MATCH SUMMARY
What would appear to be almost the first choice starting eleven took to the field tonight to face a generally youthful Newcastle side. Notable in the Newcastle ranks were former Carlisle and Hibs goalkeeper Tony Caig, Michael Chopra, who spent time on loan at both Nottingham Forest and Watford last season and Jamie McClen who has featured in the Newcastle first amongst others.

Queens started brightly and it was Steve Bowey first to show with a header from a Tommy English cross that should have troubled Caig much more. Then almost out of nothing Newcastle took the lead as Scot Marshall fired in an unstoppable effort from outside the box to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Queens though, unusually shooting towards the Portland Road end in the first half, were soon back playing some neat combinations in midfield with Gary Wood being set up on a number of occasions but failing to convert despite a couple of close calls.

JT clears danger early on

Bagan breaks forward
The half ended with Queens still pressing and Bowser heading over the bar again. Other notable incidents being a worrying tackle on Steve Bowey by Steven Taylor that looked ominous but after some work by Kenny Crichton on the touchline the captain returned to the fray.

The second half, as on Saturday against Dunfermline started disastrously as within two minutes Queens conceded a goal and a disappointing one to lose at that as a free kick wide right took a deflection off the defensive wall to wrong foot Samson and nestle in the far corner with the 'keeper helpless.

McNiven and Bagan combine
However an instant response from Queens was forthcoming as Brian McColligan blasted just over the bar within seconds of the re-start. Ten minutes into the half and Bagan and McNiven exchanged a few neat passes to set up the former who could only send the ball across the face of the goal with no takers in place. Iain Scott then took the chance to make some changes replacing Steve Bowey with Paul Burns and Gary Wood with Willie Gibson. This allowed Brian McLaughlin to take up a striking role with Gibson wide left and David Bagan to move into the centre of the midfield.

The game was killed as contest on 63 minutes as a corner from the left was met by the head of an unchallenged Lewis Guy to make it 3-0.

Samson helpless as Guy's header bullets past his outstretched hand
Queens made two final substitutions with Stephen Payne and Paul Hilland coming on for David Bagan and Brian McLaughlin. This allowed Tommy English to move into the centre left of midfield with Hilland going to left-back and Stephen Payne to take up a striking role which was to pay off handsomely within three minutes in a carbon copy of his goal versus Threave Rovers just a week ago. It was the goal of the evening as he struck a low curling effort from twenty-five yards around a defender and into the bottom corner of the net.

For a while after the goal the game developed more of an edge to it and David McNiven could have pulled a second goal back as he broke through on goal but a cruel bounce of the ball as he turned the defender who was marking him made it impossible for his shot to do anything else but fly over the bar.

It was a good match played competitively with all of the players looking keen to impress.
