MATCH SUMMARY
John Connolly made only one change to his starting sixteen at Palmerston this afternoon, this saw the inclusion of Willie Gibson on the bench with Eric Paton losing out. The starting eleven saw two changes as Derek Lyle took up Patons spot on the right side of midfield and John O'Neill sat on the bench with Peter Weatherson starting alongside Sean O'Connor up front.

The match was poor fare with Alloa looking like the relegation material they are and Queens unable to convert their dominance in possession into goals. The first half was particularly poor with very little to note, a Colin Scott fluffed clearance inside four minutes that opened up a chance for Robert Sloan, the on-loan Hearts striker, went wide thankfully for the Queens 'keeper.

McLaughlin wins an aerial battle with Bowser looking on

Sean O'Connor made the first Queens chance of the half as he wriggled clear of his marker on the edge of the box and swung round on goal, his effort though was weak as he over stretched himself to connect with the ball. Brian McLaughlin then created an opening down the left as he skipped over a potentially heavy challenge and headed into the right hand side of the box, his low powerful cross beat everyone including Sean O'Connor by a whisker as it flew across the goals.

Jim Thomson heads goalward from a corner

That was about it, apart from a few niggly moments, until a couple of minutes before half-time when Peter Weatherson was obstructed on the edge of the Alloa box by Derek Ferguson, the result of the free-kick was a drive back goalward by Steve Bowey that went narrowly past the post.

HALF TIME 0-0

The second half started without any changes to the starting line-up, however within the first minute of the half Alloa had won a penalty as Richard Walker went won in the box as he ran across a couple of Queens defenders, despite hot protests from the Queens defence the penalty stood, Colin Scott though enhanced his reputation as a first class penalty stopper by this week diving to his left to block the effort away. The ball went straight up field through Sean O'Connor but the big front man was unable to produce a shot before the ball was knocked back to Evans in the Alloa goal.

John Connolly then made two changes with John O'Neill and Paul Burns coming on for Peter Weatherson and Brian McColligan respectively. Three minutes later and Queens had their best effort of the match as Derek Lyle cut inside on the right and unleashed a curling effort that crashed back off the bar with the 'keeper well beaten. Queens were the dominant side but it seemed that every time a cross or pass was made it crashed off an opponent.

On seventy six minutes Alloa took the lead as a free kick on the left hand side wasn't properly cleared, it eventually bobbled to the edge of the box where defender Steve Thomson drove home his fourth goal of the season and his second against Queens this term.

John Connolly then made his final substitution as he put on Willie Gibson for the last fifteen minutes in place of Derek Lyle, the change though made little difference as Alloa had resorted to full-defensive mode by that time.

Scott makes a superb save to deny Alloa a late second

All in all it was a disappointing display with Queens only looking interested for short periods in the match and Alloa, surprisingly, looking even less interested. The result was an important one for them as their relegation rivals Ross County also recorded a win and it keeps the two locked together on points in the second relegation spot.

Finally congratulations to Falkirk who formally wrapped up the title today, worthy winners and deserving of a place in the top league. Commiserations to Arbroath whose fate was decided at the same time as Falkirk and will play in the Second Division next term.
