Season Review | 31st May 2008 |
It's a short pre-season this term so we will publish double episodes in our traditional 'Review of the Season'. As usual it is produced by our away day match reporter Ewan Lithgow. It is a season of two halves with everything from January on going better than could have ever been imagined. Click on the logo to the right and re-live the memories of the greatest season in the history of Queen of the South.

Challenge Cup draw | 29th May 2008 |
Not the best of draws for us in the opening round of the Challenge Cup which was made at Hampden this afternoon. Queens are away to Berwick Rangers with the tie to take place at Shielfield Park on Saturday, 26th July.

Three sign extensions | 29th May 2008 |
Andy Aitken put pen to paper on a one year's extension to his existing contract this evening. Yesterday two of his clubmates, Jimmy McQuilken and Jim Thomson, did likewise, and that will take our skipper through to his Testimonial Year. Seven players left the club at the close of the season which was extended owing to the Cup Final. Jamie MacDonald and John Stewart (on loan from Hearts and Falkirk) return to their respective clubs while 'Penalty King', John O'Neill, (who was our only 'part time' player) has been linked with a coaching role at Stirling Albion.
It's no secret that Eric Paton is moving to Dundee, as he signed a pre-contract deal with the Dens Parkers back in January while Jim Lauchlan, Brian Gilmour and Robert Campbell have been released. We wish them all the best for the future! Bill Goldie |

Internet Fan Club Player of the Season | 26th May 2008 |
Whilst Jim Thomson took first place following the voting for the Man of the Match in the Scottish Cup Final a solid second place from Sean O'Connor ensured that he retained his position at the top of the Internet Fan Club Player of the Season League Table. Over 100,000 individual votes were cast over the course of this season and every single competetive game was taken into account. It's a remarkably consistent effort from Sean who has led the league table from mid-August.
Previous winners of the award have been, Neil Scally - 2006-07, Richie Barnard - 2005-06, Jim Thomson - 2004-05, Steve Bowey - 2003-04, Alan Gray - 2002-03, Andy Aitken - 2001-02, Peter Weatherson - 2000-01 and winner of the first ever IFC Player of the Season Warren Hawke in 1999-00. All of the individual votes have been added to the Latest Report section and the Player of the Season League Table has also been completed. Thanks for voting. FOOTBALLERS LIVES | 23rd May 2008 |
Craig Reid must really rue the day that he played for Stirling Albion against Stranraer in that early round of the Scottish Cup. Even though Stirling won 6-0 he was 'cup-tied' for the remainder of the competition and can now only cheer his team-mates on in their moment of glory at Hampden tomorrow.
Next in line |
What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in? The most exciting game I've ever witnessed was the Queen of the South v Aberdeen semi-final tie last month--even though I wasn't playing. It was a real roller-coaster of a match. Biggest for me on a personal basis was playing for Celtic in the Youth Cup semi-final and beating St Mirren 2-0 at Hampden. And turning out for Scotland against England in the Under-17 European Championships comes a close second. What's been your most embarrasing moment in football? I was only 15 and playing for Celtic against Rangers at Ibrox when I conceded an amazing own goal. The ball was going over my head, I tried to clear it with an overhead kick but it flew into the top corner of the net like a rocket. Had it been at the other end of the park it would have been a 'wonder strike'. Nevertheless we still won the game 7-1. Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present? Stephen Dobbie. Being a defender I'm up against him quite a lot at training and he's a hard man to mark. He's a different class, has a great touch and so much raw ability. If you could play for any club in the world who would it be? Manchester United. They're a massive club with a superb stadium and I've supported them since I was a youngster. They play in the Premiership, which I rate the best league in the world, and I was down to see them against Roma just recently. What's your favourite film or video? I like all the Rocky films and have the box set. I'm particularly fond of numbers 3 and 4. Sylvester Stallone is great and just watching them gets me pepped up for a game. Your favourite food and drink? Pasta. I eat it every single day of the week and most days whenever I get home from training. I enjoy it along with a cool can of Irn Bru. And the favourite item in your wardrobe? Nothing in particular but I'm prone to wearing All Saints jumpers and have them in every colour imaginable. If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be? I've never been to the USA but I'd love to go and visit the likes of Vegas, New York and Miami. If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be? Cheryl Cole. I think Ashley was very stupid to cheat on her. Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it? Yes. I enjoy logging on to get all the latest info on the club and who's getting slagged off on 'Footballers Lives'. This ends 'Footballers Lives' for the season. Hope you all enjoyed the series. Here's hoping for a great result tomorrow. Bill Goldie |

FOOTBALLERS LIVES | 16th May 2008 |
Scott Robertson has now been with us at Palmerston for five seasons, having joined from Troon Kay Park. An Ayrshire lad, Scott impressed as a youngster and Chairman, David Rae, named him as his 'Man of the Match' in a Youth Cup tie against Celtic at Parkhead a few years ago. To date Scott has made 38 First Team appearances and one of his best was only recently, in out last home fixture of the season against Dundee.
Powering through in the middle of the park |
What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in? My First Team debut for Queens against Airdrie when I was only 17. We won 1-0 and it was our first win of the season. 'Burnsy' scored our winner late in the game. My biggest was playing against Celtic at Parkhead. It was in the BP Youth Cup and it was just great to play there even though we were well beaten. What's been your most embarrasing moment in football? I was only 15 and playing for Queens in a friendy down at Barrow. I was brought on as a sub but stood on the ball and fell flat on my face. I felt a complete idiot--a real diddy. Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present? At the moment it has to be 'Dobbs'. Some of the stuff he does is unbelieveable. But my tip for the future is wee Bob Harris--I think he's a great player. If you could play for any club in the world who would it be? No question about it--Manchester United. I've supported them for as long as I can remember. They play terriffic attacking football and it would be an honour to play in the same team as Ronaldo. What's your favourite film or video? Anchor Man. It's hilarious, the funniest movie I've ever seen. Ron Burgandy is awsome--a living legend. Your favourite food and drink? For food I'd go for a nice pasta during the playing season, but you can't beat a visit to the 'chippie' in close season. And for drink, a nice bottle of Irn Bru would do me fine. And the favourite item in your wardrobe? I've a pair of real smart white shoes and when I've got them on I feel I can dance like John Travolta. But, having said that, anyone dancing beside Ryan McCann looks good. If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be? Magaluf. But it would be lonely alone and I'd want my mates with me. If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be? Carmen Electra. But I'd probably be eaten alive. Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it? It's actually quite good. I like to read the match reports and I also enjoy the videos. Next Friday our featured player is Craig Reid. Bill Goldie |

New signing | 14th May 2008 |
Queens made their first signing of the new season this morning when they snapped up Stewart Kean from St Mirren on a pre-contract agreement. The 25-year-old attacker had been much sought after by other clubs and was at Love Street for three and a half years having joined the 'Buddies' from Ayr United.
Said manager Gordon Chisholm, "I'm delighted to welcome Stewart on board and I'm sure he'll be an asset to the club". Added Stewart himself, after signing on the dotted line, "I'm really pleased to be joining Queen of the South. They're a team on the way forward and I'm only sorry I'll be watching the Cup Final from the Stand instead of being out there on the park. I've played at Palmerston several times and have always found it a nice park to play on". Chairman David Rae welcomes Stewart to Palmerston Bill Goldie |

From best to worst | 12th May 2008 |
This campaign has probably been the best in Queens history but 19 years ago - 13th May the Doonhamers completed their worst-ever season with a 6-0 defeat at home to Kilmarnock who despite their victory were also relegated. We won only two games out of 39 and finished with 10 points - 24 behind Killie.

FOOTBALLERS LIVES | 9th May 2008 |
Today in the spotlight we have Brian Gilmour. 'Gilly', as he is affectionately known, joined us from Clyde last summer having spent several years as a youth at Ibrox. He has played for Scotland in Europe at Under-21 level and also represented his country in the Under-20's World Cup in Canada. The tricky, diminutive winger made 27 first team appearances for us over the past season but managed only two goals. Both, however, were against the top sides in the Division, Hamilton Accies and Dundee.
Gilly's in the mist |
What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in? It's got to be the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen even though I didn't get beyond the subs bench. It was a great occasion and the atmosphere was electric. It was a exciting game just to watch and the Queens' fans did us proud. My biggest matches were in Europe playing for the Scotland Under-21 side but I couldn't single out any particular game. What's been your most embarrasing moment in football? I've been lucky so far and I can't recall anything too bad. Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present? 'Dobbs'. He has tremendous natural ability--all top drawer stuff. He gets my vote. If you could play for any club in the world who would it be? Barcelona. It would be great just to be on the same park as some of those guys. What's your favourite film or video? Scarface with Al Pacino. Your favourite food and drink? I like all kinds of Italian food especially Pasta dishes. As for drink, a nice cool glass of water does me fine as I'm 'tea-total'. But believe that if you like! And the favourite item in your wardrobe? Certainly not that black Hugo Boss shirt all the other lads are on about. It must be nearly worn out by now. I'm more for the casual look--tee-shirts and jeans. If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be? Lying on a beach in the Bahamas soaking up the sun. If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be? Jessica Alba. Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it? Yes, I'm on it quite often. It's gives a lot of info and I enjoy it. Next Friday our featured player is Scott Robertson. Bill Goldie |

DVD News | 7th May 2008 |
Queen of the South are delighted to be offering their fans the opportunity to relive one of the finest moments in the club's history. Released Friday the 9th May, the Hampden Heroes DVD features the club's recent 4-3 win over Aberdeen in the Semi-Final of the Scottish Cup.
Chairman David Rae said "It's not only the greatest game of football that Queens have ever been involved in, but it's one of the most entertaining games I've ever seen. It was a fairytale of a game for Queens fans, and this fairytale has a happy ending!" The DVD, produced in association with local company Domino Entertainments, is the club's first venture into DVD and only the second into visual media - the first being the Doonhamer's Day Out VHS featuring the build up to the Challenge Cup Final match against Falkirk in 1997. That was a smash hit with fans, and Hampden Heroes looks set to follow in it's success. Business Development Manager James Rutherford said "I've been working on developing the club's media output, and to be able to have a game like this as the first venture is fantastic." The DVD features the full match, highlights and some unseen extras from the players and coaches. It is available at just £12.99, and can be purchased directly from Palmerston by phone or in person, as well as from Domino entertainments on the Whitesands. Why not pick up a copy whilst purchasing your tickets for the next big day at Hampden - here's hoping the club will be producing another victorious DVD for that game. Jamie Rutherford |
Sam's the Man | 6th May 2008 |
Over the years Queen of the South have been extremely fortunate to have had so many loyal fans of long-standing supporting them through 'thick and thin'. And one of those is Sam Campbell who celebrated his 93rd birthday at his Newbridge home today. One of his oldest friends Andy Frazer (91) was due to pay him a visit as the two nonagenarians used to sit side-by-side in the stand at Palmerston for many years.
Alas, Andy died only last week which put paid to any reunion but being a retired farmer Sam had known David Rae for many years and when the Chairman himself popped in to say 'many happy returns' and present him with a Queens' scarf, the two of them had a right good 'chin-wag' and discussed our chances of beating Rangers in the final. Club captain, Jim Thomson, also looked in on his way home from training and handed over a Queens' book. In his younger days Sam farmed at Low Lann, Tynron, near Moniaive but retired 28 years ago to settle at his present abode on the outskirts of the town. Last season was the first he'd missed for 80 years and only because the doctor forbade him from attending owing to his troublesome knees. But the old campaigner insists, "I've been a season ticket holder at Palmerston for about 50 years so I'm hoping to be back again next season". And, with a wry smile asked the Chairman to reserve his 'old seat' for him saying, "I haven't given up yet. My father attended games at Palmerston until he was 92 and I'm proud to say that I've now bettered his record". Sam has many memories of days gone by and recalls, "My first ever visit was as a 13-year-old to watch them play Nithsdale Wanderers. I soon became a 'regular' and stood in 'Jim Jolly's Coo Shed'--the old covered enclosure. There are so many games I still remember like our first ever match in Division One when we beat the mighty Glasgow Celtic. McStay and their big centre-forward McGrory were playing but we won 3-2 with Bell (2) and McGowan scoring". Another famous victory that springs to mind was the day in January, 1937 when Queens knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Cup. Interrupted our host in anticipation, "Yes, I remember that one too!. And it was in the First Round. Laurie Cumming put a nice pass through to John Renwick who lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Jerry Dawson's head and into the net and we won 1-0". One of his heros back then was 'penalty king', Joe Tulip and Sam claims he can never recall him ever missing from the spot. Our previous sojurn in the Scottish Cup semi-finals against Rangers was another he was keen to talk about and Sam stressed, "I was there as well along with thousands of others who travelled up by train, bus or a car--if they were lucky enough to have one. Jackie Brown scored for us in the first half but late in the game there was a mix-up between our keeper, Roy Henderson and Dougie Sharpe and Rutherford's corner kick finished up in the net". And yet another he remembers was the day Queens came back from 3-1 down to beat Hearts 4-3 with a late goal from Wattie Rothera. But Sam admits that the recent cup win over Aberdeen beats them all. "I have lots of happy memories of Queen of the South" he concluded. "And I'll support them until the day I die!. But that cup-tie against Aberdeen just about gave me heart failure as goals were flying in from everywhere. I had five friends in to watch it on the TV and they all enjoyed it so much I'll probably have them back knocking at my door for Rangers in the Final. They're not unbeatable and I think we've got a good chance. It's only 11 against 11. "To even reach the Scottish Cup Final is an achievement and is great for the town of Dumfries and the publicity it has brought has certainly 'put us on the map'. My nurse has never been to a football match in her life and she's going. I've been at Hampden for a Scotland v England international with 150,000 there, and still remember what it feels like. They'll be nothing like that on the 24th of April but they'll be over 50,000 and I only wish I could have been one of them. But you never know. "This season is as good as any I remember. Well done to all concerned and all I can say is good luck!" Sam is flanked by David Rae (right) and skipper Jim Thomson. The Chairman presented him with a new Queens' scarf and Jim handed over a recent book produced by the club entitled 'Memories of the Modern Era'. Burnley match confirmed | 5th May 2008 |
Gordon Chisholm confirmed today that the Queen of the South v Burnley friendly match will go ahead at Palmerston on Saturday, 19th July, as part of the English side's three game mini-tour of Scotland. Said the manager, "I'd a couple of things to sort out when I got back from Spain, but I've spoken to Owen Coyle and everything's OK. They lie mid-way in the English Championship League so it will be a good test for us before the new season kicks off. However I don't think Owen will be too happy at losing 5-0 at Crystal Palace on Saturday".
Added the manager, "We all enjoyed our wee jaunt to Spain. We trained, played some golf and had a laugh together--it proved a really good bonding session. But now all the hard work for the Cup Final starts in earnest. We intend to play a couple of 'closed door' training games, probably against Hearts and St Mirren, as it's important we keep our match fitness up. But we'll all be 'up for it' come the 24th May. Club Policies Update | 4th May 2008 |
Each season, as part of the clubs commitment to best practice and continuous improvement, the board of directors review operations, systems and working methods at Palmerston prior to taking part in an SFA audit of such items.
The ultimate purpose of this is to ensure that we are adhering to the operational standards and guidleines laid down by the governing bodies of our game - UEFA and the SFA - as part of National Club Licensing. This process lead to the recent floodlighting improvements at Palmerston. The directors have recently agreed a number of revisions and additions to club policies and charters and, as part of this process, determined that they should be shared with supporters and visitors to Palmerston Park via the club web-site. Some will also be displayed at various points around the ground and in club literature. The policies and charters in question are: These can be found in the 'Policies' Section of this web-site. A winner again | 3rd May 2008 |
There was a surprise for Gordon Chisholm at Glasgow Airport yesterday when he alighted from his flight back from Malaga. Waiting for him was a representative from Irn Bru to present him with the 'Manager of the Month' award for April. That's the third time in four months that Gordon has lifted the trophy. A tremendous achievement even though the February honour was shared with Alex Rae. Bill Goldie |

FOOTBALLERS LIVES | 2nd May 2008 |
The joy on John Stewart's face as he slammed home what proved to be the winner in the Scottish Cup semi-final three weeks ago was there for all to see. Not only had he made history for Queen of the South but he'd also proved a point to Aberdeen boss, Jimmy Calderwood, who'd released him 18 months earlier. John took some pelters from the 'Dons' fans while 'warming' up but it was he who had the last laugh. After leaving Pittodrie he moved to Falkirk and then on loan to St Johnstone but Gordon Chisholm snapped him up on another loan deal in the January 'window' and his time at Palmerston has been most eventful for the striker.
The magic moment |
What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in? An easy question! Without a doubt scoring that winner at Hampden against Aberdeen. Before kick-off I said to 'Dobbs' and wee Brain Gilmour that if I scored I'd do an action replay of Jean-Claude Darcheville's now famous salute to the fans. So I did! As for my biggest game--another easy one. That very same Scottish Cup semi-final. The atmosphere and the support of the all the Queens' fans made it a wonderful occasion and one I'll never forget. What's been your most embarrasing moment in football? When I was at Aberdeen I was once sent on as a first-half substitute and scored what turned out to be the winner. But I was substituted myself during the second half in what you might call a 'double substitution' and never 'lived it down'. Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present? 'Dobbs'. He's a great finisher and that says it all. If you could play for any club in the world who would it be? Barcelona. I'd love the sun, the sangri and yes--the big money. An added bonus would be playing with all those big stars. What's your favourite film or video? Braveheart starring Mel Gibson. I'm very proud to be Scottish. Your favourite food and drink? Any kind of pizza. For drink--amoretta. And the favourite item in your wardrobe? An Aberdeen top signed by all the Celtic players after playing against them. It takes pride of place in my wardrobe. If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be? Ibiza--the weather, the beach and that fabulous night life is heaven. If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be? That sultry singer Shakira. Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it? Like 'Scal', I'm not into computers so I never see what's being said. Sorry! Next Friday our featured player is Brian Gilmour. Bill Goldie |
A sad farewell | 29th April 2008 |
We were all sorry to hear of the death of one of our oldest supporters, Andy Frazer from Dalbeattie. According to his daughter, Anne, he passed away peacefully last night and it was so sad that he'll miss the Cup Final--a match he'd been so looking forward to. Andy was 91 and due to visit one of his oldest friends, Sam Campbell, to celebrate his 93rd birthday next week.
