MATCH SUMMARY
A new look Queen's side defeated a strong Whitehill Welfare team by four goals to one this afternoon to progress to the final of the Scottish Brewers Cup where they will face Annan Athletic who later in the day defeated St Mirren by three goals to one.

Whilst the team had a new look about it there were many familiar faces and not too many of the new signings on show. The familiar faces were all of the promising youngsters from last season, Caldwell, Weir, Robison, Stewart, Paterson, McCaig, Boyle and Muirhead. A familiar face returning to Queen's was Goalkeeper Rab McColm who shared the duties today with youngster Tommy Muirhead.

The match itself was, as expected reasonably quiet for the first 45 minutes, although Queens did have a Brian Caldwell 'goal' disallowed after only ten minutes as the nearside linesman pulled play back for an earlier offence.

The second half however saw a much livelier Queens performance which was prompted by the scoring of a Whitehill goal from a corner as the Queens defence failed to respond to the flighted ball. Three minutes later and it was back level as Mark Weir picked the ball up just inside the Welfare half and made an impressive, defence splitting, run through the middle of the Whitehill back four before firing the ball past the advancing keeper and into the back of the net.

Six minutes further on and Weir proved that he was in the mood today as he pounced on a sloppy back pass to tap the ball into an empty net at the far post as the keeper made a vain attempt to scramble across the goal.

Queens were in total control at this stage and it was no surprise when Whitehill conceded a penalty with the bringing down of the lively Brian Caldwell in the box. The penalty taker was as expected Mark Weir and he confidently secured his hat trick.

The final action of the match was the score being extended to four one with Brian Caldwell this time the scorer, again capitalising on sloppy defending.

Whilst the side was youthful the performance was assured, the new players seemed to blend well and the on field discipline was exemplary with the players seeming extremely focused and aware of their roles.

So tomorrow it's the clash that the fans wanted, the two local teams which will ensure a healthy crowd for the final which kicks off at 4.00pm on Sunday. Annan will provide stiff opposition for Queens as they displayed their quality with an emphatic three one win against SPL new boys St.Mirren. Goalscorers for Annan being Russell McGuffie, Marcus Thomson and Ally Sloan, St.Mirren's reply from the first team experienced Baltacha.
