and that's ten in nine games - a tremendous strike rate. We had an offer of £100k for him this week from a Chinese club - I can't pronounce their name but the chairman turned it down flat and insisted 'he's staying at Palmerston'. He's got the ability and that was certainly one of his better games".

Stephen himself was naturally, 'over the moon', and joked, "The manager's been on at me about my weight but I've always been a 'stocky boy'. But on a more serious note he added, "I'm very happy here at present as long as I'm scoring goals I'm pleased and I think the fans will be too. I just go out there and do my best and as long as the team keeps winning I'm content."

A rather subdued Rowan Alexander commented, "You've got to earn the right to win a game and we didn't do that today. We didn't put much pressure on them and they could have scored more. We weren't up for the battle, we weren't mentally prepared and we didn't have the commitment that Queen of the South had this afternoon. They were fighting for survival and it showed! We had a lot of decent chances and had one or two decent calls for hand ball in the box disallowed. It just wasn't our day."

Andy Aitken is still progressing well but manager, Ian McCall says, "After being out for so long I'd rather not 'throw him in at the deep end'. I'd prefer he had a couple of reserve games first".

Paul Burns has undergone 'keyhole surgery' on his knee and is keen to return and keeper, Colin Scott, is also close to a return.

Skipper on the move 28th February 2007
No, don't panic, big Jim's not leaving Palmerston! However he has covered hundreds of miles over the past few months in his new role on the commercial side and working for the 'Active Schools Programme'.

Last week he was off on his travels again his first port of call being Nethermill Primary last Wednesday. The following day he hadn't that far to go with Laurieknowe School getting a visit and on Friday it was up to Johnstonebridge where the pupils were all excited about the Hibs match the next day.

This coming week Jim has a more hectic schedule ahead of him with a long trip today to Eskdale to take in the schools at Canonbie and Glenzier followed by a visit on Thursday to Calside Primary and Cargenbridge in Dumfries. He ends his week in the Lockerbie area at Hutton Primary.

Keep up the good work big man.

Looking back to Saturday's match Jim said, "When the final whistle blew we were all gutted for we felt we'd done more than enough to merit a draw. Every player fought hard, there were no failures. The fans themselves were again tremendous and got really behind us, especially in the second half when we were pushing for the equaliser. However, we in no way disgraced ourselves and we are now free to concentrate fully on the league and staying up in the First Division".

Cup dream over 27th February 2007
The drama of the Scottish Cup is now behind us for another year but that gallant fight against Hibs on Saturday will long be remembered by the Palmerston 'faithful'. It's now back to the battle for survival in the league with the two top teams to play within the space of four days. Ian McCall was still upbeat when he spoke to the 'Website this afternoon and said, "The Hibs' game will always be memorable, but it was one we certainly didn't deserve to lose. I've been in the game now for 25 years and when John O'Neill headed home that equaliser it was as great a moment as I've had in football.
"To see Palmerston erupt as it did gave me a great sense of achievement. To see it packed like that was a phenominal sight and every player played their part in turning it into a spectacle. I was proud to be a 'Doonhamer' that afternoon--I was proud of my players and proud for Dumfries. The downside, however, was losing such a 'soft' goal so quickly after we'd scored.

"I know that every club has 'floating fans' and we are fortunate to have a good 'hard-core' support, but what a difference it could make just to get an extra 1000 fans at Palmerston on a regular basis. That would generate sufficient funds to bring in a better quality of player. Whenever a new player arrives here they're all quick to say it's a great place to play football, so that's a compliment in itself".

McCall looks on as Queens press.
Looking forward to Saturday and the Gretna match the manager added, "We've two very difficult games coming up, but we'll take them one at a time. Although Gretna lost at the weekend they still sit top of the table so we'll treat them with the respect that deserves.

"We've already met them three times this season and lost them all, but the two games at Palmerston were not as bad as the final scorelines suggest. We played well, particularly in the early stages of the Ne'rday clash but lost bad goals at crucial times. The 5-0 defeat at Raydale was terrible--it could have been ten.

"However, we have a much stronger squad now and playing better, so we're all up for it."

Winger on the 'wings' 27th February 2007
One player who was left disgruntled and 'kicking his heels' on the sidelines on Saturday was Stevie Murray. Said our recent on-loan winger from Kilmarnock, "I would loved to have been in action against Hibs on Saturday. The atmosphere was electric and the crowd fantastic and it's the kind of match all players like to be part of. I couldn't play simply because I'd come on as a sub for Kilmarnock for 18 minutes against Morton in an earlier round back in January, and how I regret that now. However, the lads did great and deserved at least a draw and it was a great game to watch which was some consolation". Jamie can't wait to get the boots back on for the visit to Gretna this Saturday and added, "It's one we'd all love to win as they've beaten Queens thrice this season, so it's time for revenge".

Taking the 'Michael' 27th February 2007
Well done Michael Mullen whose currently out on loan at Stranraer. On Saturday he did what he's always done best--come on as a substitute for the 'Cleyholers' to score the equalising goal against league leaders, Morton, and helped his team go on to clinch a 'coupon busting' victory. Shades of that magical night at Dens Park last season.

Cup aftermath 26th February 2007
John O'Neill's opportunist header brought Queens back into the game on Saturday and the free-scoring midfielder, who's netted 12 already this season, will be hoping it's enough to earn him a place in the team for the 'local derby' against Gretna at Raydale on Saturday.
Said John, "It was a really hard game against Hibs but an enjoyable one. They're an excellent team with good movement in midfield, but we didn't allow them many opportunities to score until that fateful minute just before half time. The crowd was fantastic--it was an amazing atmosphere in the ground and I only wish we could play in front of crowds like that every week. My girlfriend and my wee girl were there and even she said they enjoyed the buzz.

"We certainly didn't deserve to lose! After they scored their second goal we pushed forward in numbers but we just couldn't manage that elusive equaliser". On the goal itself John confessed, "Initially I made my way across for a long throw-in but when Jamie McQuilken whipped the ball across I got myself between two defenders and found the bottom corner of the net with a good header. The fans went crazy and I felt 10 feet tall.

Jonjo celebrates.

"I hoped it might have been a 'springboard for victory' but it was not to be! They went ahead again with a rather 'soft' goal within three minutes and although we gave it our best shot the breaks just didn't go for us.

"With the new lads coming in we've a much stronger squad now and everyone has to work that bit harder to keep their place in the team. I was fortunate to get a start on Saturday, score a goal, and I hope I've done enough to justify a place against Gretna. In Scottish Cup matches, in particular, it's even more difficult as the rule states that at least two outfield players, under 21, must be listed in the squad.

"However, it's the same for everyone--one poor game and you could miss out. So you must work hard all the time and 'keep on your toes'.

Can we survive this season? We asked. "Of course came the positive reply, we certainly can. We've 7 of our last 11 games at home, and we don't lose many at Palmerston now. And on top of that we're banging in the goals. Survival is in our own hands, we're all confident we can stay up so, it's all down to ourselves".
The Hibs' view

Said their skipper, Rob Jones, "They didn't give us what was expected--it was a good bit more than we expected. You've got to give them a massive pat on the back, a lot of credit has to go to them. The way we came back after losing the goal was fantastic but Queen of the South played well and how they're bottom of the First Division I have no idea as they gave us a real scare". And David Murphy, scorer of the Hibs' opener added, "Queens played brilliantly and that always seems to happen. Players from a lower division often manage to find that bit extra when they take on a side from the top flight. We expected a really tough game at an old-fashioned ground with a typical cup tie atmosphere and that's what we got".

A fond farewell to 'Oor Wullie'

Willie Gibson bid a poignant farewell to Palmerston on Saturday with a five-star performance, but the 'wing wizard' departed with one big regret adding, "I've only scored one goal for Queens in all my time here and I would love to have netted against Hibs to leave on a 'high'. It would really have made my day".

Although only 22, Willie has been at Palmerston for 10 years, graduating through the club's youth programme and that one and only goal he talks about came on January 8th, 2005 when he rifled home a spectacular counter in a Scottish Cup tie up at Montrose to help Queens triumph, 2-1.
He had a 'dream debut' as a youngster, coming on as a second half substitute against against Queen's Park in the last home game of season 2000-01 and, despite Queens losing 1-0, Willie won the 'Man of the Match' award. "That was another great day" he recalls. "I was only 16 at the time and I'll never forget it".

Willie was raised on the Solway coast at Southerness so it's little wonder he's a low handicap golfer, but he's now a family man, residing in Annan with his partner and kids. "Kilmarnock's just up the road" he insists, "So I'm not planning to relocate at present. I'm very close with some of the lads down here and I'll be keeping in touch with them. Killie and Queens share the same training ground on Mondays and Tuesdays, so no doubt I'll bump into them there as well.

"I'll be looking for their result coming through every Saturday but I'm confident they'll stay up in the First Division. After Saturday they have seven of their remaining fixtures at home and still have both Ross County and Airdrie to play at Palmerston, so here's hoping!"

Willie says goodbye.
In his time here he's certainly had his 'ups and downs' and admits, "I've had many a rollicking from Ian McCall but I realise now it was all for my own good. He's helped me an awful lot to control my temperment and often said that I reminded him of himself in his young days. I owe him a lot and he's helped make me a better player".

Willie would also like to pass on his thanks to the chairman, players, coaches, fans and everyone else at Queen of the South for their support and backing over the years, and we in turn wish him every success at Kilmarnock and in Premier League football.
