As was anticipated Arbroath gave Queen's a difficult game today in what was the hottest day of the summer so far in Dumfries. Both teams deserve great credit for producing what was at times good flowing and entertaining football and for producing an additional thirty minutes when even the fans were tiring.
In truth it looked for long periods that penalty kicks would decide the outcome as both sides attempted to put some sort of rhythm together through the midfield. Both defences were on top with JT marshalling his Lichties back four admirably, although it would seem that Jim took a knock as he did not re-appear for the second half.
At the other end Geordie Rowe commanded a rock solid home defence with CIS Insurance Man of the Match David Lilley looking particularly impressive and Andy Aitken looking a class apart again, both of these young players now playing with a confidence that belies their years and having obviously worked hard close season to develop themselves physically. New signing Alan Kerr has some class touches and when he reaches full match fitness will more than ably fit the bill as Jamie McAllisters replacement.
The midfield had the usual bite of Cleeland and Leslie, although Tam Bryce seemed less than appreciative of Steven Leslies' attention in the first half. Boyle and Harvey provided the width although it was not used very much and Bailey and Mallan the fire power up front, both looking lively and just begging for some clear chances.
Without doubt it would have been too much to ask for a team only constructed a couple of days ago to gel instantly, particularly in the blistering sunshine, however the core of last seasons team papered over the cracks and soon Messrs Harvey, Kerr and Findlay will slot in nicely and give the team that much needed balance of youth and experience.
