MATCH SUMMARY

There was a mini-overhaul to the side tonight following the narrow defeat at Dens on Saturday, Jamie MacDonald was swapped out for Stephen Grindlay in goal. The centre of defence saw a brand new pairing in Jim Lauchlan and Neil McGowan in place of Andy Aitken and Liam Atkin. Whilst across the middle of the park Steve Tosh was assigned to the right hand berth with John O'Neill just inside Gilmour on the left at the expense of Paul Burns and Neil Scally respectively. The first action of note came in the 8th minute when good play from Sean O'Connor won a corner on the right. An Eric Paton kick from the quadrant found O'Connor in the middle of the box but the big striker could only head over the top. When Sean O'Connor was penalised for what looked like a good challenge at one end and then from the resultant free kick Neil McGowan suffered a similarly harsh judgement on the edge of the visitors penalty box it looked like things were not going to go Queens' way. As it turned out Steven Masterton stepped up and struck the free-kick straight through the wall and the 'keeper to put Queens a goal down with less than a quarter hour played.

Minutes later Stephen Dobbie was presented with a golden opportunity as he found himself the recipient of a ball worked back into the centre of the box following a scramble on the bye-line, unfortunately Dobbs just couldn't keep the ball down and the chance went abegging.

Queens tactic of a long ball from the undoubted impressive boot of Stephen Grindlay wasn't really getting them anywhere and it was Clyde who almost increased their lead on twenty minutes as another Masterton free kick evaded everyone and everything in the box until it fortunately bounced off the heel of Neil McGowan and away to safety. Yet Queens had to persevere with the long ball tactic as they were without any width down the right and had a well shackled Brian Gilmour on the left as his former team mates managed to snuff out his threat to the extent that he was replaced at half-time by David Bingham. When introduced, Bingham took up a forward role alongside O'Connor and Dobbie. John O'Neill was moved wide right and Steve Tosh stepped inside to where he appeared more effective. Queens certainly appeared more purposeful and within six minutes of the restart had the ball in the net following yet another Grindlay goal clearance, however the referee's assistant had flagged for 'goalscorer' O'Neill being offside and his effort didn't count. A very intelligently worked throw in between Dobbs and Bingham almost lead to a goal as the on-loan Gretna striker received the ball in the box before heading toward goal only to be thwarted at the last second as he was about to strike.

Queens were certainly playing better football and having more possession but they didn't look like scoring. With fifteen minute left to play a series of unfortunate decisions were enough to see David Bingham booked for dissent. Chis made his last throw of the dice with twelve minutes left as he introduced Jamie Mole for Stephen Dobbie and Andy Aitken for the tiring Neil McGowan. Clyde were by this time more than happy to play deep and protect their lead which they were doing very competently. Queens' best effort came with just eight minutes left as Steve Tosh received the ball in the middle of the park following a corner kick, he looked up, squared himself and thrashed an effort through a ruck of players towards goal from thirty yards. The crossbar was the only thing that got in the way and the ball crashed down off the underside of the bar, onto the line and back out of the goalmouth. That was as close as we got all night. Despite some frantic efforts in the last few minutes it was a case of far too little far too late for a disjointed Queens side who failed to lift their sizable travelling support all evening.
