MATCH SUMMARY

The main plus point about today was that Brian Reid made his long-awaited comeback from injury and brought added composure to the back-line with David Craig also looking solid at left-back. The midfield saw Burns returning from injury with McLaughlin dropping to the bench. The front pairing favoured this week were Williams and Lyle. The bench was populated by McNiven - as usual!, new signing Bell, McLaughlin, Jaconelli and Barnard. The game itself was notable for only the smallest number of chances imaginable - Colin Scott did not have one serious effort to deal with all day whilst Craig Hinchcliffe again demonstrated a superb ability to produce miraculous saves by denying Bowey and Paton to keep the sheet clean. Early on the few chances that there were fell first to the Saints through a Ryan McCay cross that eluded Brian Reid but found the aggressive Stewart Kean twisting in mid-air to connect but only diverting the ball wide of the goal on ten minutes. On thirteen minutes we saw the best effort of the match and the best save of the match. A corner from Willie Gibson found its way to the edge of the box where Steve Bowey showed superb composure to curl and effort towards the top right hand corner of Hinhcliffe's goal, it looked a goal all the way but somehow the former Arbroath stopper managed to throw himself at the ball and push it just around the post to deny Bowser what had looked a peach of a goal as the following sequence of photographs show.

Things didn't exactly go flat after that as both sides harried each other with a number of particularly hard tackles coming in in equal measure from both sets of players, however that was about it as far as goal mouth action in the first half. The second half was little better, there was nothing between the sides with every opposing department closing the other down very effectively. The only effort of note being a free-kick by Eric Paton that Hinchcliffe again performed heroics with by throwing himself across goal to beat the effort round the post. And that was that - honestly. There was plenty of endeavour from both sides, plenty of effort and commitment it just cancelled itself out though and no-one really looked like winning.
