MATCH SUMMARY
Queens produced a workmanlike performance against a strong Workington side this evening that saw the Dumfries men eventually leave as 2-0 victors.

The starting formation tonight was 4-4-2 with all the main partnerships for the season ahead in place for Queens with Thomson and Aitken, O'Neill and Connell and Connolly and Weatherson all paired.

The first half saw Queens controlling the game but not making any significant chances other than the odd goalmouth scramble, Workington being confined to a few chances on the break and one solo effort that saw former Queens man Craig Potts pick up the ball just inside the Queen's half and make a diagonal run to the edge of the box before sending a curling effort just past the post.

First half action

The second half was a more lively affair as the wind picked up with the tempo and a few substitutes were made by both sides Workington introducing former Queens youth player John Wharton and Queens bringing on McGhee, Patterson and McKeown as the formation switched to 3-5-2.

It was Workington that made the most of the conditions and looked to be more in control for a good spell in the second half, but as the homesters tired Queens moved up a gear and eventually some real chances came.

Mark Patterson again showed that he has an eye for goal as he broke through in the seventieth minute before beating the keeper but seeing the ball rebound off the post. Then within five minutes John O'Neill had the miss of the match as he blasted over the bar from all of seven yards with the keeper posted missing.

Eventually though the goal came as Stuart Connolly made a bee line into the box and was crudely upended on the edge of the box by a Reds defender. John O'Neill took the penalty and finished it comfortably (see below)

Queens continued to push but Workington were also threatening and a couple of timely tackles by Alan Gray spared Campbell any real work.

The scoring was completed with only a couple of minutes to go when substitute Stephen Pickering saw his shot deflected and bounce over the body of the helpless Reds keeper.
