MATCH SUMMARY
With six of the starting eleven coming from last season's squad it was a more familiar Queens side that awaited the respectable crowd that turned out today. Mathieson, Hodge, Aitken, Boyle, Caldwell and Weir all took to the field and in truth all performed well. Possibly the best performance from Andy Aitken who produced a comfortable and assured performance with Andy Martin in the heart of defence.

The first half was a relatively even affair, although Queen's made the best chances with Peter Weatherson having two clear cut chances that he just didn't quite convert, although Mark Weir joined in too with a thunderous left footed drive which cleared the perimeter of the ground.

The second half saw the Doonhamers pick up the tempo and Gateshead were penned back into their half for long periods. The goal that sealed the match was scored by Peter Weatherson and came in the seventy fifth minute when Sunderland played Weatherson through for the young striker to finish calmly and accurately, leaving the 'keeper without any chance.

Queen's could have doubled their advantage just before the end as Tony Nelson broke through but could only finish with a weak shot which the goalkeeper easily dealt with. However Nelson could well have been the villain as he inexplicably passed the ball direct to Gateshead's Edgcumbe when in possession in midfield. Gateshead pressed forward and were almost rewarded from the resulting corner but for the reactions of David Mathieson who managed to paw the ball onto the bar as it travelled across the goalmouth.

Manager John Connolly will be well satisfied with this performance as the team now appear to be gelling quite quickly. With only one friendly left, next Saturday at Penrith, the timing looks just right,
