MATCH SUMMARY

Queens will return from the long trip North with a satisfactory point against Ross County. However it so easily could have been all three points had the Palmerston front men taken half of the chances that they made in the first half hour of the game. As it turned out Ross County finished the better side and John Hillcoat again proved his shot stopping expertise with a fine last half hour to deny the "Staggies". In the opening half hour George Rowe and Stevie Mallan both came very close, Rowe with a glancing header and Mallan just shooting past. It didn't take too long however for Queens to take the lead. Queens won a free kick in the seventeenth minute in their own half which co-boss George Rowe took, Stevie Mallan flicked the ball to the feet of Denis Boyle whose initial effort was well saved by Nicky Walker in the County goal but the "Donegal Diamond" followed up expertly to slot the ball away. Within a minute Denis had another fine chance but failed to beat Walker this time as the ex-Ger made a fine stop. Queens continued to pressure and it was only in the last ten minutes of the half that Ross began to come into the game. Queens defence was holding firm, with youngster Sandy Hodge returning from a short trial at Inverness to claim the left back position from Alan Kerr, Aitken, Rowe and Stewart certainly were in no mood to repeat the errors of last weekend. In the thirty ninth minute, however, Marc Cleeland, back defending failed to properly clear the ball and as it bobbled out of the area Gary Wood hit a twenty yarder past the helpless Hillcoat. That's how it remained until half time. Queens came out the second half and began as they had the first with a number of chances being made, indeed in the fifty fifth minute it looked as though Captain Steven Leslie had scored from a deflected shot, however the referee adjudged a Queens player offside and the "goal" was chalked off. County then came more into the game and John Hillcoat demonstrated why the management team have signed him up for the season with a fine display to ensure that Queens returned with the precious point.
