MATCH SUMMARY
On what was undoubtedly the best day of the year in Annan, in terms of the weather, Queens put on a first class performance to send the visiting fans back home to Dumfries more than happy. The line-up today was extremely strong, the only first team regulars missing were Colin Scott, who again injured himself during the warm up and Jim Thomson who was just back from an overseas trip but was present at the game. In for Scott was Stuart Robertson and for Thomson Derek Allan. A familiar face was in the Livingston side as former Queens 'free' John McCaig lined up in the heart of their defence and on the bench was reserve team coach Allan Preston who last played competitive football for Queens whilst on loan from St Johnstone in season 1999/2000 before a serious injury put paid to his playing days.

The game itself started 15 minutes late to allow Livingston to warm up after they were held up on the way to the game. Queens immediately pressed forward with Lyle and Weatherson resuming the terrific partnership that they had developed toward the latter part of last term, indeed it was a combination of the two that opened the scoring in just fourteen minutes as Nellie played a ball through the defence in front of Lyle and the former Partick striker made no mistake with an angular drive from fifteen yards to beat 'Fernando' all ends up. Lyle turns away after opening the scoring

Lyle almost got through again five minutes after his goal but this time the Livvie 'keeper was quick to react and met the ball just before Lyle to clear the danger, it was then the turn of Peter Weatherson to come close as Joe McAlpine made an impressive run down the wing, he sent a ball in to Nellie and with his back to goal he managed to turn swiftly but was met by both the 'keeper and a defender before he could get a clear sight of the sticks.

Just as it looked like the half-time score was set to stay at 1-0 Steve Bowey burst down the right and crossed a ball onto the head of Peter Weatherson, Nellie made no mistake with his bulleted header giving the Livvie 'keeper no chance.

HALF TIME 2-0

The second half started with Livingston being more involved in the match and making a couple of chances although only one forced Robertson into a serious save as he collected a long range effort high to his left.
A purposeful midfield Queens however soon re-asserted their dominance and with only ten second half minutes on the clock John O'Neill won a corner after beating his man and making the bye-line, the corner by Joe McAlpine found its way onto the head of Derek Allan around fifteen yards out and his looping header cleared the 'keeper to nestle in the back of the net and to make it two goals in two games for the central defender who now shares the pre-season top scorers accolade with Peter Weatherson.

The youngsters of Livingston came back into the match for a short spell but didn't have the strength in depth to make their pressure stick, at the other end Andy Aitken found himself with a few yards of space and took advantage of them to close in on goal and lob the ball goalward, the 'keeper was off his line but did manage to get back far enough to collect Andy's lob.
With the game safe at 3-0 some changes were made to the Queens side, on came Sean O'Connor for Derek Lyle and Eric Paton for Alan Gray, shortly after Brian McLaughlin made his Queens debut as he replaced Peter Weatherson, who had picked up a couple of knocks during the match.

Eric Paton didn't leave it too long to create a favourable impression with the Dumfries fans as he strode forward down the right hand side, cut in and lifted the ball over the 'keeper and into the net to make it 4-0 on seventy six minutes, a classy finish.

Nellie gets the magic sponge treatment
Some more changes followed with Brian McColligan coming on for Steve Bowey on seventy eight minutes and Ross Currie replacing Paddy Atkinson on eighty five, the final change saw Jon Crawford replace Stuart Robertson in goals for the last few minutes, although it is doubtful whether Jon managed a touch of the ball.

All in all this was a very good performance by the doonhamers against what was a youthful Livvie side and sets up an intriguing clash tomorrow as Queens play Kilmarnock in the final of the competition.
