2005/06 Season Review
A serialised account of our season by our man who has been at every match home and away - Ewan Lithgow
Part Three - September
The break for the Scotland international meant that it was almost a fortnight before Queens got back to league action with a second consecutive visit from St Mirren. This time Queens played much better and at the end of the day were unlucky to lose the match, but lose it we did. Simon Lappin scored the only goal of the game when he prodded home a loose ball following yet another set piece. Derek Lyle almost grabbed a deserved equaliser but his header struck the outside of the post and he was later stretchered off with an injury that kept him out of the next three games.

Desperate to get a change of momentum into the side Iain Scott arranged a midweek closed door friendly at Carlisle noteworthy not so much for the score (we lost 2-1) as for the fact we fielded no less than four foreign Trialists in the match. The only one of them ever named was Armand One, the former Partick Thistle striker, who turned out to have a shin splint injury and would continue to rehabilitate with the club for some time without ever signing a deal. The others were respectively, a Senagalese centre half (who scored our goal) and forwards from Brazil and Tanzania, none of whom were ever seen again.

Back to the league business, the points tally was finally doubled in a dour scoreless draw at Stair Park. The biggest surprise of this one was the return of Colin Scott in goal and he had a fine game in a match that might have been won with a late Stuart Lovell effort. The point was not good enough to lift us off the foot of the table but did move us within a point of a Brechin City side also winless at that time.

Any hopes though that this was the beginning of a new dawn were soon dashed as we crashed at home again the following weekend. This time Hamilton Academical were the visitors who came, saw and conquered, leaving with a 2-1 victory. Graeme Jones scored early and Scott Tunbridge bagged a late winner. In between times John O'Neill's penalty kick had become only our second league goal of the season. Surely October would be better?
