MATCH SUMMARY
Queens turned in their best home performance of the season and looked set to gain a precious three points only to be thwarted by some very shaky defending allowing the long distance visitors to 'steal' a victory in the last five minutes that would ensure that their journey home was a happy one.

Ian McCall set out his first selection as manager at home in a very familiar shape and line up to the one that caretaker manager Stuart Lovell had left off with just two weeks ago. The only changes being Lovell himself slipping into the five man midfield for the suspended Brian McColligan and Derek Lyle partnering John O'Neill upfront with David McNiven getting a seat on the bench.

Queens started brightly and only an acrobatic save by Stuart Garden in the visitors goal prevented a John O'Neill header from giving Queens the lead. We were soon to rue that missed chance though as Colin Scott refused to come for a ball running back to him as Chris Carr frantically signalled for his 'keeper to do so, by the time Scott decided to come he was beaten to the ball by David Winters who made no mistake with a clinical finish.

Fortunately though for Queens it only took a moment or two before level terms were restored as Stuart Lovell found Eric Paton in acres of space allowing the right sided player to fire a ball across goal that found John O'Neill at the back post and the hard working frontman smashed the ball home from six yards out.

The three man Dumfries defence did however seem intent on self destruct and a Jim Thomson headed pass back put Alex Burke in with a chance but the former Palmerston favourite was put off sufficiently by the out-rushing Colin Scott to shoot past the post. Queens were producing some decent football and a good move down the left between Gibson and Lyle saw the ball moved across the pitch to Eric Paton who in turn swung a cross ball to the far post where Derek Lyle could only head just past the upright.

The second half started with a bang - from the boot of Derek Lyle as a throw in was played into his path by Paul Burns and the striker unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner of the goal with Garden static on his line.

It was about this time that Willie Gibson produced some of his best and consistent play for some time as he absolutely ripped apart the right hand side of the visitors defence with Neil McDonald in particular being left for dead on a number of occasions. All of the hard work by Gibson came to nought though despite a great free kick that John O'Neill stretched a toe onto but Garden stretched an equally long finger onto to push around the post and a header from Lyle from a Gibson cross that just went past the post with the 'keeper beaten.

Then disaster struck as first Chris Carr and Gary Wood failed to clear a ball in the box and Staggies sub Gary McSwegan pounced on to equal the scores and then only a few minutes later another defensive error allowed John Rankin to fire through the home defence and past Scott to win the game to the disbelief of the home fans and the delight of the thirty hardy soles who had braved the treacherous weather conditions further north - reward indeed.

Hardy Ross County fans rewarded with a victory
Whilst Queens fans will undoubtedly be disappointed at the result they can take great heart from the performance as once again we saw a side who played for each other with commitment and purpose and really should have won the game. A continuation of this form will see them surely elevated from the bottom two without too much delay.
