Buddies Match Details 30th November 2003
The league match postponed yesterday versus St.Mirren has been confirmed as rearranged for Wednesday 3rd December with a 7.45pm kick-off.

A victory against the managerless Paisley side would see us regain top spot in the league and set up what without doubt would be the 'match of the day' in the first division next Saturday as we travel to Inverness who currently sit at the top of the league.

So let's ensure that the side get the support that they often recognise as being so crucial and get everyone to Palmerston on Wednesday to help us regain the league lead.

Remember that you can catch up with the Queens players and John Connolly as they turn on the Dumfries Town Centre Christmas lights tomorrow night. So be at the Midsteeple between 4.30 and 5.30pm to catch the big switch on.
Chance to go back top this week 29th November 2003
With today's match being called off owing to a waterlogged pitch Queens dropped to fifth place in the table. But it's not nearly as bad as it looks for a win against St.Mirren on Wednesday night would see us regain top spot.

Said John Connolly, "It's unbelievable how tight this league is with only two points separating the top six teams. However there's now a definite gap opened between the top sides and the bottom four, so it's important we hang in there with the leading pack.

"The results today went more or less as expected, perhaps Falkirk losing 2-0 to Clyde was a bit of a surprise but Falkirk have been playing better away than at their adopted home, Ochilview.

"I'm sure the fans were disappointed at the postponement today but if you'd seen the park at two o'clock it was like a lake. There's no way you could play football on that and that was proven true with the match at Gretna abandoned after only eighteen minutes.

"The call-off perhaps worked in our favour since three or four players, big Sean, Colin Scott and Bowser would definitely have missed out. Others were nursing minor knocks and flu symptoms so it gives us an extra four days breathing space to get them fit.

"Despite the atrocious conditions we did have a full squad training session this afternoon. It was very difficult but it was important we put in a shift with the St.Mirren game rescheduled for Wednesday night and a long trip to Inverness in front of us at the weekend.

"So here's hoping for a good turnout at Palmerston on Wednesday - your support is greatly appreciated by us all".

Torrential overnight rain that has continued through the day means that the scheduled first division match between Queens and St.Mirren due to be played at Palmerston this afternoon has been postponed. No firm date has been set for the re-arranged match as yet.

This season's good form has seen the average attendance at Palmerston rise to just under the 2,700 mark. In our 14 league matches to date we have amassed 26 points compared with 15 points at the same time last season.
Team News 27th November 2003
Queens have major injury problems going into Saturday's match against St.Mirren at Palmerston. Sean O'Connor and Colin Scott are definitely out and manager John Connolly is trying to secure a replacement 'keeper as back-up for John Dodds. Three other players are nursing niggling injuries and another is suffering from flu symptoms so a decision on their fitness will be reached prior to the game. Back however after suspension is Jim Thomson after his one match automatic suspension picked up against Ayr two weeks ago.

"We have difficult times ahead" said manager John Connolly "So we'll have to show the effort and commitment which helped us climb to the top of the table if we are to stay up there with the leaders.

"St.Mirren have Gus McPherson in charge now and a change of manager often gives a team added incentive, so it won't be easy.

"On a happier note big Sean O'Connor is getting on great and we hope to have him back in a couple of weeks".

Injury Update 25th November 2003
John Connolly is on the look-out for a 'keeper! Said the manager, "It appears Colin Scott will be out until March, so my immediate priority is to find a replacement. And I'll be looking for 'like for like' that is 'experienced for experienced' for in this league I feel it's essential".

On Saturday St.Mirren will be without manager John Coughlin who 'stood down' from the job today. His assistant Gus McPherson will be in charge for the match. Coughlin will remain with the club in a non-coaching capacity.

Queens Kick-Start 23rd November 2003
In an interview in today's Sunday Mail Robbie Neilson stressed how his spell with Queens made him a better player, said Robbie, "When I went on loan from Hearts to Queens I felt my career at Tynecastle had come to an end, I was glad to get myself down to Queen of the South because I had not played for ages at Hearts.

At Queens I got first team football and enjoyed myself. When you play first team football you get your confidence back and Queens were playing really well.

I played there for five or six months and it definitely upped my game because I came back to Hearts faster, fitter and stronger".

And following another excellent showing in the Edinburgh derby this afternoon, which saw his side triumph 2-0 Robbie spoke personally to the website.

"I meant every word I said in the paper" confessed Robbie "my spell at Palmerston really kick-started my career and I'll always be indebted to Queens for that.

"They're a great club - the fans were marvellous, the management great and the team spirit tremendous. I'll always have a soft spot for Queens and after playing on a Saturday their result is always the first one I look for. Infact I went along with my Dad to Broadwood yesterday to see them play Clyde and was disappointed they lost.

"My Dad stays in Glasgow and often goes to watch them when they're in the neighbourhood and my Mum sometimes goes as well. They're right Doonhamers.

"I went to Easter Road to see them play Hibs a few weeks ago - what a great following they had. Afterwards I met up with some of the players - I still keep in touch with them particularly Kenny Crichton and Paddy Atkinson.

"I'm delighted to see Queens doing so well this season and, who knows,if they should get promotion I might even be playing against them next season.

"Good luck Queens".

Clyde 3-1 Queens - Reaction 22nd November 2003
Well it had to happen sometime!

Seven miserable minutes at Broadwood which led to three goals for Clyde saw Queens crash 3-1 and lose their top of the table position. We now drop to second place with Falkirk trouncing ten-man St.Johnstone 4-0 at McDiarmid Park.

"It's been a bad day for the club" admitted John Connolly "losing the game was bad enough but losing our 'keeper after only seven minutes and knowing he could be out for the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder made it a hard pill to swallow. Steve Bowey and Brian Reid are both carrying injuries: Gary Wood had to come off today and big Sean is still sidelined. So we'll have to have a 'head count' at training on Monday night. We've certainly got difficult times ahead of us now.

We scored at a good time, just before the interval - I thought Gary took his goal well. But to lose three goals in seven minutes was hard to take. They're a big, strong physical team although I felt all three goals were badly defended and we could have done much better.

There were some big scores in our league today and the four bottom teams are now falling behind the rest. But as I keep saying we'll have to wait until after Christmas and we'll have a clearer picture then".

Former Queens favourite John O'Neill will miss out on a playing return to Palmerston next week following his straight red card today in the ninetieth minute of the Buddies hammering by Inverness at Love Street.

Bill Goldie
Team News 20th November 2003
Queens set off on Saturday hoping for three more points to retain top spot in the table but even a draw or a defeat against Clyde would see them drop no lower than second top place.

Sean O'Connor is still on the injured list and also missing will be Jim Thomson who is suspended following his red card against Ayr.

"These two will be a major loss to us" confided manager John Connolly "It's like St.Johnstone without Paatelainen and Dodds and Clyde minus Keogh and Kernaghan, however Sean has commenced some light training and we've set him a target of the Inverness match as his comeback" back in the squad will be Derek Allan who missed last weeks game owing to work commitments.

According to the national press Clyde have their problems as well. Goalkeeper Bryn Halliwell is doubtful with an ankle injury while stand-in Alan Morrison has a throat infection. Andy Millen, John Potter and Pat Keogh are also struggling to make the game.

Two months ago Queens beat Clyde 4-1 at Palmerston but John Connolly said "Forget that result, you can't go by that! Their 'keeper made two bad mistakes that afternoon - it will be a lot different at Broadwood. I'm expecting a testing game. We had two tight matches up there last season but our away record in the league has been excellent (We've only lost twice).

"Obviously we go all out to win every game but if we came home with a draw I wouldn't be too disappointed since it's a competitive league.

"The weeks ahead will prove a severe test for us both in fitness and player availability. Injuries and suspensions will play a major part but if this should arise it will give other players in the squad an opportunity to make their mark".

Reserves Defeated 18th November 2003
Two goals in extra time saw Queens go down 3-1 to Ayr United in the first round of the SFA League Cup at Palmerston tonight.

Queens had a strong team out which included first team squad players Andy Aitken, Derek Allan, Derek Lyle, Willie Gibson and Emilio Jaconelli.

There was little to chose between the teams in the first half but in the fortieth minute Derek Allan shot home to give Queens a 1-0 interval lead. Fifteen minutes into the second half the Ayr 'keeper pulled off a great save from Emilio Jaconelli but the visitors broke up the field and following a corner on the right Robert Burgess headed home the equalise.

Queens then put Ayr under some pressure - Jaconelli hit the post with a curling shot and Tony Ross brought of another fine save from their 'keeper. At the other end Stuart Robertson in the Queens goal tipped two net bound efforts from Mark McCall and Boyd Mullen over the bar in the space of five minutes.

So at full-time the score was 1-1.

Only five minutes of extra-time had elapsed when Stuart Robertson turned from Saint to Sinner. He raced out of goal but failed to clear his lines and Craig Conway stroked the ball into an empty net.

Ayr were in control now and with the last kick of the game Boyd Mullen netted to make it 3-1.

Queens 1-0 Ayr - Reaction 16th November 2003
The 1-0 victory over Ayr was our first home win against the Somerset men for twenty-five years. Said John Connolly "I told the boys before the game that we'd need three points today to get back to the top of the table again and they went out there and ground out yet another great result. But Ayr ran us very close and I was glad to hear the final whistle. If Derek Lyle's header had gone in it would have made it a lot easier for us but we're fighters and in our last three games have had to 'dig deep'.

"John Hillcoat had some outstanding saves but Alex Burke took his goal well and gave him no chance with that one. That win today was very important for it opens up a fifteen point gap between ourselves and the second bottom team (Ayr), if we'd lost this afternoon it would only have been nine. I'm not being a pessimist more a realist - it certainly eases the pressure when you've got some points in hand. We're thoroughly enjoying our ride at the top and plan to put as many points on the board before the bad weather bites in.

Another three and a half thousand crowd today which was great, thanks again to all our fans".

Campbell Money was naturally very disappointed, said the Ayr manager, "We put in a lot of effort, created lots of chances but still came out of it with nothing. However it was an interesting game to watch and our 'keeper made four great saves to keep us in the game when Queens were on top". Did Jim Thomsons sending off make it any easier for you we asked,"No, I don't think so " he replied "When Jim got the red card we were in ascendency at the time so it just made Queens more defensive minded. So it actually worked against us".

Said goal hero Alex Burke "The gaffer told us at half-time that we had to be sharper in front of goal. So my chance came very early in the second half - I just shuffled to the left to make some space for myself and found the target with a right foot shot. It was a great time to score and it takes my tally for the season up to nine - so I'm not complaining".

There was some confusion after the match concerning Jim Thomsons red card, but apparently he misses next weeks game against Clyde, although it wasn't a 'straight red' it was a league match which means he's automatically suspended for the next league game.

After being stretchered off Ayr 'keeper Ludovic Roy was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from concussion. But we're pleased to report that he arrived back at Palmerston just before the end of the game, he was okay and travelled back in the Ayr bus.

Team News 13th November 2003
John Connolly is calling on his players to concentrate and not allow any complacency to creep in as Queens prepare for Sunday's home game against Ayr United at Palmerston.

"We must be really competitive and go out there for all three points" he stressed "It's a local derby and these games have a habit of throwing up surprise results.

"We go into the match as favourites - we're top and they're second bottom - but that means nothing in this league. We beat them 4-1 at Somerset but they have improved since then and have actually being playing quite well away from home without getting the breaks.

"Again I appeal to the fans to come out and support us and I'm looking forward to a great game and a good atmosphere.

We'll be without Derek Allan and Sean O'Connor on Sunday. Sean is injured and Derek is unavailable due to work commitments. Sean had a scan in Dundee today and the specialist in Dumfries had a look at it and decided it would be better if he went for 'keyhole surgery'. So he goes into hospital in Carlisle tomorrow and they'll give his knee a bit of a clean out but if all goes well he could be back in about three weeks.

"We're now one third of the way through the season and are still top of the table and at long last people are beginning to take notice of us. However the next few weeks are vital. We have the three bottom sides, Ayr United, St.Mirren and Brechin City at Palmerston and having beaten them all away from home the fans will be expecting us to beat them all again. But they won't be easy games and it's important we stay focused if we are to remain in top spot going into December".

Ayr have their own injury problems with skipper Steven Ferguson and Mark Campbell ruled out for a month. Ferguson was stretchered off with knee damage against Inverness CT on Saturday while Campbell picked up a hamstring injury at training. Boss Campbell Money described it as "A huge disappointment as they are two of our most experienced players".

A Derek Lyle hat-trick saw Queens coast to an easy 7-0 victory in the South of Scotland League match against Wigtown at Palmerston tonight. Raith 0-1 Queens - Reaction 8th November 2003
After another bruising battle John Connolly described it as "Another tremendous result" said the manager "That's us still top of the table and once again we ground out a victory. They had us under a lot of pressure particularly in the second half but we defended really well. We should have scored in the first minute but both Alex Burke and Steve Bowey failed to put it away and in the second half I counted at least four more scoring chances, so looking at it from another angle we could well have won three or four nil.

"For a while in the second half they had us really hemmed in but the boys battled brilliantly and again their commitment was out of this world. They give me 110% week in week out and bear in mind that they're all part timers.

"So that's now four weeks at the top and we're all enjoying it while we can."

Alex Burke couldn't believe he missed that chance in the opening minute. Said the diminutive striker "The 'keeper made a good save but there's no doubt I should have buried it."

The official crowd today was 1944 with 350 up from Dumfries.

Our congratulations to John Connolly who has been named Division 1 "Bell's Manager of the Month" for October, although John was a winner several times while in Division Two it's a first since our promotion to the First Division.

He was thrilled to have won the prestigious award "It just proves how well the club has progressed over the past three years" he said "but I can only reiterate what I've emphasised in the past - it's a team effort.

"Although I get the plaudits we've got a great Board of Directors and backroom staff at Palmerston and they all deserve credit. And a special mention to the players who have given me 110% effort and commitment."

Team News 6th November 2003
This Saturday Queens head for Starks Park. Statistics point to an away win since we have lost only once in our last five away league games and Raith have won only one of their last five home league games. However John Connolly insists "You can't go by stats, they beat Brechin at home just recently and that got the monkey off their back. It won't be easy at Starks Park, remember they're the only team to have beaten us at Palmerston this season so we have a score to settle. Having said that we should have beaten them in our last meeting. We had numerous scoring chances early on and when they scored the opener it was in their first serious attack. But it's goals that change games and that's the reality of the situation. They have a lot of continental players who can pass the ball about well and when you go behind they can can make it difficult. I read in the papers that a flu bug is sweeping Starks Park and they could be without seven players. I'll believe that when I see their team sheet on Saturday. Two of those mentioned haven't played for a few weeks and let's not forget it's only Thursday and the rest still have time to recover".

Definitely out for Queens is Sean O'Connor who injured his knee on Saturday. "We think Sean could be missing for about a month" said the manager. "It's not his bad leg this time it's the other one. It could be his cartilege but he's going into hospital and they'll give his knee a wee bit of a 'clean out' and hopefully find out what's wrong. We'll certainly miss him for his strength up front plus the fact he's been knocking the goals in lately. But Gary Wood should be available after falling ackwardly and injuring his back on Saturday and we're hoping 'Bowser' will be fit as well.

"As the season progresses this league is getting tighter than ever. Although we're top at the moment, two defeats and we could be back in the bottom half of the table again. Just look at Stranraer last season! Six weeks from the end they were promotion contenders and they finished up being relegated. That's football for you!

"I was quite happy with a point on Saturday. We were without 'Bowser' and we lost Sean early on and I rate St Johnstone one of the best teams in our division. In the next four or five weeks we have a tough programme ahead of us. No games are easy in this league--especially the likes of Ayr and Brechin at home. They're matches you're expected to win which puts added pressure on us. But on a positive note a win on Saturday will ensure top place in the table and I think this is a great achievement for a part-time side".

Injury Status 4th November 2003
Queens leading scorer Sean O'Connor could well miss the next four games for the club, the big striker limped off with a knee injury after only thirteen minutes of the match against St.Johnstone on Saturday and is expected to be sidelined for around a month. However there's better news on Gary Wood and Steve Bowey, despite falling awkwardly on Saturday and injuring his back, Gary has now recovered and Bowser, who missed the match with a twisted ankle plus a bout of flu is also on the mend. It is hoped both will be fit for the trip to Kirkcaldy.

John Connolly's rallying call to fans two weeks ago appears to have paid off. Although Saturday's total was down on the Inverness CT match the 3000+ gate took our average home attendance this season to just over 2500. Our last three league matches Inverness CT at home (3547), Ross County away (2962) and St.Johnstone at home (3159) were the highest gates in Division One on the respective Saturdays. Add to that the 7613 attendance at the Hibs match and the total of 17281 watched Queens in the space of fifteen days.

Queens 1-1 St.Johnstone 1st November 2003
After the game John Connolly confessed that a draw was probably a fair result, said the manager, "I've always maintained St.Johnstone were a good side, they have strength in depth and they won't be far away come the end of the season. After we scored we soaked up a lot of pressure but in the second half I felt we were coming more into the game and forced two point-blank saves from their 'keeper. But then they equalised which was a bit of a blow.

"We missed Steve Bowey today and had to field two players, Gary Wood and Derek Lyle, who weren't exactly match fit, Sean O'Connor suffered a bad injury behind his knee and it could be his cartilage while Gary Wood hurt his back when he landed heavily in the penalty area and we'd certainly miss these two. However the rest of the results went for us and we're still top of the table. That's three weeks now and it's just brilliant."

Goal scorer Brian McColligan said he was just glad to be back in the team and delighted to have scored, admitted Brian, "The boys have been playing so well it was difficult to win my place back. I was a wee bit down in the dumps last week so George and Tim, (the youth coaches), took me to see the Under 15's play and the enthusiasm these boys showed really perked me up. It's my first start this season and I hope I've done enough to impress the gaffer." It was also a happy birthday to Brian yesterday and it seems that the midfielder likes to celebrate his birthday with a goal as he was 23 on Friday and last season he celebrated with a goal against Falkirk on the 2nd November.

Billy Stark confessed he was disappointed to be leaving with only one point, said the St.Johnstone boss man, "We had the bulk of the pressure, created a lot of chances but just couldn't stick them away. I couldn't ask for any more effort from my players but Queens defended well and made it difficult for us."

Ex. Queens favourite Brian McLaughlin admitted it was great to be back at Palmerston. He said, "I'll always have a soft spot for Queen of the South and I have a tremendous respect for the club. I had mixed emotions when my shot finished in the net", he said with a big grin on his face, "but I'm a St.Johnstone player now and that's what I'm paid to do. Okay it did take a wee deflection off big Jim Thomson but I'll still be claiming the goal."

Team News 30th October 2003
Following a taxing five days including a trip to Ross County and a cup tie at Easter Road, Queens are back at Palmerston on Saturday with St.Johnstone as visitors. This will be only their fifth home game of the season having played ten away from home but they go into the match knowing a victory will keep them top of the table.

The only player doubtful is skipper Steve Bowey who twisted an ankle at Easter Road on Tuesday night.

Commenting on the cup game manager John Connolly said, "Considering the travelling we've had lately I think the lads put up a good show against Hibs but there were we a lot of tired legs by the end of the match. Just look at some of the other results in the competition, such as Clyde and Brechin and the scoreline doesn't look so bad. After the Hibs game I told the players to have the rest of the week off. I think they deserve it!."

Crowd Problem 29th October 2003
Following the debacle at Easter Road last night which saw hundreds of Queens fans stuck in long queues with only two turnstiles open and some missing the first two goals, Vice Chairman Tommy Harkness issued the following statement on behalf of the Board of Directors,

"I'm told that Hibs officials, stewards and police were saying the information came from us that we'd have a travelling support of about two hundred for the game. This is ridiculous for I don't think anyone connected with Queen of the South would say anything like that. I'm angry and frustrated at the way our fans were treated and I'll be calling Hibs to establish how the situation arose and where they got the figure from.

"We have a big fan base in the South West and many more supporters in the Central Belt so it stands to reason we'd have a good travelling support although the 1800 plus did come as a big surprise to me as well. But it was great!

"On behalf of the board I'd like to thank each and every one of you for your support and hope you'll be out in force again for the St.Johnstone game."
