In what turned out to be blizzard conditions at Firhill Queens played a full part in a cracking game, unfortunately however, and despite scoring four goals the doonhamers still managed to lose five and are now seven points adrift at the foot of the table as Stenhousemuir gained a point from Stranraer.
The match started at full speed and remained that way throughout as the nine goals rained in. Queens took the play to Partick early on and demonstrated that they were determined to secure a precious victory. First Allan Preston from his favoured midfield position sent in a thunderous shot which went just over, then Stevie Mallan had a couple of efforts, one saved one just wide.
At the other end David Mathieson made his long awaited, but somewhat surprise return, replacing current player of the season leader John Hillcoat between the posts. However Mathieson did show early on that he can still be counted as one of the best shot stoppers in the league with an excellent effort to push away a Lennon free kick.
The scoring was opened in just eighteen minutes when Denis Boyle collected the ball some way out, turned and struck an unstoppable twenty five yard effort into the top corner. The Donegal diamond was shining today as he could so easily have notched a further two goals within the next ten minutes but had to watch as his efforts went past the post and then just over.
Partick are a good side and demonstrated how deadly they can be by equalising in the thirty ninth minute and then breaking from a Queens corner in the forty third to snatch a 2-1 interval lead.
The second half started with renewed effort by Queens and they shocked the home support by reversing the score with strikes from Stevie Mallan and a header from new signing Graham Duncan in the fifty sixth and sixty third minute respectively.
Queens looked to be holding their own but then an eleven minute spell saw Partick regain and extend their lead with goals from Lindau, Craig and Jacobs to make the score 5-3. Queens were not out of it though and within three minutes had brought the score back to 5-4 with a thirty yard Allan Preston strike. That however was to be that, as Queens just could not make the final effort to tie the scores.
Additional agony was piled on as Queens seem now to have a weekly competition to be the "Red Card Recipient", this week it goes to Warren Hawke for a second bookable offence two minutes from time.
Please also note that the game scheduled for next Saturday versus league leaders Clyde has been postponed and will now take place on the fourteenth of March at 7.30pm.
