SHIRT SPONSORSHIP 31st May 2001
The name of Armstrong Waste Management will feature on the new 'Arsenal' style blue and white shirts of Queen of the South in the Scottish Second Division next season as the local companies name was first out of the hat in tonight's annual Shirt Sponsorship Draw. Ian Scott and his wife Lisa made the draw and chose Armstrong's name from the seventy seven entrants.

For a full list of winners see the Shirt Draw page.
MORE SIGNINGS IMMINENT 31st May 2001
Queens are reported in the Cumbrian press as expecting to sign a full back from Workington Reds.

The man in question is named as Alan Grey, who hails from Carlisle, is a 27 year old right sided defender who has made over a hundred appearances in two seasons with Reds. He previously had two spells at Darlington and has also played for Doncaster and Carlisle United. He was Reds Player of the Season last term.

It has been confirmed that Queens are in discussions but as yet no signing has been made.
LAST CHANCE 30th May 2001

NEW SIGNING 25th May 2001
John Connolly has completed a bit more of the side he wants to challenge for the second division next season with the signing, this evening, of Arbroath left-back/central defender Jon Crawford. Six foot one, thirty one year old Crawford has been six years at Arbroath and made over 170 appearances after joining them from Arthurlie in 1995.

He was the Arbroath Player of the Season in 1998/99 and according to sources had formed a great partnership with Jim Thomson in the later part of this season, something we will be hoping will continue next season.
FRIENDLY ADDED 22nd May 2001
Another friendly match has been squeezed in to what will now be a very busy July. Workington Reds will play hosts to a Queen's side on the evening of Tuesday 17th July with a 7.30pm kick-off.

FRIENDLIES FINALISED 20th May 2001
The last of the pre-season matches have now been finalised with John Connolly confirming that his new look side will compete in the Annan Tournament over the weekend of 14th and 15th July 2001, they then follow that up with a trip across to Gateshead to take on local side Dunston Federation on the 21st July with Darlington at Palmerston on the 25th and Newcastle United on the 28th at Palmerston.

The full participants in the Annan Tournament have yet to be confirmed.
SPECIAL OCCASSION? 19th May 2001
You can now hire 'Queen of the South' tartan kilts from Douglas Anderson's shop in Dumfries, the tartan was originally the idea of former Queen's Chairman Norman Blount.
FIRST NEW SIGNING 16th May 2001
John Connolly has this morning made his first new signing for next season's campaign with the capture of former Queen's central defender Jim Thomson. JT, always a firm favourite with the Palmerston faithful, has signed up for two years and comes on freedom of contract after the completion of a two year deal at newly promoted Arbroath.

John Connolly rated JT as the best central defender in the second division last term and Peter Weatherson would endorse that view after the way in which JT contained the leagues top scorer in the Queens 1-0 victory nearing the end of the campaign.

JT put pen to paper last night on the very day that he also celebrated his thirtieth birthday, he made seventy seven appearances for the Doonhamers after joining from Stenhousemuir and was the Travel Club's Player of the Season in 1997/98.
ELEVEN FROM HEAVEN 12th May 2001
Stevie Mallan gets the chance in today's Scottish Sun to name his 'Eleven from Heaven', Marv manages to select eleven players from his time at Queens they are: David Mathieson, Des McKeown, David Lilley, George Rowe, Jim Thomson, Marc Cleeland, Stephen Leslie, Tommy Bryce, Jamie McAllister, Derek Townsley and Andy Thomson.

It's interesting reading even though some of it appears to be from a season or two ago.
SNIPPETS 11th May 2001
We note this week that Ted McMinn has moved on in his assistant managerial career as he leaves Conference side Southport with former Derby County team-mate Mark Wright, after being there for a relatively short period and joins Andy Thomson's former side Oxford United as the new men at the helm. Maybe not surprising news to all Queen's fans as programme editor Bruce Wright tipped the two to go on to greater things in a programme note in February this year when he said, "Don't be surprised if the Wright/McMinn double act move on to much higher things as already several Football League sides have shown an interest in the former Derby County team-mates".
RETAINED LIST 10th May 2001
With all the players now having been informed the list of those retained for next season has been made available and the fifteen are as follows:

Andy Aitken
Graeme Armstrong
Paddy Atkinson
Jamie Campbell
Graham Connell
Warren Hawke
Raymond McDonald
Des McKeown
Phil Nixon
John O'Neill
Geoff Paterson
Colin Scott
Jon Sunderland
Peter Weatherson
Willie Gibson

Stephen Pickering has been made an offer of a new contract but is a free agent so may take up other options whilst Alan Hogg was on a contract to the end of the season and will be invited back to pre-season training. John Connolly anticipates having a first team squad of twenty with six youngsters, he has five or six players targeted at present and hopes to secure the deals in the close season. There will be no participation in the Southern Counties competitions at all in season 2001/02.

Pre-season friendlies versus Darlington on 25th July and against Newcastle United on 28th July have been set up for Palmerston and a mini-tour of the North East may well happen, John Connolly would also like to take part in the Annan Tournament again following Queen's success in what was an enjoyable weekend last pre-season.
IFC MoM AND PLAYER OF THE SEASON 7th May 2001
Voting for the last game of the season has now been concluded and this week's winner calculated, 16 year old Willie Gibson puts the rest of the side to shame with a substitutes appearance of no more than thirty minutes in which he demonstrated enough skill and commitment to win himself the Man of the Match award by a large margin.

Second place went to the man who has scooped every player of the season award this year across all of the fan clubs, Peter Weatherson and third to the runner up in every player of the season competition Andy Aitken.

The final IFC Player of the Season league table has now been updated and the results finalised, Peter Weatherson tops the league by some way from Andy Aitken with Paddy Atkinson coming home in third place in a tight fight with Warren Hawke. The MoM link shows you all of the season end averages and the MoM winners for each individual match, you can also now download the spreadsheet that is used to calculate the weekly scores, this is a MS Excel spreadsheet and gives a summary of all players used and their scores in each match played.
