MATCH SUMMARY

The men from Dumfries were handed their heaviest league defeat of the season today and indeed their heaviest league defeat since 1996. Alloa were the victors by a substantial six goals to one margin which saw them climb one place in the league to finish second overall. The match started quietly with neither team taking the initiative, Queens were having the bulk of the possession but only had two Sandy Hodge surge and shots to show for it whilst the Wasps had a good chance averted by a timely Andy Aitken tackle. Just as it looked as though end of season pleasantries would prevail, Alloa stepped up a gear.

In the thirty first minute and from a left wing cross manager's son Max Christie managed to get good direction on his unchallenged angular header to give David Mathieson no chance. The Wasps had stung and were eager for more. Central defender David Beaton then gave the Doonhamers a taster of what was to come when he curled an excellent effort just past the post. The next goal wasn't long in coming, the build up and cross again down Queens right and this time the homesters Little crashing in a drive that Smiler had little chanced with. Queens rallied and in a frantic thirty seconds firstly Mark Weir strode forward and struck a netbound shot which rebounded off the inside of the upright, it came back out across the goal where first Stevie Mallan then Charlie Adams failed to convert then Stevie Mallan again but Marv's effort also hitting the same post in the same post and bouncing away, after that frantic spell you could tell that it was not to be Queens day today. What made it worse was that Alloa immediately sprinted down the hill, were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box for a handball by Mark Weir and from the resultant free kick Beaton finished in style as he had threatened to do only minutes earlier as his kick sailed over the wall and into the top right hand corner of the net. The half finished with Queens pressing and the final action of the half was a Stevie Mallan diving header which was well saved. Queens made one change at half time with Denis Boyle, who had probably been the most effective Queens player of the half, being replaced by Ken Eadie, Eadie immediately took up his front row berth along with Stevie Mallan whilst Charlie Adams dropped back to the right side of midfield pushing John Dickson into a more central role. Within two minutes of the restart Alloa had made the scoreline 4-0, the retiring Andy Walker was put through by a ball over the defence, his first attempt was well saved by Smiler but the ball came back out to the veteran hitman and he made no mistake with his second attempt. Big Sandy Hodge then left the field with an injury to his upper right leg and was replaced at left back by John Gallagher. Queens were still making chances though and Charlie Adams should have done better with a free header which he managed to send over the bar from six yards out. Then Stevie Mallan could only deflect a cross over the bar as he dived in to attempt to take advantage of a well worked move between Adams and Stewart. Alloa though had the look of a team who would score on every attack, this time a little bit of help was needed in the form of a cruel deflection off of the knee of Kevin Robison, 5-0. The sixth and final Alloa goal going to Andy Walker when the ball was flighted into a large open space at right back position, Walker having the easiest of tasks to beat the keeper.

Chances kept on coming at the other end, in all Queens had eleven goal attempts, Eadie with a shot that was easily held by Cairns in goal, Stevie Mallan seeing his free kick being chested off the line and Eadies resultant effort being deflected away and then Stevie getting clean through on the keeper but only managing to lob both the keeper and the bar. Finally, in the eighty eighth minute the loyal travelling support were given something to cheer about. A Mark Weir corner from the left was cleared back to him, his second cross was then met sweetly by Ken Eadie who directed the ball past Cairns and into the net.
